Letter: Don't Blame Mother

Author: Rev. Jeva Singh-Anand Source: Sioux City Journal (IA)

Title: DON'T BLAME MOTHER
Much has been made of Marla Harris's refusal to hate the man who is charged with the murder of her daughters, Kendra and Alyssa, and that bothers me.
Refusing to hate someone is a sign of moral and spiritual strength, of personal integrity.

... and the path this discussion has taken, esp. on the Sioux City Journal website, has become bothersome.
I would like to state the following points, since they were brought up in this forum:
-Sioux City itself is more cosmopolitan than the denizens of the surrounding Barbary would have it. -The suspect identified himself as a Pagan, but he was not associated with Siouxland First Wiccan Congregation. -I happen to be male, not female (as a previous poster assumed) . -Again, the real issue is the fact that a horrible crime has been committed.

To seek justice. A crime is a crime. To have feelings about someone who committed a heinous act is also not totally unknown- though it is often heavily questioned, especially in cases of murder or incest of family members. She however, does need help to get through what is a traumatic experience- and I hope she gets it. Those that eagerly blame the religion need to get a clue. The faith isn't the problem. There, but for the grace of the powers go them. There have been as many crimes done in the name of a great many religions, some of them christian-that still doesn't sanctify them or make them any less reprehensible as a result.

Okay, I think the general concensus is that Iowa is filled with idiotic "atheists" and members of the KKK simultaneously attacking the small Pagan community, thus attempting to enforce mob rule. One look at the comment thread on this article is more than enough proof.
Terry Goodkind wrote it best: "People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie either because they want it to be true or because they are afraid it might be true." Look at how many of those hicks think we're either a bunch of nuts or baby-eating debbil worshippers. This isn't a debate we're going to win by mere words.

How many see refusal to hate as being the same thing as forgiveness. Somehow I don't see it that way. Hatred is a fierce, powerful emotion that can totally destroy the person who hates. It makes the wrong done to you the most important thing in your life and drains your life energy into supporting it. Hatred is the most destructive emotion to the person feeling it that I know of. The person hated, of course, goes on with their life as before because your hatred does nothing to them.
Lack of forgiveness is more passive. If the person who has wronged you and has not repented, apologized and tried to make it right, the wrong is still there and forgiveness is not. It is a minor emotion not requiring a large part of your life to sustain and, while the unforgiven may go about their life without dismay, you are not destroying your life over the incident either.
And that, is my 2 cents worth of psychology per Dr Shadowbear - tv program to follow, I'm sure.

These people commenting are christian in name only like a kid getting a Harley tattoo and saying he's a biker. Their argument is weak with nothing to back it up or their "facts" are pulled from the Gods knows where. One even suggested that the Constitution says that the states can choose what religions are allowed. And when there is nothing to back up these claims they resort to verbal attacks, mudslinging and name calling, all proof of a weak argument. A real christian, and yes these people follow jesus' teachings such as charity, compassion and love of their fellow man. Some examples are the women who happened to be minister, picked me up when my car broke down. The conversation turned to religion and when it came out I was Wiccan, she didn't kick me out of the car,she asked what it was really about because she had heard this and that. We both left with a better understanding of each others beliefs. Another was a priest of all people I explained my beliefs and he was actually surprised of all the misconceptions . These go on and on. So I've come to the conclusion that those who brag the most do the least. It's the minority loud mouths who give the rest a bad name, and the same goes for Wiccans, a few give the rest a bad image. So don't judge them all because of a few backwoods morons, just like we don't want a small group of misguided people representing the rest of us. Bless Be Us All

"Marla Harris, my heart goes out to you. I grieve with you. None of this was your fault.
None of it!"
On the contrary, it's all MY fault, and I look forward to the day when Jeva can huna her own responsibility.
Actually, it is my fault. If the Ministers of the Accused were doing their jobs, this fellow would have no problem exposing his step-son to the appropriate accusations, but he does have a problem, which is his problem, and it's cluttering up the investigation.
Issues in Second Life, Mystic Academy, have turned my thoughts towards the development of an Executioner's Dinner, where the Clients could be remembranced, and the chain of command could take responsibility for their own failures, and something of that approach might be useful here.
Haven't I already drawn a card, on this matter? Drawn is The King of Wands Inverted: A person who may persue a matter to ruin; Cruelty; Conflict; Selfishness; Sadism; One who causes unnecessary disturbance and sadness; Perversity. Hmmm, that speaks to Spirit City, but how does it speak here?

These are the people we're supposed to respect? We're constantly told that we're bigoted for being angry with Christianity or that we're overexagerrating how they feel about us. Well, read those comments! If it was up to them, our religion would be banned and all of us locked up!
How is this the mother's fault? The husband was NOT Wiccan. She didn't know he was violent or that he was going to murder his daughters. The only reason Wicca is being blamed is because it's a conveniant scapegoat that, in all honesty, has nothing to do with the crime. That woman is amazing in being able to forgive her husband. Most people would never have the strength to do that!
Ugh. Looks like some people missed "love your neighboor" in fundie 101.

I found those comments to be of greater note than what the Rev. said.
I appreciate the Rev's words, but I'm more interested in the reactions is caused. Suffice to say, the mid-west still appears like a backwards country to me. (Apologies to those pagans that live there, but your Christian neighbors don't exactly elevate your states' image)

I have noticed that when people's hearts are filled with hate and ignorance, they attack not only the stated targets of their hate but anyone who won't share and reinforce their hateful world view, who won't justify other's hate by engaging in it themselves.
What happened to this woman's children is a horrible tragedy done by a very evil man. It is not, however, an excuse not attack millions of others who have done no wrong, merely because this man's stated religion feeds their prejudices. Nor an open invitation to judge whether this woman's grief is "good enough".
How can one be outraged by a crime and yet also attack one of the victims?

Despite the fact that the writer made a statement that everyone (who posted a comment) seems to agree with, the ignorance of people still manages to come out... Because yes... it is entirely the fault of this Reverand that someone who was clearly mentally unbalanced murdered his two step daughters.. because they are both from the pagan comunity... what clear and well founded logic.
