Idaho Gov Calls For Wolf Kill

Author: Jesse Harlan Alderman, Associated Press   Source: Yahoo

Title: IDAHO GOV CALLS FOR WOLF KILL

Idaho's governor said Thursday he will support public hunts to kill all but 100 of the state's gray wolves after the federal government strips them of protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter told The Associated Press that he wants hunters to kill about 550 gray wolves. That would leave about 100 wolves, or 10 packs, according to a population estimate by state wildlife officials.

The 100 surviving wolves would be the minimum before the animals could again be considered endangered.

"I'm prepared to bid for that first ticket to shoot a wolf myself," Otter said earlier Thursday during a rally of about 300 hunters.

Be respectful when you contact him. I sent a letter just now about this issue. It went something like this:

I strongly encourage the governor, Mr Otter, from the course of slaughtering 550 gray wolves. That would leave only about 100 wolves, or 10 packs. I would like to see a scientific study that supports the opinion that "wolves are rapidly killing elk and other animals essential to Idaho's multimillion-dollar hunting industry."

From what I understand, wolves mainly subsist off of rats and rabbits. If a sick or diseased elk is brought down by a pack, who does this hurt 'Idaho's multimillion-dollar hunting industry?' I believe humans only eat healthy game.

I stronly encourage the governor to look into the matter before acting on a seemingly knee jerk opinion.

Sincerely,
Chris

Now A Hunter Weighs In. Jan 15th. at 1:06:00 am EST

RavenDW (Lake Odessa, Michigan) - Email Me

Yes I am a hunter and yes I shoot and kill deer, elk, squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, and woodchucks. I thank the animal and the gods for letting me have a successful hunt. All but the woodchucks I eat and do not waste. (woodchucks dig under barn foundations and collapse them) I do not hunt coyote, bear, raccoon, fox, and many others because they will not feed my family. I live in Michigan where I am lucky to be able to hunt many animals.

I am also a hunting safety instructor and I get each years statistics for the hunting seasons as well as the estimated poaching that occurs in our state. We have a somewhat healthy wolf population around 200 at last years count that grows each year. Last year we lost 42 elk to poaching and 2 to wolves. The DNR uses a lottery system for permits to keep the elk population to 1000 head because that is all that the area they are in can sustain and keep all the elk healthy. We lost 15 moose to poachers and none to wolves. (there is no moose season) We lost 15 wolves to poachers and 2 to cars. They can’t even count the deer losses because out heard is around 1.5 million.

In our state right now we have 3 huge problems with cloven hoofed animals, they are chronic wasting disease, bovine tuberculosis, and a liver parasite. The biggest way that these diseases are transmitted is by people feeding deer in their back yard year round for viewing the animals. This causes two problems; first it makes deer congregate in a smaller area and they breath on the food passing germs and bacteria to the food and other animals. Second it makes the deer less fearful of people and roads causing more damage to cars and crops.

Why am I telling you all this information. Because, a lot of pagan people see hunting as an evil tradition that is no longer needed to live. I am telling you that it is needed because we have messed with the environment so much that with out hunting some animals would over populate. This causes two problems, sick animals with a massive die off and more destruction of crops, cars, and gardens let alone the money we spend on fixing what they destroy. We have an invasive species of Russian Boor that escaped of ranches in the upper peninsula that are tearing up the forests and attacking people and pets. These things can get over 400 lbs and are mean. So you see IGNORANT PEOPLE are the worst enemies of animals and nature.

As for wolves, no wolf pack in their right mind would take on a healthy elk IF they could catch it. They do not want to get injured. In the wild injury means death most of the time. A fat cow maybe but an elk no. In the 70’s a biologist went to Alaska to study the wolf. _ (Disney made a movie about it) He found that the wolf survived mainly on MICE. Read that again, I said MICE. The only caribou that the wolves could catch were sick or old. In the 3 years he was there he saw a total of 6 caribou killed by the wolf pack he followed. NO ONE can tell me that wolves have anything but a positive impact on elk, moose, caribou, and deer herds. It should also be noted that in recorded cycles of rabbit populations every 6 to 7 years there is a population explosion and the wolf population rises and falls with the rabbit population. That tells me that wolves in the lower 48 eat mostly rabbits.

