Wiccan Community Dispels Stereotypes

Author: KMEG-14   Source: KMEG-14 (IA)

Title: WICCAN COMMUNITY DISPELS STEREOTYPES

The Sioux City community struggles to come to terms with the murders of two young sisters. The suspect, the girls' stepfather Larry Harris told police he was casting a spell that went bad.

He's in police custody on 2-million dollars bond. While police continue their investigation, they're learning more about how Harris' religious beliefs contributed to the killings. And as KMEG 14's Denise Hnytka reports, that concerns one theological organization.

The story of Kendra and Alysha touches the heart of the Wiccan community. They're saddened by the tragedy and the suspect's suggestion that the girls were killed by witch craft. It's a practice that's often negatively linked to the practice of Wicca.

The Sioux City Media Coverage Jan 12th. at 9:00:18 pm EST

Rev Jorinx (Sioux City, Iowa) - Email Me

1. Dana, nice job on representing the Pagan community to the media.

2. The local media have been trying very hard to approach the matter in a balanced, objective way. I think this this is due to a great deal of public outreach work by several local Pagan groups and individuals, including but not limited to Yarrow Circle, Wyndfyre, and Siouxland First Wiccan Congregation.

3. The real tragedy is what happened to the two girls. They were the victim of a brutal crime.

Weak Article Jan 9th. at 1:09:26 pm EST

Young Coyote (W. Hempstead, California) - Email Me

I know a lot of my fellow posterss here like the positive spin Wicca gets, which is nice, but the article is so short that I think it fails in what it sets out to do.

The impression I got from this article is "Wicca isn't evil 'cause we have the "harm none" and three-fold rule. See?"

And that's it.

Maybe I was foolishly hoping for more substance.

And I agree with previous comments that, while our image may get by unscaythed with the general public, this is going to just be more fodder for the fundies.

I'm utterly shocked that world net daily, and like minded sites haven't grabbed ahold of this, especially with the contents of the last edition of whistleblower...

...what it must feel like to be a moderate muslim...

I think the article is very well written and I'm glad that it was published, but this whole tragic scenario has me feeling quite ill...

There are degrees of seperation, and the obvioussensationalism of the whole affair, but this will provide anecdotal support for the fundamentalists for years to come. Though this will likely only cement in those groups minds what they already believed anyway...

*checks the article*
*checks the region of the US where this happened*
*checks the article again*

A POSITIVE article about Wicca coming out of IOWA? When did I step into the Twilight Zone?

In all seriousness, it's about time more rural regions of the US are catching up with the rest of the Western world.

Maybe Something Positive Can Come Out Of This Jan 9th. at 10:23:40 am EST

Silverwing (Colorado Springs, Colorado) - Email Me

What a sad thing that this horrible event would be the spark of discussions that I wish would be able to come out among people who are willing to listen to each other about so many things. Every group has it's fanatics and, sadly, it is the far end of the bell curve that seems to get the press. It is because of this that really inaccurate public profiles get created.

In reading through the string of articles this morning on this topic, I am seeing some resetting of public opinion happening, or at least the possibility of that. I just wish the catalyst had not been what it was.

Now Here's What I Like To See! Jan 9th. at 9:25:58 am EST

Seshen (San Antonio, Texas) - Email Me - Web

A positive article with a response from the Wiccan community that is not counterbalanced with the Christian viewpoint. I especially liked the "theological organization" phrase used in relation to Wicca. The times, they are a-changin'!
