Outside Des Moines: Marriage License Applications And Protest Petitions

Author: Register Staff Source: Des Moines Register (IA)

Title: OUTSIDE DES MOINES: MARRIAGE LICENSE APPLICATIONS AND PROTEST PETITIONS
About 60 people waited this morning for the doors to open at the Wayne County Courthouse.
None was there to get a marriage license. They were there to oppose same-sex marriages.
Cathy Johnson of Lineville stood at the courthouse door and collected petitions with at least 190 signatures. The petitioners asked Recorder Angela Horton not to issue licenses to same-sex couples. They also called for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.
County recorders across Iowa received similar petitions. Dozens of licenses were issued in the state’s most populated counties. A handful of ceremonies were held when judges waived the standard three-day waiting period.
Throughout Iowa, county recorders were receiving similar petitions. Also, in the state's most populated counties, recorders were busy issuing marriage licenses. In rural counties, however, few if any licenses were issued.

The most recent comment at the time I read the article was this:
"So does this mean a man can now marry his brother, to provide health benefits due to employment?"
Reply: "Yes."
Am I missing something here? Has this been legal ANYWHERE in the past two centuries? Why would someone even THINK that this is what the new law meant?
Oh, and by the way, Jerry Lee Lewis (a famous male singer in the 50's) took a woman named Myra Gale Brown as his third wife. Did I say woman? I meant thirteen year old girl. And she was his first cousin once removed.

are fairly simple, but I didn't want to post the big explanations here and bore your eyes. I'll put the link for those arguments in the "Additional link" slot.
I agree with previous poster, I barely got through one page of their comments. I wish people would stop using religious works as inflexible fact. And I really wish they would stop suggesting I read their book. I did. Is that so hard to believe? Guess so.

The religious right are always "right", even when they are dead wrong. Arguing with them is a waste of time because they are too convinced of their own stance. This would be fine, but the point of their evil is when they decide that everyone else must walk in step with them- no matter what it costs, and any dissent is considered anathema to their cause-and an unforgivable evil when people either are different- or want and choose to be different. In reality, it is a power trip in these attempts to keep people in line and serves little beyond their own self aggrandizement. There is nothing wrong with Gay marriages or partnerships of any kind. The sin and evil they speak of is in their own minds only. I have seen just as many hetero relationships that have proven to be just as disgusting, if not more so in actuality as Gay relationships are often accused of being. The only difference-and the reality behind this power trip-is that Gays cannot have children on their own. Hence the brou ha ha over breeding rights and why Gays shouldn't get together. The only real abomination here- is that children are not being born and raised in "their" way. Sin- like Morality-is merely a catch-all phrase that has whatever meaning the beholder chooses to have to serve whatever purpose is most convenient. Not always the right one.

It is frustrating to argue with the religious right. The only arguments they can give are scripture and quoting the bible. They cannot understand that if you are not Christian, then you do not believe that the bible is the 'word of God.' And if you do not believe in the bible, then the words have no meaning to you. You can try to engage them in an intellectual conversation, and they always go back to quoting scripture. Read the comments after the article and you will see my point. I have a headache, and I didn't even get halfway through all the comments.

Would you [civil servant] mind breaking the law and not give legal marriage certificates to this minority group because my personal religious convictions compel me to find them icky?
No?
Why, oh why are you oppressing me?

I think Olbermann said it best: "What does this have to do with you?"
Same-sex couples getting married doesn't change anything about these peoples' lives. They can still get married, they still keep the same benefits, and they can continue to deny their existence. Their churches don't have to hold the ceremonies, and the only places that need to acknowledge their union is the governmental institutions, health care, and employers.
So why do they still fight against giving others the chance at their supposed joy? (I say supposed because of all the divorces and unhealthy marriages we heterosexuals have.) Why can't we live and let live?
