Title: MUSLIM TEEN WHO CONVERTED TO CHRISTIANITY SAYS FAMILY THREATENED TO KILL HER
An Ohio teenager says she ran away from home to Florida because her family threatened to kill her for converting from Islam to Christianity, local media reported.
Rifqa Bary, 17, testified Monday at a custody hearing in Orlando that she'd recently changed religions and is worried her relatives will do something drastic, according to WFTV in Orlando and Central Florida News 13.

Silver Faery (Hays, Kansas) - Email Me

I remember finally discovering Paganism at around the time I was 19, I didn't live with my parents...it was still after I turned 21 that they found out. And I too have gone through the threats of being disowned and all that. For some reason this is not suprising. This girl would be better off in a foster home until she is of age. Then she can stay away from her family if needed. It wouldn't suprise me that the parents did threaten her when she converted, Muslims don't take things like that very lightly....

I'd rather identity come from demonstrable personal, familial, civil/community excellence and demonstrable sense of purpose...to a depth that it's spiritual and functional virtues, ethics, and commitments or ties are not trampled underneath.
Ultimately, killing or threatening to kill over conversion to another religion is a failure of imagination. [Web LINK]
...And yet we don't know this girls entire story...abuse can often be hard to prove since most of it happens behind closed doors.
I would suspect the court will protect her from her family, in part because of the alleged threats and in part because of some media darling effect (due to her converting to Christianity as opposed to any other religion) .

And they say that "they" have tolerance....
That is not uncommon, since apostasy is considered a capital crime in some places. These are the same places that reduce those that aren't muslim to second class citizenship that is both taxed and segregated.
Still, I wonder how many Pagan kids are forced to make choices once their own parents find out about their new religious leanings. To such people, muslim or christian, choosing differently from the family is often seen as a traitorous act. Which is why those who dare to convert often keep their secrets as long as possible so long as they perceive the hostility of their folks.
My condolences to her, since she might not be allowed to come back to the fold even if she repents and reaffirms a muslim state. Even if they don't hurt her, which is unlikely, she will still be held suspect and will never be trusted again, a fact which they will never cease to remind her at every opportunity. Which can, in the long run hurt far worse than if they just shoved her away and told her to get adopted by someone else.
