Rangel Wants Draft Reinstated

Author: John Heilprin, AP Source: ABC News (US)

Title: HOUSE DEMOCRAT WANTS DRAFT REINSTATED
Americans would have to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18 under a bill the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee says he will introduce next year.
Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., said Sunday he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars.
"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said.
Rangel, a veteran of the Korean War who has unsuccessfully sponsored legislation on conscription in the past, has said the all-volunteer military disproportionately puts the burden of war on minorities and lower-income families.
Rangel said he will propose a measure early next year. While he said he is serious about the proposal, there is little evident support among the public or lawmakers for it.

Those with money and power will still ensure that their children will not be put in harms way. This is a historically supported fact. The only thing that this measure would do is force those who are ideologically opposed to the course our government is taking to support it.

First off, let me point out that I just recently got out of the AF after 11 years. Why get out after 11? I developed asthma and I can't go into combat and call time out when I get an attach. Doesn't work that way.
I joined the AF at 17, and yes, I had to get Daddy's permission. The amount of growing up I did in the first couple of years, the responsibility I learned... I can't believe some of the attitudes that are put up with in the civilian work place some times. It makes me want to take the youngling out back and have a few words with them, not blows but words, that wouldn't be considered 'ok' in the civilian world.
I can honestly say that I wish everyone had to serve 4 years in the military of their choice so that they can get some of the childish crap out of their systems and become productive members of society that don't turn around and play the 'woe is me' game because they are actually asked to do their job.
My first troop was killed in Iraq in April, he'd gone from AF to Marines, and may the Gods smile on him and keep our troops over there.
Gods keep Cpl Brandon M. Hardy. We miss you badly Cowboy! See you on the next rodeo.

The media isn't telling why he called for the draft. If there was a draft that took everyone then no one could hide in the reserves or with a college. This would mean that everyones sons would be going.... including those who have been supporting this war but not fighting it. Now that they would have a stake in it, you would see this was come to a screaching hault in 45 hours from draft induction.
His call for the draft was more a political statement directed towards the chickenhawks of the government than as a serious call for a draft.
But you'll never hear about that on Fox.

For real. I am against war...and I wont fight. If they made me sign up for it, being a flamingly gay male i would show up as fabulous as possible and flirt with as many of the recruiter ppl as possible. and if the came to get me for the draft i wouldnt leave my house until i was equally as fabulous. they say dont ask dont tell...i say shout it from the roof tops...lol.

the draft floated back in the lae '60's & '70's but I doubt it would go over now. Shrubya's polls are at the lowest they've been and they would probably go to Davey' jones locker if the draft was brought back. It will never work....
Peace be....

My dad might have been able to help me avoid the draft, but he wouldn't. He got drafted in World War II, and until he saw what it had become, he thought of military service in terms of his time in the "Class of '46".
My way of avoiding the draft was to join the ROTC. The logic seemed simple enough: if you're already in, they'll leave you alone. And once I did go on active duty, I had serious intentions of a full career. But what caused that to change is another story.
When I came on duty as a second lieutenant in the Air Force, I noticed a number of draftees and virtual draftees. Not that the Air Force too draftees, but there were those who amounted to draftees. There were those who joined thinking that it was better than being drafted into the infantry. Then, of course, there were the doctors and the lawyers who were there only to repay their draft deferment. Talk about attitudes!
When the draft ended, the quality of people coming in improved until Jimmy Carter was elected. Then came some years of irony. We were getting lots of people coming in who enlisted to escape the bad job market, but the more senior people were leaving because they could not afford to stay in! That was the other time people spoke of reviving the draft.
My dad told me that during World War II, the draft was repeatedly cancelled because there were so many volunteers.
But there is one thing missing to make the picture right. There needs to be wisdom at the top!

Is still slavery. On the surface this would seem to mean that all classes would be included in military service, however Vietnam made it obvious that the rich will still avoid combat by bribes and back room deals. In the end it will mean that MORE low income people will be killed, not less. Of course that is what the majority of the rich elite want.

A Democrat wants the Draft. Republicans don't. Ironic eh?
I understand the point he is trying to make, and he is going about it poorly (imo) .
Still take a look at who represents you and always keep a eye on them.
The government is for the people, not to control the people.

If any nation attacked us there would be no need for a draft. And while selective service exists, it's better to have those who volunteer than someone who gets shoved into it. Besides, other countries, seeing a draft, might conclude one of two things. We are weak, if we must draft them-- or we are going to attack someone else. Of course, we know why they're thinking about it. The Desert Quagmire.

I doubt anyone sees the larger ramifications of a draft. If there were a draft, there would be more public outcry against Dumbya and his stringpullers as well as this illegal invasion he started in 2003.

...but it's poorly made.
The reason our armed forces, flawed as they are, are still one of the greatest forces on the planet is because it is all-volunteer. Yes, it is the poorer among us who tend to volunteer, but there are those in the upper classes who feel a prick of conscience that cannot be ignored (Pat Tillman and his brother come to mind) and I wish more of our pampered brethren had their hearts. But do you really want men (and women, damn it) in uniform who don't want to be in uniform? Do you want to hand an assault rifle to someone who has no drive to use it responsibly?
The draft is a few dirty megatons.

Men just need to all jump out of the closet (whether gay or not) . Remember don't ask, don't tell? That's a hell of an easy way to get out. And though the idea may sound far-fetched, the easiest way for women to get out of a possible draft is always a pregnancy.
This man is naive, not evil. He wants to force Republicans to end the war with the threat of a draft. It's roundabout, but it COULD work. Keyword is "could". I just love how right-wing, anti-free thought Republicans are jumping on this to show how "evil" the new Democrats are. Right, that wasn't expected.

It is quite predictable what would happen if they brought back the draft. The rich would avoid it and everybody else would suffer from it. It is a form of involuntary servitude, aka slavery.
Then there's the joke about Dubya: Q: "Why did the chicken cross the road?" A: "So his rich daddy could get him into the Texas Air National Guard."

"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said.
The Draft didn't keep us out of Viet Nam, even when Korea was no longer Chiq.
I've heard that Ancient Greece had a rule that any legislative violation of their Constitution could result in the relevant legislator being sued. It would be a good idea here.
The 13th Amendment prohibits Involuntary Servitude anywheres in these united States, save in cases tried by Jury. A Jury might, therefore, remand an unwed father of inadequate means to Military Servitude, but the Military would have to admit such Convicts.
"Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican who is a colonel in the U.S. Air Force Standby Reserve, said he agreed that the U.S. does not have enough people in the military. "