As for follow the money. Michigan is currently seeing a resurgence of panthers. There have been 20 sightings and one death last year. The DNR denies that they exist in the state and called the one carcass found a loose pet. They didn’t even examine the animal much less try to find an “owner”. It is illegal to have one as a pet here. Park workers in certain parks tell you to watch out for them stalking you, still officially they don’t exist. Why do you ask? Because if they admitted they were here then they would have to spend money to manage them.

Wow I’m done ranting for now.

This isn't new. Idaho and Wyoming are in this with Alaska. As a matter of fact Alaska is already allowing arial gunning of wolves. The government is trying to prematurely take the off of the Endangered Species List. It's atrocious.

These people don't get it, and they don't care. It's a very sad state, I mean, a truly sad situation. These animals have been maligned for hundreds and hundreds of years. They've been hunted to the brink of extinction, and now when there are people who care, the use of crass propaganda is passed through the wires, by @#$holes who want to hunt for sport, for Goddess' sakes.

Humanity for some unknown (but ridiculous, I'm sure) reason has been trying to steal the voice of Nature, but She will speak, and there's not an "End Times," story that can compare. (Sorry, this pisses me off) .

HOWEVER, you can help. I've actually been following this closely and lending support to Defenders of the Wildlife.org. What else can we do at this point. Get the word out. If more people realize this crap is taking place, more people will step up to stop it.

So...He's A Fan Of Elk Wasting Disease? Jan 14th. at 12:55:00 pm EST

Lora (Leominster, Massachusetts) - Email Me

In states where deer and elk are allowed to proliferate without being checked year-round by large predators (and human hunters barley make a dent in the deer populations, most years, even when they bag their limit) , Elk Wasting Disease manages to kill off entire herds--damaging the deer/elk population far more than any wolf could ever hope to achieve. Just ask Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Illinois, Utah, New York, West Virginia and Kansas.

Oh, did I mention that Elk Wasting Disease is a relative of Mad Cow Disease, and is potentially transmissible to humans? Also that it's a horrible way to die in agonizing pain over several months? Yeah, I don't think you want that sort of thing in your backyard. I know I don't.

There aren't any wolves in Massachusetts, other than the ones in zoos. Instead, we have coyotes, who have jumped into the deer-chomping gap left when the wolves were killed/driven out. Believe me, it is *not* a good trade--wolves will stay reasonably far from humans, and don't bother the suburbs at all, but coyotes will eat your outdoor cats and maul your pet chihuahua in a heartbeat. They are NOT any fun to chase out of your garbage bins, and they are not particularly afraid of people, even those bearing large blunt weapons and shouting.

All animal populations have optimal density ranges, where they are healthy and are not so overpopulated that diseases are easy to spread. Without large predators to keep those populations in equilibrium year-round, the populations will overgrow and begin to transmit diseases. Ruminants (deer, cows, etc.) are notorious for being a source of zoonoses, i.e., pathogens that are transmissible to humans. It is in out direct interest to ensure that they are kept at a reasonable herd density. Hunters and game commissions, who manage game populations at high densities to ensure that there will be sufficient animals for hunters to find and kill easily, do not manage the population for pathogen minimalization; they merely track the spread of sick animals and provide notification to CDC when they find one. It is not in their financial interest to manage a small, less-dense population, because then they sell fewer deer tags and fewer licenses.

.... taking a page from George Carlin here.... we should round up all the idiots in this country, all the rapists and murderers and whackos, and fenc them up in their own little area in the wilderness. Then slap the area with the label of "National Forest" and throw Otter and all the hunters of Idaho or wherever the hell they are in there with just knives, no guns. That'd make a great reality tv show, eh?

Oh, They'll only be hunted to near extinction rather than total extinction? The man's all heart. Not!
My hope for him is that on his first hunt a virulently rabid wolf bites him on the but-tocks. Maybe then he'll have to step down because of those embarassing changes that show up every full moon.
May the Spirit of the Wolf lift it's back leg in salute to this idiot.

What in hell is his idiot think of or is he even thinking?

Oh my mistake he's thinking about his pocket book and not the benefit the wolves can supply to the state.

Even if the state agrees with the hunting of wolves the call for a massacre of these beautiful creatures are uncalled for.
