Ready For Spring?

Author: Sarah Sutschek   Source: Northwest Herald (IL)

Title: READY FOR SPRING?

Paul Hamill said his grade school teachers were wrong when they had students try to balance an egg on the vernal equinox.

“There’s nothing magic about balancing eggs on the first day of spring,” he said. “There’s no major planetary alignment. You can make eggs balance by allowing an egg to become room temperature.”

Two days a year, there are 12 hours of day, and 12 hours of night. The vernal equinox, which marks the first day of spring, is March 20, said Hamill, an astronomy and meteorology professor at McHenry County College.

For members of many pagan religions, the vernal equinox has spiritual meaning and is celebrated as Ostara.

Spring Is Sprung.... Mar 23rd. at 10:35:32 am EDT

Yes, I'm ready for spring. I've been ready since last fall. I'm ready to stop shoveling snow and doing the Penguin walk.
And as for eggs, I prefer to leave the balancing act for others. I'd rather just eat them.
I like the chocolate ones the best.

Of Course You Can Do This! Mar 23rd. at 9:14:59 am EDT

Just poke the egg in some mashed potatoes and presto.... it stands... by the way, this can be done any day of the year, just don't let your mother see you playing with your food!

As far as the connection between egg balancing and Ostara goes, the Spring Equinox is pretty much all there is to it. The egg, symbolic of fertility and rebirth (i.e. Spring) is balanced on end in celebration and recognition of the balance between day and night that occurs on the Equinox. Simple and eloquent symbolism that anyone can participate in, pagan or not. Lovely.
I'd never really considered it before, but this kind of makes me wonder if any traditions out there have a similarly simple balancing ritual for the Fall Equinox. Most Fall Equinox rites I have attended (or led) focus on the theme of balance in some way, but I am not aware of anything as straightforward as standing an egg on end as a symbolic act to encapsulate the whole Sabbat. Hmm... now I have to figure one out before Fall.
Darn it. I hate it when Witchvox articles make me think.

What??... Mar 20th. at 11:20:44 pm EDT

The article starts with how balancing an egg can be done any day of the year -- then, without any pre-amble or segue at all, turns into a "Human Interest" story on Ostara.

I'm confused. What, exactly, is the connection between balancing eggs and Ostara? Other than Ostara being celebrated at the Vernal (Spring) Equinox? I was expecting more on the science of balancing eggs...............

You can balance an egg any day of the year, but it has nothing to do with the yoke. Eggs actually have a rough exterior and you can balance them on points like a mini tripod.

The smoother the egg the harder it is to balance. Organic eggs work the best.
