Climate In The Court

Author: Washington Post Source: Washington Post

Title: CLIMATE IN THE COURT
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in what could prove to be one of the most fateful environmental cases in a generation -- or not, depending on what the justices do with it. Massachusetts v. Environmental Protection Agency is a challenge by states and environmental groups to the Bush administration's refusal to regulate greenhouse gases as pollution.
The question of how to handle global warming is the chief environmental issue of our era. Yet the Environmental Protection Agency has refused to assume regulatory authority over greenhouse emissions. It claims that the Clean Air Act gives it no power to do so.

Morning Light (Fairplay, Colorado) - Email Me

In the past, we Americans usually complained about government agencies doing to much or going beyond their mandate. This case of course is quite different. Scientist and researchers rarely, if ever, have a definitive view of what nature is doing. A scientist must always give the benefit of doubt to even the most robust theory (model) of nature. The fact that a scientist has to acknowledge that their view may not be an absolute fact, has been used by politicians to cast doubt upon the science that we have concerning global warming.
If the politician doesn't want to believe the science, or has reasons of economic gain to poo-poo the science, why should humanity act upon what a few scientists, even if it is the majority them, think are cause and effect. We may NOT be the ultimate or penultimate cause of global warming. But that is not what the science shows.
We may not be able to change the course of the climatic shift to which we and our heirs will be subject. But we should try. Even if we fail, we can reduce the amount of failure. If we succeed, then we and the life on this planet will live better, breathe clean air and live in this worlds bounty. If we fail, well, this planet will change, and the life on it will too. This not a bad outcome, but it is not the one that I, as a human being, would wish for.
