Don't Be Scared Of Wiccans, Christians Are Told

Author: Tracy Moss Source: News-Gazette (IL)

Title: DON'T BE SCARED OF WICCANS, CHRISTIANS ARE TOLD
Christians and Wiccans gathered in the former Rossville-Alvin High School gymnasium Wednesday night to hear a Lincoln Christian College professor talk about the Wicca religion.
"Our battle is not with people," said Robert Kurka, professor of theology and church in culture at Lincoln Christian College in Lincoln. "We are talking about competing belief systems, not competing people."
Rossville-area churches invited Kurka to speak Wednesday night to learn more about the Wiccans, since a Wicca school moved earlier this year from Hoopeston to downtown Rossville.

Their battle may not be with people, but it is with people that they fight. Sometimes a fight between ideologies can be a messy business. And there are still some that like to win at all costs.

Since none of the Wiccans that attended the lecture were offended I'm assuming that, for the most part, the lecture was rather positive.
At the same time all three of the Wiccans didn't agree with the "interpretation" of Wicca. Since I wasn't there and the article doesn't state what part of the interpretation the Wiccans had issues with, I'll reframe from speculating. But I also reserve the right to be suspicious of the underlying message of this lecture.
And I agree with many of the other people that have commented on this article thus far. Their gonna continue to evangelize because it's what they do. I can't tell you how many times on my way to work I have to fend off Jehovah Witnesses'.
While I'm hopful of this first step, I also have to agree that when the first Christian-raised child in that town decides to check out Wicca it's possible that the @#$% is gonna hit the fan. As the man holding the lecture stated the two religions are basically competing for one another. Yeah we may not evangelize but we certainly aren't mum about our religion when people ask about it. If you take this idea and factor in a fire-brand preacher moving into the area it has disaster written all over it.
Still, a good first step. I wonder how the community would be able to handle other polytheistic religions entering the area like Asatru.

Of course it's an attempt to help 'the faithful' evangelize more effectively. It may or may not be a correct understanding of the Great Commission, but that is what Christians *do*.
They do what they do, we do what we do. And often the two shall meet.
I too would like to see the atmosphere of competition dissipate-- it would, I think, create a more spiritually constructive environment across the board.
But that's probably not going to happen. Competitiveness is innate to a lot of people; the claim to have a corner on correct belief is innate to a lot of religions.
Maybe someday that will decline, but that day is not today. Tomorrow isn't looking good; neither is next decade.
As long as that's the way it's going to be, I'll take an approach with respect for each other as fellow human beings, and sans hysteria.
A single step...

...and I obviously wasn't there for the presentation, and I hope that the tone of it really was just to treat Wiccans as people and not to be frightened of them. However, I just have a sneaking suspicion that they kinda hope that by dispelling alot of the fear-factor away from Wiccans, and by telling people to get more familiar with their Bibles so that they can engage in discussions with Wicca about their own faith, is just trying to get people to be ready to evangelize more effectively.
I also could do without the "competing faiths" statement. Why do faiths have to compete? Why can't they just co-exist as different paths to the same Source? Competition insinuates that we're all trying to outdo one another and are vying for supremecy.
Again, maybe I'm just too cynical.

I think it is great that this was a good educational welcome the Witches talk, but I think it would have been better to at least have 1 Wiccan speak as well. I know that a good Christian Minister telling them that Wiccans are not evil and not to be afraid of them has more impact than if one of US said the same thing, but letting one of the Wiccans have the floor would in this meeting would have showed even more support and allowed them to correct/clarify any misinformation.
I used to live near Rossville and it is a very pretty very small town with a very friendly population.
Blessed Be, Zianna

"Treating Wiccans as people"...wow, what a concept!
Acting upon the teachings of Christ....now THAT is a real Christian. :-) Nice to know there are such in the world.
Maybe Rossville can serve as an example of how Christians and Wiccans can live together in peace. I hope so!

If some of their children should become seriously interested in a non Christian faith, then you know what is going to hit the fan. Fundies will never accept the free choices of other people because their scripture.calls every religion but theirs false.
