Army Chaplains Must Fill Many Roles

Author: Charmain Z. Brackett Source: Augusta Chronicle (GA)

Title: ARMY CHAPLAINS MUST FILL MANY ROLES
"If someone has a faith that is not my own, what can I do to support their faith?" said Capt. Maschhoff, the chaplain for Fort Gordon's 442nd Signal Battalion.
Fort Gordon is home to a range of faiths, and that leads to an array of duties for its chaplains.
The majority of the post's faith community are Christians, with Catholics the leading denomination, according to Col. Craig Wiley, Fort Gordon's installation chaplain. About 800 people attend services on the post, but many soldiers attend services elsewhere, he said.
There are three chapels at Fort Gordon and locations for Muslims and Wiccans to meet. Jewish believers often attend synagogues off post.
Col. Wiley estimates there are about 20 practicing Wiccans on post and a similar number of Muslims.

R. Cicero (Seattle, Washington) - Email Me

The Army actually represents itself very well. They seem to have a very generous and compassionate attitude regarding all faiths. I've heard mostly good things about the Navy. The Air Force, unfortunately, has lost much face and prestige in the wake of the evangelical takeover or 'revolution,' which was quite oppressive and relentless. Even worse were those unprosecuted, closeted rape scandals. Crimes like that are horrific enough without administrative blinders making it decidedly worse. By all accounts, the Air Force needed a purge at the top, but I doubt that's what they got or have now. Could be wrong. I'd sure like to hear about it from those currently serving. The Marines, from what I hear, have no sense of humor regarding anything outside of rote Christianity. I'm sure it doesn't look that way on paper, in their policies, but I bet the de facto reality is a cruel and very rude awakening for deep thinkers. And yet, isn't it funny how Marines end up becoming some of the most independent-minded service members you'll ever meet, which is pretty charming. That is, until they start partying. Oh, the stories I could tell.

Nocturnal Light (Camp Humphreys, Rep. Korea) - Email Me

Even though I'm on a very "dark" occult path, I have the highest respect for Army chaplains. Even if they are devout Christians, they are very non judgemental and willing to listen to anyone's concern. I've been able to talk to them about problems in my life without them trying to convert me.
