Jewish Army Trainee Says He Was Beaten

Author: AP Source: Boston Globe (MA)

Title: JEWISH ARMY TRAINEE SAYS HE WAS BEATEN
Army officials at Fort Benning are investigating the claims of a Jewish soldier in basic training who says he was beaten days after complaining of religious discrimination.
Pvt. Michael Handman of Atlanta says another soldier punched him in the head and knocked him unconscious in an unprovoked attack Sept. 24. He was treated for a concussion.

Mysteries Child (Garfield, Arkansas) - Email Me

I'm pretty sure everyone in AMerica over the age of about 8 knows that "f*ck*ng Jew" and "kike" are, um, terms that it's not OK to use on the playground.
Whether these *ssh*l*s make some claim to be Christian or not, calling throwing well-known pejoratives at someone "inadvertent" reeks of b*llsh*t to me.

Let's see...I, when I was in the Navy from 1996 until 2000, have been the target of routine harassment by the retards in VFA-136 (it's not the "good" squadron everyone made it out to be at the time) even going so far as to draw "666" on my barracks door one time in the dirt. It didn't help that the perps who did this were buddy-buddy with the XO-turned-CO, who unofficially sanctioned this harassment (though I liked the look on his face when I was the only one in my work center to make Third Class Petty Officer when the other two candidates got busted for doing something very stupid) . So yeah, I do have a rather negative view of the f*cking xians. If it weren't for them, I probably would have reupped.

Orion 6Xray (Park City, Kentucky) - Email Me - Web

That the apparent contradictions, or the lack of knowledge about military organization, was evident in the link I posted. That could have just been a typo.
When I was in basic in Ft. Benning in 1998 I was told in a briefing by the post Chaplin that I was not allowed to practice paganism openly in the Army. Later I found out that the Chaplin handbook said otherwise.
While in basic another fellow Pagan from my MEPS station was harassed about being Pagan for several weeks by Drill S argents. When he finally decided he had enough and wanted to leave the military the Drill S argents called a company formation, brought this soldier out in front of every one and told him if he wanted to leave he could walk away right now. As he was walking out of the company area they told him that he had to leave every thing Uncle Sam gave him there and he was not allowed to get his civilian things.
So he stripped butt naked and walked off post, cause even the underwear you wear in basic is military issued. When I went up stairs after the young man left I found a Pagan book he had smuggled into basic under my pillow. He had written me a letter on the inside. It said and i quote:
"Some of us were born to be soldiers, only some of us have been made by the God and Goddess to be warriors. You are one of the latter. Thank You for you help and friendship, and good luck. I feel much safer knowing you are where you are and doing the things you do."
Jason
I helped him out and gave him support when the situation looked as if it was going to turn into what we saw happen to the Jewish soldier. I may have not had anything to do with it but I think if I wouldn't have stood up for him and let it be known that there were more then just one Pagan in this unit he wouldn't have been able to walk off that post.

