New Invention To Detect Caches Of Cash

Author: Chuck Oxley, Associated Press Source: Boston Globe (MA)

Title: NEW INVENTION TO DETECT CACHES OF CASH
 Ah, the smell of money.
Soon people will be looking for ways to mask it.
Drug traffickers who ship profits abroad in suitcases of cash are not apt to be thrilled with some new inventions being developed by federal scientists at the Idaho National Laboratory.
One sniffs the air for currency's chemical signature -- it can pick up a stack of bills from about 10 feet away. Another device beams electrons through packages or luggage to detect trace metals in the green ink.
And a third project, not yet started, would actually scan serial numbers of individual bills into a database.
The lab's lead scientist, Keith Daum, says the goal is to intercept cash used in illegal drug or terrorism transactions.

If they just gave up the "War On Drugs" and put the same kind of money and work into addiction treatment programs, and finding a way to cure drug addictions, they would be doing something worth while......

Terry (Irvington, Virginia) - Email Me

There's a really simple two step solution to make the use of this type of obnoxious, privacy invasive technology moot, other than perhaps by criminal gangs (or is that who we're already discussing here?) .
Eliminate 1920's and later Rockefeller Commission drug policy and related laws.
Eliminate the IRS, which cannot operate within the law, as there is no possible auditable definition of "income" which can comply with 1st, 4th, 5th, and 14th Amendment restrictions on law and government.
Both of those schemes amount to violent crime, as they're designed to circumvent Constitutional law, not exist within its limits, while being implemented at gunpoint. The IRS admits (rarely, in court) it cannot implement Tax Code from Congress and comply with the 4th or 5th Amendments, as if that means their regulations or statute from politicians somehow preempt our Constitution. They downplay the intent to favor corporate, public prayer predators over private personal practice of religion. That includes so-called nonreligious or secularist beliefs and practices demanding equal protections of law, and many other reasons far too extensive for simple discussion.
Present drug laws are a cause of most violent and property crime (as verifiable tracking NCIC data since the 1960's) , worse than that caused by alcohol Prohibition last century. In large part they're about circumventing civil rights to religious and ethnic practices using spiritual or self-medicinal substances, and designed to illegally favor Calvinist dogma. If that were their only basis they'd likely fail, but like other discriminatory social policies pushed by RRR factions, drug laws also have economic beneficiaries. 95% of cash flow related to drug black markets flows in corporate and government revenue streams, making what Noam Chomsky calls our Prison Industrial Complex popular with many of the same institutions which publicly decry the very thing they proliferate.
Decriminalization of drugs would shunt the legal side market which is most of the drug industry. It would also collapse 95% of the inflated black market prices (already only 5% of the total) , while returning those who use drugs for civil rights related non-addiction purposes inside our law, plus allow more effective and less costly medical harm reduction policy for addicts. Just as after the end of Prohibition, we'd no doubt see crime related to any black market plummet.
Instead, yet again, we see what are fundamentally unConstitutional public policies, playing on the fraud they somehow keep us safe while in reality they cause many forms of violence, used to excuse yet another form of major privacy invasion and further erosion of our basic civil and human rights.
But, violent crime is good, if you're a politician without unifying issues in a diverse society. Almost everyone wants less violent crime, but for fraud pandering politicians, it's far easier to pedal that agenda if you play the "infinite game" (won by continuing to play, not by reaching stated end goals) of causing more crime, which in turn makes for a winning issue. If only voters saw through this fraud, rather than treating dog and pony shows as if honest and real, and voted the bastards out. From the rooftops, if the ballot box fails.....

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

It might mean one could get badgered if drug money turns up in a child's birthday gift, or in the pants pocket of the kid cutting grass in the neighborhood, Or if someone confronts me about what books I buy or music I listen to when I pay cash for them. I'll miss that anonymity.
