Indiana Public Schools Shy Away From Religion Courses

Author: The Associated Press   Source: The Freedom Forum

Title: INDIANA PUBLIC SCHOOLS SHY AWAY FROM RELIGION COURSES

Perhaps wary of church-state controversies, most public schools in Indiana do not offer courses in religion — even though the law allows it.

"Some say, 'How can you teach the Bible and not teach religion?' My answer is always: 'Very carefully,'" said Ken Knowles, who teaches biblical literature at Carmel High School.

Biblical literature and religion are currently the only two religion courses offered in Indiana public schools. The literature class is more popular, but Carmel is one of only 16 schools that offer it. About 500 students around the state take the course.

Supporters of religion courses say failing to teach students about religion lessens their understanding of the world.

I agree. Schools are often afraid that teaching about a religion is the same as trying to convert people to it. I think it would be interesting for schools to hold classes teaching about various religions. It would indeed help to lessen miseducation and ignorance of other faiths and spiritualities. At the same time, though, there is one factor that can always get in the way: Will there be enough students willing to take the course? In high schools this is an issue that can completely kill a course.

The Indiana public schools aren't the only ones falling into this trap. But it is becoming more and more common.

Since there have been so many religious liberty and religious discrimination cases before the courts lately, it seems like a lot of people are afraid to even utter the word "religion." This is really too bad...studying different religions is truly a fascinating thing to do, and it only would help to lessen the fear and loathing that some people feel towards those who believe differently.

Ultimately, this is another problem caused by some of the conservative Christians. When it is necessary to file lawsuit after lawsuit to get Christianity out of government, and there's no one pointing out the difference between promoting Christianity and teaching ABOUT Christianity, the schools just get scared that they'll be the next ones ont he defendant's stand.
