'Devil' Shirts Send Kids Home

Author: Christopher Curry   Source: Gainesville Sun (FL)

Title: 'DEVIL' SHIRTS SEND KIDS HOME

More children from the Dove World Outreach Center arrived Tuesday at area public schools with shirts bearing the message "Islam is of the Devil" and were sent home for violation of the school district's dress code when they declined to change clothes or cover the anti-Muslim statement on their clothing.

School district staff attorney Tom Wittmer said the shirts violated a district ban on clothing that may "disrupt the learning process" or cause other students to be "offended or distracted."

"Students have a right of free speech, and we have allowed students to come to school wearing clothes with messages," Wittmer said. "But this message is a divisive message that is likely to offend students. Principals, I feel reasonably, have deemed that a violation of the dress code."

The First ammendment protects this kind of speech.
I don't Believe that any type of speech should be regulated and hate speech is a poor excuse for censership.

I was shocked when I saw this. I told her if she's ever confronted with this, to warmly welcome the student into the 21st century and to remind them of -1 John 4:20, and about hate and love.
or point and laugh.

Silver Faery (Hays, Kansas) - Email Me

I personally don't care for school uniforms in public schools. The reason being, that is a way of kids to express themselves. But yes even then there are normally rules and regulations the student and staff have to follow. You break a rule, you should be sent home and made to change your outfit or fix the problem. But I do realize that more and more public schools, especially in cities are going to uniforms. Problem is, can everyone afford to get those uniforms for their kids, or anymore can schools afford to help the ones that would need to get those uniforms! More and more public schools have higher enrollment fees, and having kids (especially in elementry schools) brings supplies that at one time the teachers use to provide! Just as my sister how much it costs to send a child to school anymore.

Uniforms are not always the best thing. People expect to say what they want without thinking, dress how they want without concern to others around them.... and being told you can't do that doesn't go over so well anymore!

School No Different From A Working Place... Aug 28th. at 1:43:26 pm EDT

I do believe in free speech, but it also carries a responsibility that few seem to want to assume. Wearing such a shirt may be fine if there are no muslims in the school, but it is offensive to them. No doubt a child would be equally attacked if he came to school in a tee-shirt bearing that same sentiment toward christianity.
Many workplaces do outlaw certain garb, sometimes for practical reasons, sometimes because it is offensive, why should school be any different?
Some things are just plain offensive and should remain at home.

Uniforms Are Conformity. Aug 28th. at 10:32:19 am EDT

Naya (Memphis, Tennessee) - Email Me - Web

Screw uniforms. It's a terrible idea. It impresses conformity upon children from day one. Just because some people need to learn how to express themselves without inciting trouble doesn't mean that we need to impose conformity on everyone else. I, for one, worked at a high school that did not have uniforms, and had a large number of students who were very artistic. You should have seen some of the wonderful and creative ways they expressed themselves. I saw kids wearing fabulous hand-made outfits, tie-dyes, vintage shop goodies, all of it... and they were happy and proud to be able to express who they are. Uniforms crush that out of students... and prepares them mentally to strive for the most menial of jobs where they'll be wearing uniforms forever, and strive no higher. Forget that - I would rather inspire creativity and greatness and healthy, positive self-expression in students.

Moonlight Wolf (Bradford, England) - Email Me

There is a difference between saying "I believe in x because..." and "X is evil because that's not what I believe in."

The first expresses one's beliefs, the second imposes that belief on others.

These kids don't really get the implications these shirts and that such shirts do their faith more harm than good. If these kids went round with these shirts on all the time, people around them who knew little of Christianity would think that all Christians were Islamophobes. Funny way of showing people 'Jesus's love.'

The sad thing is that these kids picked this hate up from their parents who in turn picked it up from their pastor.

This is why Christians really need to learn the difference between expression and imposing. Stuff like this is why Christianity is going down the pan.

Bigotry Has Better PR These Days. Aug 27th. at 8:25:40 pm EDT

Michael Thornton (Mesa, Arizona) - Email Me

"Emily Sapp said the "Islam is of the Devil" statement was aimed at the religion's beliefs, not its members.

Yeaaaaah. So, it's like saying non-white people are of the devil. It's aimed at their skin color, not the people who happen to have that particular skin color...

"He (Wayne Sapp) added that his children decided it was time to 'stand up for what they believe instead of saying the rules might not let me do it' and said that society has grown 'so tolerant of being tolerant' that free speech is eroding."

That's right, stand up for bigotry! These uppity minorities have been stifling our free speech for too long with minor concerns like the feelings of others. Damn the conventions and social rules! Yell "Theater!" in a crowded fire and see what happens. We don't need no higher larnin', we jus' needs to gets us rid of sum Izlomiks!

Sorry, I slipped into a bit of lolcat-speak there.

This is, of course, a transparent ploy on the part of the church to polarize the community and drive up attendance.

I Will Usually Stand Up For Free Speach Aug 27th. at 5:45:07 pm EDT

Shadowbear (Hillsboro, Oregon) - Email Me

However, that being said, in this case I am voting for the school uniform. A plain, cheap, t shirt and jeans should do just fine.

Allowing children to have signs on them with "hate speech" is not conducive to the general learning environment. If I had a child subjected to this type of statement in their schoolmate's clothing I would very likely be tempted to retaliate by buying a special t shirt for my child to wear. Thus the religious war is born.

Nope, it is better to restrict this type of apparel in the school - uniforms are easy and have no speech at all.

Outside of school, if you want your child to learn to fight at a young age, put whatever you feel like on his/her clothing.

Uniforms Aug 27th. at 1:49:44 pm EDT

Finn (San Marcos, Texas) - Email Me

I'm personally of the opinion that inexpensive, drab school uniforms are the best option. Children are far too distracted by the problems of peer pressure and looking "right" when they should have a focus on the academics. If uniforms are required and no jewelry is allowed, the issue is moot. Let them wear whatever they want after school and on the weekends.

Ahr-Ohn (Bridgeport, Connecticut) - Email Me

"Saeed R. Khan, president of the Muslim Association of North Central Florida, said the anti-Islam message should not be accepted when "schools are supposed to be teaching tolerance for others."

I have to disagree, with Saeed, that schools should be teaching children what to believe, but there's also a matter of lawful standards, which do not include Incitement to Riot.

I would say, that the parents of Hitler Youth had been promised a thousand years of Peace, and I hear an echo of that promise in the name of Dove.

I don't think FLDS and Scientology really belong in the same handbasket as some of these fundamentalists. As a matter of fact, many Devils have favored Scientology, and Islam, Zoroastrianism, and even Pre-Nicaean Christianity.

What is the problem? Just look at it as though it is a workplace environment since kids have to be at school. Would you allow your employees to wear something that provocative? Insert whatever religion you want. What is permissable in public can be harrassment at work or school.
Now if they had tried to say a student could not wear such shirts OUT of school it would be totally over the line and wrong.
When I see stories like this I thik of one of NIven's Laws: "There is not cause so noble that it does not attract fudge-heads"
This applies equally to the "christians" who made the shirts as to the "Pagans" who object simply because it is done by Christians.

Provoke another school killing. Identify the parents and their churches and let them talk with Muslim representatives. A meet and greet. CNN should cover it.