Oakwind (The Army, Washington DC) - Email Me

As a soldier in the US Army, I was appalled and revolted by what I read in the articles associated with this post, but not very surprised. I have been the victim of religious discrimination myself. Not to the extent that this solider was, but I was a Non-commissioned officer at the time, so it was easier for me to deal with. I see a number of things wrong here, on several sides of the issue. I have seen this pattern over and over again, in my investigations (I was a Military Police Investigator, Criminal Investigations Agent for several years and simply in observing incidents that happened around me...) Most news articles I read about the civilian world and situations like these mirror the pattern as well...
Someone who stands out as different gets "picked on," by 1 or 2 people of bad character (but usually strong-willed and charismatic.) They manage to sway a few others of similar views. Then, these start swaying others by threats and intimidation (usually by implying that they can easily become one of the "different" easily enough. Eventually, mob mentality takes over and things degrade to this point before some higher-level leader realizes that his career is in jeopardy, and steps in with some reactionary courses of action that are meant to be proactive, but were never utilized. By the time it gets to this point, it should be too late for the leaders in question. They failed, and should have to suffer the consequences. But, like most of these situations, they will be sequestered and sheltered by those with larger agendas that also cannot afford the black eye (whose character is also just as weak, but will just as strong.) (Sounds suspiciously like some large Christian groups with leaders that we know, doesn't it?)
This pattern is always present to some degree. As an investigator, I was concerned with finding those few that instigated it, even though little can usually be done about them (of course, this is largely due to a liberal mind-set that removed the "conduct unbecoming" rules from most of the Armed Forces enlisted standards.)
As far as transferring the soldier to another platoon, this is normal operating procedure. Platoons train (mostly) separately, and have different NCO's, sleeping quarters, latrines, dining times, etc. Moving the soldier away from the source of the investigation is an attempt to prevent further degradation, and possible reprisals from the NCO's and others. This is the first "right" thing I have seen this commander do.
I have no idea if we are getting all of the story at this point. The "100 signed affidavits" are obviously from the others in the platoon (and probably another paltoon, 50 in each or so) that are (probably rightfully) scared that they are going to suffer some consequences for their actions, and (most of which) are probably ashamed of them. The mob mentality is still at work here with the "few" intimidating the others through shame, fear and threats. The environment naturally disposes them to protecting each other (its the Army after all, that is what we are taught,) and it places them in positions where it is easy to get stories straight. They are together every minute of every day and have the luxury of being able to gather all at once to go over facts and "imagined" facts.
All of this is pretty simple stuff for me to explain, but the thing that REALLY got me mad was the fact that it was portrayed that the NCO's made mistakes and their actions were "inadvertent!" This is a blatant lie! ALL soldiers are required to undergo mandatory cultural diversity awareness training EVERY 6 MONTHS and NCO's have even more training requirements, of which drill sergeant NCO's HAVE EVEN MORE! The soldiers instigating this should have undergone this training, and the NCO's surely did! The NCO's knew EXACTLY what they were doing, and knew as well that it was wrong. And any other NCO that saw it or heard of it, should have spoken out, or he/she was just as wrong! They should have known that their actions would have inspired others to the same level (they are NCO's - THAT IS THEIR FUNCTION!) If they want to claim that they didn't know, then they need to turn in their stripes and go back to being privates, where they belong!
I think its time that examples were made of these NCO's and the Commander of the unit they belonged to as well. I also think that the instigators of this (the "fellow" soldiers,) should be sent home as well. We (those in the Army that believe in tolerance, diversity and freedom (funny, I thought that is what we were here for in the first place,) don't want you here! We serve in order to support and defend the constitution of the United States, which is a document concerning freedom! If you can't extend those freedoms to our own members, what are you doing here? How can you serve in a capacity that you obviously don't support?

stalkingwolf (Bullhead City, Arizona) - Email Me

something odd caught my eye in the linked articles. Something that any active or former Service member should catch as being impossible.
Both articles state that this young man was moved to a different Company in the same Platoon. There is no way that could have taken place.
A platoon is a segment of a Company. There being as I recall ( and after 30+ years its a little fuzzy) 4 platoons to a Company.

nasionnaich (Stanchfield, Minnesota) - Email Me

From the article: "While the actions of the NCOs (noncommissioned officers) were not meant to be malicious, and were done out of ignorance for regulations and cultural awareness, this does not excuse their conduct," Rollinson said in his letter.
This is pure male bovine manure. ALL NCOs -- especially the drill sergeants -- are made fully aware of what they can, and cannot, do/say to any trainee under their command. I was in the U.S. Military, I know what is/is not allowed. Call me a "conspiracy theorist", but...
I smell a cover-up from Fort Benning and the Pentagon. "not due to religious prejudice" my Aunt Fannie.

This is a real loser squadron, if they didn't stand vigil while he went to the hospital, with full pack and bad temper.
Calling him a Juden doesn't sound any worse, than a "Trainee Under Rigid Discipline," but some of his colleagues seem fraught with eagerness for combat detail.
Someone's time will come, to strut like a turkey, in the season for giving thanks.
