Four Arrested In Arson At School In Coeur D'Alene

Author: Associated Press Source: KNDO

Title: FOUR ARRESTED IN ARSON AT SCHOOL IN COEUR D'ALENE
Police say 1 of the four people accused of setting fire to the Seventh-day Adventist Church school in Coeur d'Alene describes himself as a Satan worshipper.
Police say 20-year-old Jason Howry of Rathdrum, the self-described Satan worshipper, poured gasoline through a broken library window and 16-year-old Jacqueline Smith, who says she practices the Wiccan religion, set it on fire.

We're interesting.
People don't know a lot about pagans. Witches are unusual for most folk, and it gets readers. Black magic and mystic circles intrigue, and that's what the media is about.
I can't really blame them for sensationalizing from a practical level. As a Journalist it irks me to see sensationalism in the media, but, hey, it sells, and the media is ultimately a business.
These stories do very little to discredit Wiccans...certainly no more than a number of the more vocal Wiccans do.

...when one sees something akin to the following.
"Dave, 14, who describes himself as a Baptist, and Sue, 15, who says she practices the Christian religion, were arrested for trying to burn down a school..."
Disgusting sensationalist reporting.

They were clearly not Satanist or Wiccan but two juveniles with one large chip on their shoulders.
Since the Wiccan Rede states 'And harm it none, do as ye will' then it is obviously that the girl involved here needs to re-check her facts and the police shouldn't jump to conclusions.
They did it for attention or to get rid of anger (or they were drunk) rather than out of any religious reason.

They kids themselves may have owned up to the religions they said they followed or they wer coached by certain authorities to say that. Still, the religions did not do this- the kids did. Bringing any religion into this only detracts from the crime and adds little to the investigation but sensationalism. After all- no xtian kid would dare think about doing something like that now-would they? Unless of course- the Devil made them do it! That poor excuse has been around so long-its older than Methuselah- and just as lame.

The media doesn't have a bias against us. There is no master plan to discredit Wiccans, Pagans and/or Heathens. The media has a simple rule, "if it bleeds, it leads." They put out what the public wants to read, listen, and see. It is as simple as that. That is why important (but dull) news about politics and laws is lucky to make it into the public eye, while idiotic, salacious gossip about Paris Hilton or the death of Anna Nicole Smith can dominate the news for weeks on end. It is pointless to complain about it. It is moronic to imagine conspiracy behind it.
Wiccans, Pagans, and/or Heathens are a distinct minority. We are exotic. We are, to many of them, "naughty." That means we will always be part of any media story if there is a link, however weak or strong. That should not surprise you. It is one of the reasons being in the limelight (rather than the shadows) has its drawbacks. There is also this notion that people don't mention the faiths of mainstream faiths (Christians) when they are involved in crimes. I don't know what media you are reading/listening/watching but I see that mentioned all the time when it is somehow connected to the crime (as it is in this story) .
I get so sick of listening to our so-called community spin conspiracy theories, play the martyr, and whine that I literally am embarrassed. Why is it the response to such articles is never that we need to find a way to police ourselves better? There is never any attempt to take responsibility or seek to prevent another event. It is always a pass the buck, either by screaming that person (s) isn't one of us, or it is all lies to start with. While I've no doubt this is true in some cases, I find it unlikely it is true in all cases.

Ain't that part of Idaho just jam packed with a multitude of various radical Mormon sects? Another tinder-box authorities may feel need to be avoided by any kind of sparkage?

That should read "My guess is that the reason the religious preference (and names) of the other two individuals involved [is not being released] is that they are not being tried as adults and thus have a bit of privacy regarding the details of their case. Maybe a conspiracy...but maybe just the confines of journalism."
Mea culpa.

Per the article we've got one satanist who might have burnt the church as some kind of religious statement. One wiccan who certainly did not burn the church as a religious statement. And two others who helped burn the church but have no religous background at all - to me that means they were christians of some non-seventh day adventist sect. Looks a lot like four arsonists who burned the church because they wanted to.
The addition of the religious description of the 2 non- christian people involved in this crime was purely for the sensationalism. It serves no purpose as burning churches is not an active part of any religion that I know of so I could not have been relevant in that way even if all 4 of the arsonists had been of the same religion. It is really hard to say something is done for religious reasons if no 2 of the people are of the same religion. I presume they think that satanist and wiccans are of the same faith - but we know different.

. . .simple rebellious behavior, such as can be found in the Norwegian chruch burnings. What I've always found interesting are the young people who completely disbelieve in God, yet say they follow some Judeo-Christian boogyman.

I would love to see a similar article about arson that reads: "So and so, a Christian, set fire to some building." Why is the religion of those OUTSIDE Christianity so newsworthy but Christians, even when their crimes are religiously motivated, don't have their beliefs in the news?
Maybe the kids are Wiccan and Satanist. Who knows. I'm sure there's lots of really stupid teenagers out there that are just as sincere about their religious beliefs. After all, they may not have committed the crime just to be anti-Christian. It may have just been a really stupid prank.

When will we get to start hearing about all the self proclaimed christians who get arrested? I can garantee that there are alot more christians in hand cuffs than there are pagans. that is simply due to per capita and population density, there is more of them so therefore they have more criminals. The other two involved in this, were they non-pagans therefore their religion did not need to be mentioned? So if a christian kid gets in trouble they made a mistake, if a Pagan kid gets in trouble it is because they are evil?!!?

Riding A Pale Horse (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) - Email Me

these kids are just a couple of "playgans" who wanted to impress thier peers. It's easy to say you're a Satanist or a Wiccan, just as it's easy to say you're a Christian.
And I've included a link to the hometown paper where this happened, it has a little better reporting on it.
