The Witching Hour

Author: Jason Dennis Source: WTVM (GA)

Title: THE WITCHING HOUR
On Halloween, some trick or treaters will be dressed up as witches, but there are some real witches in our area too. We talked to an atheist woman who practices witchcraft.
We also talked to a Columbus woman who says she used to be a witch, involved in demonic rituals. She asked us to disguise her voice, face, and name.
"You would offer yourself to satan by allowing yourself to be chanted over and to perform sexual favors," she told us.
Rape, drugs, and sacrifices - all part of life as a witch, according to this Columbus woman, who says she used to be one. The so-called former witch says, at age 14, her high school sweetheart, part of a cult similar to Wica, introduced her to witches and warlocks.

Is there some kind of requirement or law that says once a person becomes Born Again Christian they have to make up this kind of stuff? Is then there another requirement to find someone to print it for them in order to be recognized as one of the fold?
Step 1 Have a mental breakdown Step 2 Find a group that excepts the mentally deranged. Step 3. Give a reenactment of horrible ritualistic abuse that explains frequent crying jags, and a sudden increase in your popularity but offers absolutely no positive proof what so ever to back up insanely outlandish claims... Step 4. Find a newspaper to print or a television talk show to air it or a book dealer to publish your story... Step 5 Do a press, tv or book tour... Step 6 Receive acceptance into the fold...

Those of us who frequent this website can see immediately how ridiculous this article is. The trouble is, many of those unfamiliar with Wicca/Paganism will accept this drivel as truth because it appears in a major media outlet.
It will take 10 truthful, accurate articles on Paganism to undo the damage done by this one piece of slanderous tripe.

I don't know WHAT kinda crowd this woman got roped into, but they CLEARLY WERE NOT Pagan OR Witches. NO self-respecting Pagan or Witch would rape or torture.... sound more like she got shanhi'd into the local rape / pedophile gang!
GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD, FUNDIES, PAGANS AND WITCHES DO NOT RAPE, TORTURE, DEMAND SACRIFICES OR BELIEVE IN THE "DEVIL"!!!!!!!!!!
As many others here stated, the devil is the xtian boogyman, NOT ours. I myself don't even believe in a "devil". In Wicca you are responsible for your own actions - remember the Rule of Three? This woman need some serious counseling and meds....
Love to all

This artical is bad. If this is affilated with Fox since they are more Truthful than cnn or msnbc since both networks have lied about what US soldiers do in Iraq while Fox tells the truth. those other news networks are left wing garbage filled with lies. but back to the subject and off of the rant this is the worst artical I have ever read.

Why bother reading the rest of this article, enuf is said in the first few sentences.....
1st) an "Atheist" is one who professed not to follow any religion, so a Wiccan cannot be atheist. duhh 2nd) this is yet another ignorant story saying witches are evil.
Ya know, Christians get 'prayed over' too? THEY get possessed by the devil, not us.
But. I'm preaching to the converted here... 'nuf sed'

first off, i really dislike the "proclaimed" part. do people of other religions say that they are a proclaimed _______? fill in the blank. secondly, the police were not aware of these incidents at flat rock park. rather it's true or not, who knows but my experience is that certain groups will do anything to support cause, even if it means lying. after all, some groups HAVE to have a enemy, it gives them purpose, real or imagined. the comment about witches and warlocks? Give me a break, that is so Bewitched. No self respecting Wiccan or Witch would refer to themselves as a warlock, which means oath breaker. Satan is a Christian creation. it has nothing to do with the Old Testement. The Advisary, one of the names in the Old Testement, is different from Satan, Christianites creation. Certain groups use the Old Testament and give it a Christian twist, which is wrong. I agree with the last poster, Kerr Culuhain, would easily be able to debunk this person. Kerr does a wonderful job of showing the truth, rather than the self serving that some groups do, at our expense. I always want to ask, doesn't your 10 Commandments say something about lying and bearing false witness? guess its depends on whether or not it serves the purpose. ( sorry for the sarcasm, but it bugs me to no end.)

Well, the most coherent comment I was able to produce after reading this was something that sounded like "pfffffffttttt!" Now that I have a nice cup of strong tea here, I have had some time to think about this.
I wanted to say something about journalists as a general group. You know, not bothering to research, accepting what they are told, just writing things to get people to react the way I did initially and then proceeding on to the next train wreck. However, in a presumably more sane moment, I have realized that folks reading this and other articles as wild and fantastic as this one will likely be thinking that this is what life is like for Witches as a group. Silly, silly, silly and wrong-headed! So, I will cut some (not all) other journalists some slack here and just marvel at the ease with which this article probably rolled off a keyboard. I mean, with spelling and grammar checkers so readily available, what more could one need to write stuff like this? Ah, of course, willing subjects to feed them material.
Anyone here ask this writer if there is any interest in reading, hmmmm, maybe some of the Kerr Culuhain materials to start with?
OK. sarcasm off. I'm having my tea now. It's the best I seem able to do when confronted with such things.

My letter to:
jdennis@wxtx.com
Your commentary on "Cassonya Douglass" if a bit confusing because she is an "atheist witch" was even handed in the article the "Witching Hour" here:
[Web LINK]
However, the former "Columbus woman witch” smacks of a bad satanic panic story from the 1980s. No names, no dates, no independent confirmation of her fantastic story. There may be some truth to her story if she was terrorized by an abusive boyfriend. Besides a psychotic person claiming to be Wiccan and blaming their crimes on their "religion," in 30 years there hasn’t been one documented case of conviction of any crime related to Wicca by a group of people or coven. Please see more info here:
[Web LINK]
For all the "former witches" who claim any number of heinous acts that they committed when under satans spell, including kidnapping, abuse, rape and murder none of them are behind bars for their crimes. Why? Either local law enforcement is unable to solve "satanic" crimes like normal crime, or they are fabricated claims to serve their own ends.
Until this liable finally goes away for good, REAL Wiccans need to keep defending their culture as one that has nothing to do with the devil who is a fabricated anti-god in the Christian pantheon.
Hopefully this letter will help tone down the sensationalism and allow journalists to listen with skepticism to someone’s fantastic claims.
Goddess Bless, Spatch3@yahoo.com
