Title: WITCHCRAFT CEREMONY BREWS CONTROVERSY

What's that? A real live witch was going to practice his craft at the library on Halloween? In front of children?

Yes, said Linda Puetz, president of the Friends of Sprague Public Library. And the witch, the Rev. Rapid Cabot Freeman, was going to charge admission and donate the proceeds to the library.

Freeman himself came to the trustees' meeting last Tuesday night to reassure them.

”We don't throw lightning bolts, we don't kill babies and we don't drink blood,” Freeman said. “It's not about that. It's about positive energy.”

Branwen (Norwich, Connecticut) - Email Me - Web

Rapid Freeman has never been convicted of any crime and has to date a spotless record
he has never been charged for rape or child molestation no matter how much his wife will claim otherwise
it is still innocent untill proven guilty right?
now as far as the library goes I have the paperwork in my hands from the meeting on October 14th he attended at the library on this matter all the proper things had been done the library does not have to charge it's self to use it's self and librarys do not charge people to hold lectures
the first selectwoman sent an e-mail out after the fact to the library board stating she did not care who got mad but she did not want witchcraft in her town due to towns people being worried about it and she had final say to anything to do with town buisness her e-mails are public record and can be verified ;)
anyways people have already come forward to both pay for the hall and rent it as a resident if need be
if anyone would like to help the Library they have a wishlist on both thier website (second link) and a link to an amazon wishlist feel free to make a donation

The issue here isn't about discrimation it's about a religous fraud and a violent criminal representing this particular community. Let's keep that in mind.

Libraries host books on any subject they can fit in, and it's only the past few millenia that we've enjoyed Ganesha's Gift of Literacy. If Mormons and Libertarians can rent that room, then so should Rabid Cabot Worshippers. It sounds, though, as though the librarian hadn't gotten his approval through channels; let's cross those eyes and dot those Tees.

As to his trouble with Alicia and Laurie, this is the first I've heard of it.

I wonder that he's taken hte name of Cabot Freeman, since I recall it was a great aunt, who married a Cabot.

would also apply to me.
While I might cheer this, ordinarily, I still believe in the separation of church and state.
I wouldn't want some proselytizer trying to accost me while I am doing some work or trying to check out a book, and conversely, I wouldn't want to proselytize either.
Now, if the library was hosting this as part of their own program, there would be little to say, and little reason to.

The little blurb under Freeman's photo states, "a self-described witch". I guess this was written by a self-described Christian?

And surely this could be considered "religious discrimination" because Pagans and Heathens, like white males, are the easiest to be attacked since we don't readily fit into many peoples' paradigms.

Alas, "you fear what you do not know (or understand) " is a phrase that's all too true when it comes to modern neo-paganism.

Change the title to "Baptist Ceremony Brews Controversy." Now, put in its place a Baptist minister wanting to hold a big Jesusy revival at this library... I'd be hearing screams from Wiccans, Atheists, and anyone else who thinks that allowing church and state to be mingled is bad.

In fact, take a look at this:

[Web LINK]

...where a Christian Group was in question about using a library's facilities for their worship.

Double standards are what is bad.

Apparently there is more to this whole shebang than meets the eye...

Quoting from message board from the first article:

"I'm Not Surprised Oct 21st. at 5:50:36 pm EDT

Rev. Alicia Lyon Folberth (Derby, Connecticut) - Email Me - Web

This is my ex husband, who is also my rapist - and I did report the rape and still hold a restraining order against him - same as his 1st wife. He created this drama just to get attention being the narcissist abuser that he is. No one is allowed to tell him no in his world so he is "punishing" the town - just like he did with me.

His legal name is Rusty Lee Freeman - do a google. There is a warrant out for his arrest in Norwich for stalking another woman.

Kudos to the First Selectman for standing her ground!"

The Channel 8 News reporter was very nice - he called me from outside the Norwich police station and let me know my ex had been arrested. Check the Norwich Bulletin newspaper tomorrow, there may be an article, and there is also the police blotter.

As far as I am concerned, he is a disgrace to Witchcraft and everything we stand for. He didn't make his appointment with Channel 8 News for an on camera interview, due to the fact he had been arrested for stalking someone who has become a very dear friend of mine.

I truly, do thank the media for listening to the other side of the story, and for helping to do something about this situation. The warrant for his arrest had been out for weeks.

According to Channel 8 News, it turns out that he is no longer a resident of Sprague, and therefore, he cannot rent the library anyway. Only residents can rent it.

He was stripped of his 'honorary' third degree by Laurie Cabot herself months ago.

As for his title of Reverend, he gave it to himself. He didn't even send in a box top for it..."

I am simply at a loss for words... though I suppose that answers the question about this being a case of possible Pagan persecution. If what is being claimed is true (and not to call into question someone else's experiences but due process and all that) then he does not sound like the kind of person I (nor anyone else?) would want being a public face of Pagandom...

P.S....and sorry if I violated the TOS.

I agree that no one should practice religion on certain government run properties. However, how many of us have attended rituals held in parks? I see no problem with celebrating Samhain at a library as long as proper protocol for obtaining a permit was followed.

This is one of those cased which is difficult to call, on one hand it is not unreasonable to ask that someone follow the proper procedure, on the other there appears to be some hostility (especially on the board's part) towards the guy. I really do hate trumped up cries of descrimination, because it dillutes actual cases, but again this is a hard one to call.

I'll admit that the goals of they guy seem laudable enough, a public ritual with procedes going to the libray. Especially if other religious groups have been using rooms for various purposes, I don't really see it as a case of seperation of church and state, so much as renting a publically owned space for personal uses, much like renting a space at a public park for something like PPD.

... their religion.

I mean, it's bad enough that people who don't understand SEPERATING CHURCH AND STATE want to use the PUBLIC library to celebrate Christian holidays, like Easter and Christmas...

..but now Wiccans are acting just as bad! I thought better of Wiccans - that many of us at least understood that in the USA, we do not push our religion into the faces of others by insisting on practicing it on government property.

If we want to expect the courtesy of others to seperate church and state, we need to start with ourselves.
