Rock piles erupt as Big Island issue

Author: Associated Press   Source: Chicago Tribune

Title: Rock piles erupt as Big Island issue

Visitors to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii are being told to resist the temptation to gather volcanic rocks into neat, little stacks.

Piles of rocks along trails, at overlooks and on lava lakes at the Big Island park are a concern to scientists, who say displacing rocks makes research at the sites more difficult.

But Pele Hanoa, 82, compared the practice to sacrilege, since the national park contains many sites considered sacred to Hawaiians.

Piling rocks in a sacred site is an intrusion, if it's not part of the normal tradition. Especially if one doesn't really have permission to do so. Especially since those that do it have scant or no knowledge of the traditions involved. And while it is true that perhaps this is done with the best of intentions, it may be considered by some as an intrusion. Best to go to the local sources for how to leave a proper offering or paying proper respects. As to the scientific community-- disturbing rocks upsets the geologic research in progress and causes loss of valuable information- especially if the pacement of the stone is serving as some sort of marker for the placement of a stratum volcanic ash, of recent lava flows, beach erosion, or other ongoing studies where natural markers are essential to show a scale of progress.

In some cultures, I was under the impression that stacking rocks was a way of recognizing the sacred spirit dwelling in an area. My memory is hazy here, but it had something to do with Dahruma piles I believe. Still, the area is a place sacred to the natives of the area, and the volcanic observatory really can't afford to have the "evidence" of past volcanism moved around.

If the rock piles were indeed started as some visitor's method of honoring the local spirit, perhaps future visitors wishing to express the same respect could make an offering of a less physical nature . . . perhaps by internal prayer and a gift of energy and thought. If someone insists on piling up rocks now that it has been objected against, what the law says goes, does it not?

Pile rocks on your own property, if Pele wants rock piles, I am sure she can and will make them herself.

I understand the concern about taking rocks out of the area, but first of all who is so obsessed with stacking rocks and secondly why is it destroying both scientific study and the holiness of the land? If anyone could tell me more about this problem in depth maybe I could understand it; right now it makes no sense to me.
