A Good Word For Harry Potter (Opinion)

Author: Rev. Barbara H. Gadon Source: The News Journal (DE)

Title: A GOOD WORD FOR HARRY POTTER
As a minister, I rejoice at the release of a new Harry Potter tale. In fact, at my church we are taking advantage of the July 16 publication date to celebrate the moral values promoted by the books.
I am always astonished when religious leaders criticize these books. I find them chock-full of things for a minister to love. Consider, a small troupe of young people discover their gifts in life, and learn that you may use your gifts to either bless or curse the world. (It's a basic religious choice.) Without moralizing, the characters make ethical decisions that are excellent examples for readers of any age.

There are ministers who actually READ a book before commenting on it.
Good to see positive words about so positive a book series.

at last, a- real- good word for a wonderful series that has been much maligned because of its content. no real religion is ever quoted in the series, as the gifts and abilities of each student are not religious, but natural, and much in the books mirrors the human world, both good and ill, and Harry finds himself contending with both. it is just a story, meant for an afternoon when the rain is pouring down. or for a time when you can lose yourself in its pages- all in good fun. yes, there are morals, every good story has them, but it never blows them out of context, nor do they impede the action. in fact, the actions explain them. I can't wait to find out the rest of the story and like countless others, will be very sad when it finally comes to an end.

I miss the UU church I was in, they are wonderful. Open-minded, they don't care if you are Pagan, you can help teach your own beliefs, so that the people learn it from the source, the people are friendly and very accepting of all that go in. And with religious difference of me and my husband it works wonderfully for our kids.

to see someone who sees things through clear eyes, unclouded by religious dogma and prejudice. Such common sense and clear reasoning is always welcome. A nice departure from 'other' Christian ministers who choose to dwell in darkness and temper everythng not 'approved' by their own self-riteous views as evil. Of course it always helps to actually read something and see it objectively before deciding to condemn it, something most tali-Christians fail to do. A minister who sees the positive side to a story for once.... who sees the love, friendship and humanity and how these things work to overcome the darker aspects of life... finally, a real teacher who actually listened to what Jesus taught.... how rare to be in the news.

This article pointed out the power of naming evil. I hereby do so: George W. Bush!
I couldn't resist the temptation!
I myself am looking forward to the new Harry Potter book. I suspect I'll be up until the wee hours reading it.

The Harry Potter books are loaded with fantastic values; love, cooperation, friendship, the importance of family, repsect for our elders. It's good to see that not all christians have a condemning attitude toward them.
I preordered mine months ago from Amazon - I'm practically salivating waiting for it to get here!! :o)

Finally, a minister sees the bigger picture.
After all, the religious right would be forcing the Harry Potter books upon us, if you kept the storylines exactly the same, but instead had Harry and friends as trainee monks/nuns who were 'touched by God' and able to perform miracles!
If you think about it, it's not that different is it? The only things people appear to object to are the words "witch" and "wizard". They're just words. Well done to that writer for judging the characters by their actions, not their appearances.
