Ga. Judge: Keep Potter Books In School

Author: AP   Source: Lake County Register

Title: GA. JUDGE: KEEP POTTER BOOKS IN SCHOOL

The adventures of boy wizard Harry Potter can stay in Gwinnett County school libraries, despite a mother's objections, a judge ruled Tuesday.

Laura Mallory, who argued the popular fiction series is an attempt to indoctrinate children in witchcraft, said she still wants the best-selling books removed and may take her case to federal court.

If reading your books promotes witchcraft, like the woman says..... then reading the EXORCIST must promote devil worshiping, or reading ROOTS promotes bigotry and prejudice, or even reading THE BIBLE promotes religious intolerance towards other religions. Hmmm, perhaps it does, since reading the BIBLE does actually promote intolerance and hatred, the past 2000 years has been proof enough for that. Give me a copy of any Anne Rice novel or Stephen King novel anytime. J.K Rowling, I haven't had the pleasure of reading your books, but give me time, I am sure that I will love them also. And as for crazy lady Potter hater... well, may the goddess shine her love into her heart soon, or we will just have to turn her into something horrible, like a wart covered toad.

...apparently, without a brain behind it.

"At Tuesday's hearing, Mallory argued in part that witchcraft is a religion practiced by some people and, therefore, the books should be banned because reading them in school violates the constitutional separation of church and state.

" 'I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again,' Mallory said. 'I think we need him.' "

These statements are mutually exclusive.

Although I must admit that, when a mother can say she has too little time to, say, read the books her children brings home or teach them why she believes certain things are inappropriate...

...and yet that same mother has hundreds of hours to pour into a legal battle over said books...

...we certainly need *some* kind of help. And it probably better come from Something smarter and more powerful than the creatures who pull this crap.

"Jesus never let me down. Jesus used to show me the score. Then they put Jesus in show business. Now it's hard to get in the door. It's the blind leading the blind... If God will send His angels..."

Yeah, cheezy. But if the lyric fits...

they think that the HP series contains REAL magic and such? If it did, the broom in the rear window of my car really WOULD be my "other car"!

If this woman were made to pay ALL court fees for constantly losing (0-5, now, is it?) , I'm sure her backers would pull out.

She won't stop. She also won't run out of money, because there are apparently people lending her financial support. At least that's what she said in a previous article. I'm guessing it's not coming from any of the other parents at that school, otherwise wouldn't they be right there beside her in court? She should take that as a sign.

I feel sorry for her kids. Can you imaging being the child of the mother who is trying to ban one of the most beloved book series ever? Someday, some fortunate Therapists are going to make money off of these poor kids.

...with some people.

I once overheard a woman loudly stating how much she hated the Harry Potter books. She then went on to say she was so glad she had strong Christian friends who read all the Harry Potter books and then told her she should hate them and not allow her kids to read them, so that she wouldn't have to do that.

"I maybe need a whole new case from the ground up," Mallory said.

Honey, it isn't "a new case" that you need.

"I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again," Mallory said. "I think we need him."

So let me get this straight, "God" doesn't hear the prayers of children in school anymore? You DID know that no one has every stopped a child from praying in school, right? No..., we have stopped school officials from leading organized prayer. Their job is to teach school subjects, not your religion. Everyone can pray in school, pretty much whenever they want to. What part of that don't you get?

As for childrens' books like Harry Potter, if you had actually read one of that series, or heaven forbid, maybe one or two other real books, you might have discovered that there are a lot more dangerous ideas in the world's literature than made up stories about made up kids in made up places.

Lastly, notice that the every official, hearing board, and judge who has heard your case has ruled, vigorously, against your assertion that these books are dangerous. Do you really, REALLY believe that all of us are being led astray by dark forces? Really? ALL of us? And just you and a few others are the only ones who see the truth? Well, I must say that I admire such conviction. I must also say that I pray that the depth of your belief in your delusions does not lead to more harm or suffering, for you or anyone else.

Remedial Logic Course Needed... May 29th. at 9:11:43 pm EDT
"I maybe need a whole new case from the ground up," Mallory said. The woman, who said two of her four children attend public schools in the county, was not represented by an attorney at the hearing.

...

At Tuesday's hearing, Mallory argued in part that witchcraft is a religion practiced by some people and, therefore, the books should be banned because reading them in school violates the constitutional separation of church and state.
If this woman is indeed representing herself, may her supporters continue to pour money down this lost cause. I also think that the taxpayers of Gwinnett County should be kept very clearly updated on just how much money is going into defending against this cycle of lawsuits from one citizen crusading against a book. Perhaps they can bring a suit against her (and her deep-pockets supporters) "for the sake of the children".

Secondly, she may, indeed, need to rethink her case if it is accurately summed up in the second paragraph of the quote. If she is claiming that a clearly-labeled juvenile fiction series is equivalent to Holy Scripture, she should be able to point to the congregation using it as scripture. Moreover, banning of scripture is banning of scripture, and her own book is then at risk.

If she believes that fictional works related--however tangentially--to, or mentioning, a belief system should be banned, then the "Left Behind" series she has endorsed must follow the same fate as the HP books. Ditto for the C.S. Lewis books, the J.R.R. Tolkien series, works by Madeleine L'Engle, Mother Goose, Louisa May Alcott , The Brothers Grimm, Lloyd Alexander, Hans Christian Anderson, Charles Dickens, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Ursula K. Le Guin, et cetera. Perhaps a competent conservative lawyer or a compassionate judge could point this out to her.

