Wiccan Widow Takes Struggle To D.C.

Author: Geralda Miller Source: Reno Gazette-Journal (NV)

Title: WICCAN WIDOW TAKES STRUGGLE TO D.C.
While families celebrate the nation's independence with barbecues and fireworks, a Nevada soldier's widow continues her fight for a veteran's memorial plaque that recognizes her husband's Wiccan religion.
Roberta Stewart of Fernley will be the Fourth of July guest speaker at an interfaith religious rights rally a couple of blocks from the White House in Washington, D.C.
Stewart's husband, Nevada Army National Guard Sgt. Patrick Stewart, died Sept. 25 when the Chinook helicopter he was in was shot down in Afghanistan.

Weasel must be bored...
Roberta Stewart is doing so much. It's great to see so many pagans helping her and supporting the fight against the VA to get the pentacle approved. As for the others... thanks for nothing. Roberta hardly has time to be bored with all of the daily stuff at home that she has to do while setting up events and speaking with lawyers. Bored? I don't hink so. Courageous? Yes. Bold? Yes. Bored? Hell no!!! At least she is actually doing something to stop discrimination against Pagans. Her fight isn't just for her and her late husband, Patrick. This fight is for all Pagans!!! Keep up the good fight, Roberta!!! Blessed Be!

If it was MY husband that died, I'd be fighting for the same rights as Mrs. Stewart is. Goddess bless her. I'll get to meet her tomorrow.
Bored? I doubt it. Grieving, definitely.

to honour her dead husband in a way that is appropriate to his career and his spiritual views. To me, there could be no greater honour than to fight for equal treatment.
He fought for the U.S. He died for the U.S. He should be treated like every other fallen soldier ... This includes the right to have his spiritual/religious views identified on his honourarium.
I highly doubt, as a new widow, that she has tons of extra time on her hands ... she is just trying to honour the wonderful person that her husband was with something that represents him.
You can be darned sure that when George W. kicks the bucket, he'll have a huge honkin cross on his grave ... he gets to have that even though he never fought for his country ... he gets to have that because of people like this soldier fighting for everyone else's rights. Now, I'm not a supporter of this war, but I strongly believe that he died for his country and should be honoured appropriately.

My heart goes out to Mrs. Stewart, in her attempt to draw attention from military and legislative administrators, through her public actions. I hope she succeeds in putting an end to this unjust discrimination toward Wiccan and Pagan, servicemen who've died while serving their country.
