Title: DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC?
Helen Haughey doesn't usually don a tall, pointed black hat or sling a black cloak around her shoulders. But she'll put on both when she wants to have a little fun.
"Real witches never wear this stuff, just so you know," says Haughey, co-owner of Bell, Book and Candle in Dover. "We just do it when we want to look witchy."
Haughey, 36, practices the earth-based Wiccan religion. Haughey, who is a third-degree Wiccan priestess ordained by the Wiccan Church of Magick in the Dragon Tradition, got interested in the religion shortly after her daughter, who's now 13, was born. She is the first in her family to convert to Wicca; her father is a Methodist minister.
About five years ago, Haughey met store co-owner Diana Welch at a dinner party celebrating the Samhain holiday -- "that's what you call Halloween," Haughey says -- and the two began to chat about possibly opening a store that would sell Wiccan items and herbs.
