Mass Whale Deaths Tied To U.S. Navy Sonar, Report Says

Author: The Yomiuri Shimbun, KRT Wire   Source: Miami Herald (FL)

Title: MASS WHALE DEATHS TIED TO U.S. NAVY SONAR, REPORT SAYS

The U.S. Navy's deployment of active sonar to detect submarine activity is believed to have been responsible for at least six incidents of mass death and unusual behavior among pods of whales in the last 10 years, according to a recent U.S. Congressional Research Service report.

In one of the most serious incidents, 150 to 200 melon-headed whales were observed milling in Hanalei Bay off Hawaii's Kauai Island during a Rim of the Pacific Exercise on July 3, 2004, after midfrequency sonar was used, the CRS report said.

Known as RIMPAC, the naval exercise included the participation of Japan and other U.S. allies in Asia and the Pacific.

Urban Legend.... Apr 16th. at 8:50:48 pm EDT

Snopes.com has already debunked this kind of 'fact' as an Urban Legend.

Sad to say, the greater danger really *does* come from boats that get too close to nature's gentle giants.

Blind And Deaf. And That's The Human's Condition Apr 16th. at 5:06:34 pm EDT

Sonar is more than hearing. Actually, it is a whale's eyesight. The water, at the depths they travel is often murky at best, and sonar was developed to help them navigate, as well as hunt and communicate over huge distances, similar to bats and far better than elephant communication. Only while bats need it part of the time, Whales have raised it to a higher, more articulate form. Tactile sensations might have become second best as a result. While they could avoid danger through tactile sensations when the senses are damaged, it still takes time to develop other senses which have languished as Mr. Takemura might find out if by some fate he was ever rendered blind and deaf at the same time. As to the whales, they don't have the luxury of taking time to learn, as humans can, since their very survival requires those senses that were damaged at the moment.

Stupid People Apr 16th. at 11:56:24 am EDT

Akira Takemura needs to have his hearing destroyed to demonstrate that lack of hearing is a true handicap.
The insand idea that it's ok to use devices that destroy the hearing of whales because "they have other senses" is both cruel and stupid. I'm shocked that one would be so mean-spirited and ignorant to even suggest such a thing.
I'm acrimonious.
