Interfaith Donation: A Kidney From A Minister To A Rabbi

Author: Geoff Mulvihill, Associated Press Source: News-journal (DE)

Title: INTERFAITH DONATION: A KIDNEY FROM A MINISTER TO A RABBI
Reform Rabbi Andrew Bossov and Methodist Rev. Karen Onesti have known each other for four years. They’ve talk about leading a congregation and, sometimes, their views of the Old Testament. Now, they have something else to share: She’s donating one of her kidneys to him.
Onesti had missed the previous meeting of the Greater Mount Laurel Interfaith Association, so she felt like the last preacher in town to know that Bossov’s kidneys were failing. He told her about a year ago that he was on a list to receive a donated kidney.
But when Onesti, the pastor at Masonville-Rancocas United Methodist Church, heard about his situation, she was decisive.
“She said, ’You know what? I think I’ll give you one of mine,”’ recalled Bossov, the rabbi at Adath Emanu-El.
The transplant is scheduled for Tuesday at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

that no matter the faith of the donor and the recipient, it was a VERY kind thing to do. (maybe we all could learn something from this....?)
Love to all

I'll take a kidney from a fundie if I needed one and as a reformed Rabbi, I'm sure he goes to Chinese Restaurants and eats Scrimp with Lobster Sause over Schrimp Fried Rice. Great dish and don't spair the mustard.

I'm waiting for my second kidney transplant. My kidney (the transplanted one) is only functioning at about 30% normal, and my originals have long atrophied and gone the way of the dodo. It saddens me that so few want to give the gift of life to another in need, but this story brightens my day.
Having been on both sides of the medical system, I can tell you the two most common reasons people don't want to donate. Number one is that they're afraid if they sign their card and a hospital knows, the hospital will let them die to obtain thier organs; and 2, they want to go to God whole. I can't tell you how many patients I've heard and discussed this with.
Donating a kidney these days is a relatively simple procedure for the patient. It's done with laproscopic surgery and uses only two or three 1 inch incisions. The patient is in the hospital for about a week afterward and remains on light duties at work for about a month.
They have found that a living donor kidney works better and longer than a deceased donor kidney because there is no "cold time"; the time when the organ is harvested and put on ice and chemicals to keep it viable for transplant.

This article is just beautiful. It really makes you hope that, possibly, not all religious people in the world are complete hypocrites. This woman has saved her friend's life, something she has no obligation to do, while many family members would even shy away from such n operation. Congrats to her and prayers to the both of them.
