V Is For Voracious: Vampire Culture Unveiled

Author: Alexandra Zayas   Source: Tampa Bay Online

Title: V IS FOR VORACIOUS: VAMPIRE CULTURE UNVEILED

The vampires wait outside the back door of the Ybor City nightclub. Newcomers stand on the fringes, alone. The regulars talk about school, about work, about the weather.

But not about blood-drinking. Not out here.

Up walks a man in a cashmere trench coat. Evan Christopher, 39, is the group's founder. They gravitate toward him.

Anyone who wants to get into a Vampire Gathering needs to see the gargoyles first. They're the protectors, the first line of defense against heckling street preachers and tourists.

The monthly Gathering at the Castle nightclub isn't a role-playing game or a convention of Twilight fans. These people don't sleep in coffins, fear garlic or live forever.

But they do feel a need to feed on others, whether that means absorbing energy or blood.

Does This Really Have A Place Here? Really? Aug 18th. at 9:15:28 pm EDT

I don't think I could do a big enough eye roll to convey my amusement at these "vampires". Considering their guidelines and very "symptoms" are blatantly influenced by fiction I don't see why they are taken so seriously.
Also, energy vampirism can be cleared up right away by not over exerting yourself psychically. You don't have to take in energy if you're not constantly draining your reserves.
Dressing goth and being a vampire seems to go hand in hand, which furthers my skepticism. You can believe what ever you want, but to expect people to take you seriously based on your word that you're a special snow flake is just ignorant.

Cue the "vampires are real" fluff bunnies in 3...2...1...

No Reason To Fear Aug 16th. at 8:30:58 pm EDT

There is the world of magical thinking, and then there is the real world in which people with attitudes (like supposed vampires) will find themselves challenged on the street for acting like a dip. An act of dominance requires a willing submissive. If you are weak and submissive there's a lot more to worry about than goths with a vampire fetish hanging out at the club. It's very obvious: there's the power that people claim to have, and what they really have. Between is a world of difference. As usual, the only real problem is a journalist trying to lend credence to something where none is due. Having said that, these might still be fun and interesting people to party with, as opposed to your average football fan or something.

Why wouldn't you be able to generate your own or get it from the universe? You're not dead. I realize that's not nearly as Hollywood, but there are other ways to get energy than taking it from unconsenting people.

Consenting adults would be no problem, but this article is describing many occasions when that is clearly not the case. I'm appalled that no one is really speaking out against that part unless it is their own folks being drained. How irresponsible. A written code of ethics is no good if no one abides by it.

Status Quo Aug 16th. at 2:25:48 am EDT

Actually, it seems that the modern vampire is not too far removed from the average piece of 'fluff', to the extent that all sane persons remove themselves from obvious points of danger and seek like minds, as we pass time as well as we damn well can on this lonely planet. No, these people are hardly scary and seem rather sensible. They could just as easily peacefully assemble at the local Barnes & Nobles over coffee, but of course ambience is everything. We're really talking about a goth subculture. I think it's generally agreed that black underwear is the next best thing to no underwear, no? I mean really, what is the end game. Smart and sexy people have only so much patience for mind games. But modern vampires do seem to have achieved a quiet cool (despite the mishap that is Anne Rice) , and that's grand. I'm glad they are immune to the obvious dangers of HIV and Hepatitis, and have chosen more symbolic, sympathetic methods.

Very good article with factual information. I even like how they mentioned "sin nomine" in it. I should show this article to some people at the Court of Lazarus tomorrow night.

Cue the "vampires are bad/fake" fluffbunnies in 3...2...1...
