Pagan Festival Seeks Tolerance

Author: Ryan Brooks Source: The Red and Black (Univ. of Georgia)

Title: PAGAN FESTIVAL SEEKS TOLERANCE
Paganism is a word that carries many different connotations. To some, this is not only acceptable, but is encouraged.
"One of the things that brings different Pagans together is tolerance, and we want people to understand the diversity," said Lochele Foley, an assistant research scientist at UGA.
In addition to uniting area Pagans, the Pagan Pride Festival held on Saturday aimed to support religious diversity, celebrate the harvest and hold food donations to benefit Project Safe.

A while back, some good friends & I tried to get a Pagan Pride Day group going here. Sadly, it did seem that the rest of the Pagan community wanted us to fail. There had been rumors about what happened years before which I will not go into. While everyone, who is a Pagan is not a Witch I have ran across some Pagans who feel that their brand of Paganism is better then the rest of us. I am not a huge fan of Wicca in general however if it bought people back to earth based religions & increased our numbers I am all for it. The bickering does need to stop before we become like those who believe in the Judeo-Christian God. Overall, I have to say that the majority of Pagans I have met are real & care about our future. But like with any faith it is the one who just go though the motions who make us look bad. With that said I hope we're able to move past these differences before we become like those other people.

Ok I had no idea there were "witch wars" at all. I mean i've met some rude pagans and I've always corrected them on their.. behavior (like going out of their way to be rude to other religious people who are innocent) .
I've always found other Pagan's to be very pleasant except for those select few.. and even had a small group in high school.. but then again we were all in the same exact clubs so we got along great.

but tolerance among us pagans (especially here) is a joke. We claim to accept everyone, but boy, can the witch wars and backstabbing get fierce! It's one reason why I am an incredibly pessimistic solitary. So many pagan groups are being run by inflated egos and drama queens it disgusts me. Where I live, the backbiting and accusations have gone on for years without any sign of it stopping, and more splinter groups keep popping up. All refuse to interact with each other and in my town, there seems to be an unspoken law that pagan groups are not allowed. I've tried to set up groups in the past few years, but it never got anywhere. People are either too frivolous to commit themselves or don't care. I DARE anyone living in my area to contact me and ask me about getting together. Not every pagan likes being solitary---I hate it, but I can't find ANYONE who's kind enough to open their mind a little bit and reach out to me. SO keep bickering, fellow pagans. When you've finally ground each other into the dirt, maybe you'll find out what your sniping has done to everyone else. It's pissed me off.

In the Pagan community? Really???
Okay, in the past there was plenty, but lately I've noticed more negative posts concerning Wicca and those of us who are, say, more Libertarian than Liberal.
My IQ is 181, but I've been told, "You're an idiot for being a 'Gardnerian' because it's full of crap and lies." Been told the same thing for my fiscal and constitutional political beliefs.
"Witch wars" still happen all the time.
Tolerance??? I truly wish it were so.

While the christian churches all fight among themselves about which chuch their god is going to specifically reach down and pluck from the world he's going to burn, like a sadistic child with a magnifying glass, Pagans don't usually bicker... ever. We don't go around telling each other "No, you have it wrong. The Gods meant this when they said that!"
Yes, I myself have received an email or two from a couple who felt I don't represent the wiccan community in a posative way (to which I remind them I'm not a Wiccan) , I have yet to see any arguments what so ever over anything. Sure, a few corrections of things such as which color means what in candles or weather or not ouija board are safe. I guess that's why so many are turning to Paganism and why we seem to be at the forefront of tollerance in the world religions.
