Court Sets Date For Harry Potter Appeal

Author: Laura Diamond   Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Title: COURT SETS DATE FOR HARRY POTTER APPEAL

Harry Potter soon will have his day in court.

Gwinnett Superior Court will hold a hearing May 29 in an appeal brought by a Loganville mother who claims the Harry Potter books promote witchcraft and should be removed from Gwinnett school libraries, according to a news release from Gwinnett County public schools.

If Harry Gets Banned Apr 11th. at 11:14:35 pm EDT

then I want them to take books off the shelves that have really damaged people, often enough to make them insensitive to the horrors of torturing, raping, and murdering others. We all know them: The Bible and Koran. These books, just as fictional as the Potter series, but unfortunately taken as the literal word of the Creator of the universe (who apparantly has nothing better to do than to tell people not to eat pork and to not work on either Saturday or Sunday, depending on your sect) . In these "Holy" books, all sorts of murder, incest, rape, genocide, etc. are not only tolerated by our "loving God" but in many cases demanded by Him. When we look at the Potter books, we see that they teach true values: for children to stand up for themselves, to find their own truth, to stand with their friends, etc. Truly harmful stuff, non? In truth, I want no censorship when it comes to books that I read and that my children read. As a parent, I visit the library and bookstore with my children and if something were truly against my values (such as Marquis de Sade or Penthouse) then I would not allow them to purchase it. Simple as that. Why can't other parents do the same?

If they bann Harry Potter books they will have to bann alot of other books too. I remeber checking out most of the fictional books i read from school. Most of them had some form of witchcraft or another in them. Example the Dragons of Pern books, any Dragonlance books and etc........

YES!!!! LET HER Appeal This! Apr 11th. at 6:47:43 pm EDT

Batman (Madison, Wisconsin) - Email Me

My fellow pagans, for those of us who actually entertain the idea that she could have any ground to stand on in this case - let me put your minds at ease. She doesn't. In fact, you could say she doesn't even have a PRAYER! LOL! Sorry! Couldn't resist. Seriously, all she will ever accomplish is to continue to piss off the city council, cause more folks to actually buy the books or check them out at a library and read them, and realize what a bufoon she so very much IS. She has even ADMITTED TO NOT READING the very books she wants banned. If anything this very case undermines the fundies stance on things (because yet again, they look like extremist dolts) , and furthers the cause for freedoms of speech, of religion, of separation of church and state. We're in good hands, folks. Just keep your chin up, walk with pride, and keep the faith. They will fade away like old paint, while we withstand the storm and show America who truly has found their way along the path.
Walk in beauty...

This Is Pure Stupidity Apr 11th. at 5:05:47 pm EDT

Shadow (Webb City, Missouri) - Email Me

The woman has not even read the books, how can she say truthfully they are bad ( which they are not) . Pure stupidity and intolerance of something her does not even understand. We should ban the bible for the schools, it has murder, adultry, slavery, and witchcraft in it.

I have to wonder if this woman has even read the first page of The Sorcerer's Stone, let alone the whole book itself. I speak from experience when I say the book does promote something and that is.... READING! My younger brother didn't read at all until that book crossed his path, now he is an avid reader. Rowling does incorporate actual mythical and folklore beings into her books, but as for anything remotely witch-like? Not so much. This woman needs to understand what it is she is fighting and the only way to do that is to read the books...rather ironic don't you think? =)

Separation Of Church & State Anyone?? Apr 11th. at 2:36:10 pm EDT

Heather Lynn Fairfield (Canton, Massachusetts) - Email Me

Um ... does this mean that we can remove ANY book in the public school libraries that might possibly promote religion??

That IS the crux of this lady's argument, isn't it?? That these books (in her mind) promote a religion that she does not agree with??

So ... following her lead, we should also eliminate ...

Are You There God, it's Me Margaret (promotes both Catholicism & Judaism)

The Scarlet Letter (promotes Christianity)

A Christmas Carol (promotes Christianity)

Practically ANYTHING by C.S. Lewis (promoting Christianity)

The Lord of The Rings Trilogy (promotes Paganism or Pagan-like beliefs)

The DaVinci Code (promotes Christianity)

Books by Piers Anthony, Greg Bear, Terry Bisson, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Mike McQuay, Thomas M. Disch, Terry England, Dean Ing, Fritz Leiber, James Morrow, David Morse, Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Steven Barnes, Alexei Panshin, Frederik Pohl, Kim Stanley Robinson, Robert J. Sawyer, Robert Sheckley, Dan Simmons, Connie Willis, and Robert Charles Wilson (promoting Unitarianism)

Any religion's holy book [ie. The Bible, The Torah, The Koran] (promotes that religion)

We could go on and on and on here, but I think we've all got the point.

If we're going to start removing books from the public school libraries because people think that they might be promoting a particular religion, there is going to be a serious shortage of reading material for our kids, don't you think?

For anyone who is a student at www.witchschool.com, the largest official online school for Pagan courses has been put up for sale on ebay! There was no warning or anything. I tried to log in at www.witchschool.com, but the server keeps timing out! Their server is probably flooded with people complaining about the owner's decision.

I wonder what frightens her most--that the Children think and decide for themselves,
that they challenge the questionable powers that be and strike a victorious blow for "True Justice", or perhaps the idea that those in-charge might not always have the interest of the "Greater Good" at heart???

I imagine it is very disconcerting for our Sister to even entertain the idea that those "Humans" she follows blindly could be less than honorable...Perhaps she fears an entire generation might be encouraged to think for themselves and one day rise up to challenge the powers that be and the status quo...

What a glorious day--when the wool is cast from (All) our eyes and we are faced with responsibility of thinking and choosing for ourselves...

Peace and Love on the path of the future "FreeThinking" Generation...

Blessed be Their Path...

I really hate to sing the praises of anything in the completely vulgar television shock-media...

...but this time, I think the folks from South Park nailed it with a line they gave Kyle.

"I don't need a crusader. I need a Mom."

Others have said it, and I'll reiterate the emotion: With the time and money this Christian Soldier has poured into legal action, she could have at least given every book her kids brought home from the library a quick read-thru...

...and probably played a few board games, had some discussions about her values, and taught them how to put together a really killer book report into the bargain.

Sheesh.

My daughter starts school this August. I sincerely hope I'll do a better job of deciding where to expend my energy than this nutter.

that she says she doesn't have time to completely read the books, yet she apparently has the time to pursue a lawsuit. And I agree with another poster. Our response to her claim that HP encourages Witchcraft should be "Yeah? So What?".