If she is truly committed to "constitutional separation of church and state" (her argument) then it would be quite interesting to hear her views on "putting prayer back in public schools" and activities such as "Meet You at the Pole".

She has found her purpose in life and seems determined to be living proof that God works in mysterious ways. :-)

You Gotta Be Kidding...... May 29th. at 8:42:40 pm EDT

So, some fascist book burning nitwit wants to remove Harry Potter from school? What ever happened to separation of church and state? Why is it she wishes to force upon children the opinion that it indoctrinates children to Witchcraft? What "moral" right does she speak from? This is the work of fiction, not fact. If it were, my ceiling would be "enchanted to look like the night sky". I really fail to see her logic here, this is a ridiculous reason to clog up the judiciary system. I don't see why it is so controversial in the first place. This is forcing one's point of view onto another, allow the kids to make their own decisions on what to read and what not to read. In today's current society I would think they would be thrilled the kids are reading in the first place. I am really surprised that this even went to court to begin with.........

I Still Can't Find Any Religion In Harry Potter May 29th. at 8:05:21 pm EDT

Shadowbear (Hillsboro, Oregon) - Email Me

The only "religion" in the Harry Potter books is the celebration of Christmas. That's it and that looks suspiciously like christianity to me. If all witches were actually born with the powers the children in Harry Potter have, I'd sure find my spells working a lot better - and my living room would have better furniture and my car would fly and my candles would float - however, since it is not a matter of my religion I seem to be having a little problem with the magic in the books.

I wonder if this woman's children can actually read? She does not seem to abe able to - maybe she should homeschool her kids so they don't accidentally learn something.

One Question, One Suggestion May 29th. at 8:03:53 pm EDT

Stormsinger (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) - Email Me

Question: Who is backing her? And to the tune of how much?

Suggestion: the next time she loses, she should be ordered by the court not to bring suit again until she has read all seven books and can speak from some small position of knowledge.

My bet is that by the time she gets to book three, she's going to be in love with Harry and the rest of the Hogwarts gang. Either that, or she'll never darken our (courthouse) doors again. Either way, we win!

No one should be allowed to protest a book they haven't read. Especially not in a school setting. It should be an automatic Summary Judgment against anyone who tries to ban a book they refuse to read.

"Hasn't got the time..." my semi-non-existant left and right hind feet! She had time for FIVE lawsuits, didn't she?

Hi Laura. We're From Earth, And YOU? May 29th. at 7:12:16 pm EDT

Batman (Madison, Wisconsin) - Email Me

Wow. She certainly puts the FUN in FUNdie, doesn't she? Mindblowing. Absolutely mindblowing. I can't believe that the media even wastes it's time with this ignorant dimwit. I can't believe that the courts actually allow this hearing to even be on the schedule. And to think that we're paying for this individual to have her rediculous case heard in an actual court of law! Ooooh! I'm mad only because it's jackasses like her that clog the system with outlandish cases like this, when the courts could be he. Gee, what's NEXT? Someone suing McDonalds because it made them fat?
This case has zero basis, mainly because the woman even admits that she's never even READ THE BLOODY BOOKS! Pathetic. "Umm, like yeah, your honor, I've no idea what I'm doing here except that I'm an automaton for the religious right so like, I want the Harry Potter books banned because they're like, totally EEEEEE-VULL. [blink, blink, blink]
As I said earlier. Let this emmy-award winner sue till she's blue in the face. Let her shout until everyone in the bloomin' WORLD can hear her & whom she TRULY represents (religious fascists) so that they can have their turn at speaking, for then it will be the world's turn in which to respond back to them, and respond back, the world shall. Soon enough, all of us will see through their faux-spirituality and see all the hate & vitriol they spew. Soon enough we shall see their true face. Some say for her to shut up & go away. Oh no. Let her speak. By all means, let her scream until she can scream no more, and then we shall have peace, because by then, the noise of the rest of the world will have drowned her out.

Perhaps The County May 29th. at 6:16:11 pm EDT

Ananta Androscoggin (Greene, Maine) - Email Me

should force Miss Laura into a competency hearing, since she has made it quite evident that she does not live in the real world.

Being 0 for 5 probably puts her into that idiotic mindset that convinces the madman that he is a true religious martyr, similar to the idiocy which recruits suicide bombers. Perhaps that State's Child Protective Services agency, whatever it's called locally, should take a look into what kind of stresses and abuse she is putting all four of her children through, not just the two in elementary school.

I also find myself wondering how much and what kind of moronic encouragement she is obviously receiving, to make her so sure in her own imagination that she is a "Genuine Christian Hero" for her continued display of the lack of a discernible I.Q.

I swear, it seems that in order to be a Christian in the U.S.A. you are first required to NEVER learn anything about the basic legal structure of the country. Just because the Christians have had the special right of exclusive access to the public schools and the courts and the halls of government for so long does not mean that it was ever constitutional. The fact that others are now standing up for their own rights under that very same constitution, pointing out over and over again the exclusivity which should not be, should never have been, is cutting into their formerly complete control of our country.

This is what has them screaming!

I tell you, there are more and more days lately when I've begun to suspect that the only TRUE Christians anywhere on the planet during the last 1700 years has been the Shakers.

She's trying to ban them citing the separation of church and state, yet in the same breath wants religion (hers) back in schools again?
I hope the Supreme Court makes her pay for wasting everyone's time.
I agree with the decision. Since it IS a fantasy, it really isn't promoting much of anything. Which could also be true of much of the bible. Except that she is actively trying to promote her religion while trying to ban others. And she's going to keep on beating this dead horse until it turns to hockey to get what she wants. If she can.
