USF Prof: Headless Goats Found Saturday May Not Be Sign Of Ritual

Author: Natalie Shepherd, News Channel 8 Source: Tampa Bay Online

Title: USF PROF: HEADLESS GOATS FOUND SATURDAY MAY NOT BE SIGN OF RITUAL
The chairwoman of the University of South Florida's religious studies department says the recent discovery of headless animals may sound like the result of religious rituals, but appearances can be deceiving.
Volunteers cleaning up the shore along the Courtney Campbell Causeway Saturday discovered a decapitated goat, two decapitated chickens, a machete, and what is described as a voodoo pole.
The discovery sounds like rituals used in Afro-Caribbean religions, such as Santeria, said Dr. Mozella Mitchell, religious studies chairwoman. But she said traditional practice would not include discarding the animal's bodies.

Still, I definitely would like to know who, and why. Also, if I ever witnessed something like that unfolding in a public place, I would definitely call the police, the local paper, and a regional news station. It may very well not be illegal, but it is in extremely poor taste. I hate the idea of such things happening in private. But to do it in public, where kids and walkers and the like just stumble across it? That is pretty ***ed up. And yet, I honestly want to know their reasons. What does it do for them? What sort of power does it conjure, and then what do they do with that?

I don't care who did it or why. It's disgusting.

By my lights, being vegan and making those multiple ethical and nutritional choices is an extension of a longstanding aversion to cruelty against animals. In short, I no longer see any difference between cutting an animal in solemn ritual and then for food, as opposed to just cutting its throat for wild kicks or a power trip or just for food. Now I really don't say that to be inflammatory--I just want others to see what I see, as opposed to how they may see this, and then we can all trot off and make whatever choices we want, for better or worse, right? Free will. I'd just like to establish a little honesty and groundwork before I ask this:
Is anyone sure this isn't a fringe Voodoo/Santeria ritual? One they are not too keen to discuss? I simply don't know enough to ascertain that. I have heard of some rather unsavory Jamaican practices. Outside of some documentary footage of rather 'proper' Haitian and New Orleans rituals, on cable, I have no experience or knowledge of animal sacrifice under, let's say, LESS holy terms. Not everybody toes the line in the name of tradition, you know. Consider Hoodoo, or even your average eclectic witch. I think any observer of humans can see that calling yourself something, a Christian for instance, in no way guarantees you actually read the bible or act anything at all like Jesus may have intended.
This is what I'm getting at. I see many theoretically credible people are saying, 'no, this is not traditional . . . we treat our animal victims very well, etc. . .', and who knows? Maybe that's more or less true. But that pole looks pretty well-crafted and authentic to me. So I would like to hear more honest commentary about this, something more about animal sacrifice in general. I personally don't do it and never would, no matter what kind of power it could draw, but now I'm very curious regarding what these people are up to.
Does anyone here practice it? How does it work for you? I have no doubt it must be pretty potent magic. But what about THIS particular incident--does anyone think this was 'legitimate' magic (k) ? Because it sure as hell doesn't sound like just teenagers or landscape gardeners acting out after a case of Schlitz or something.
Some daylight and honesty on this issue, please. What does anyone here know about 'mercenary' animal sacrfices, for magical power?

Dr. Mozella Mitchell, professor and chairwoman of the University of South Florida's religious studies department, made an excellent assessment that was then met with a number of immature substandard comments (hopefully not representative of our American educational system) regarding what was probably an act indicative of immature substandard mockery of ritual and religious community.

It's good to hear people in the news actually indicating that this isn't what practitioners of Vodun and Santeria generally do. If only more journalists these days bothered to do their research.
Now, if you want to *lose* your faith in humanity, check out the comments on the original site. Apparently, most of the people who comment on the Tampa Bay Online are under the age of 15. That, or something is very, very wrong with the Tampa Bay school system.
