Appeals Court Upholds Couple's Conviction For Disrupting Hunt

Author: The Associated Press Source: First Amendment Center

Title: APPEALS COURT UPHOLDS COUPLE'S CONVICTION FOR DISRUPTING HUNT
The Indiana Court of Appeals has upheld a northern Indiana couple's convictions for disrupting a 2001 deer hunt by driving down a road and honking their car's horn.
In its ruling Shuger v. Indiana Jan. 17 against Frederick and Rosanne Shuger, the court found Indiana's hunter-protection law is constitutional because it regulates only the place and manner of speech.

So the big, bad hunter-lobby has won another one, oh-me-oh-my!
Oh, give me a friggin' break. If it weren't for thwe hunters, there would be a lot more dead animals on the side of the road, and i'm not talkin' about Rocket J. Squirrel. Face it: It is the Hunters who keep the deer population down these days, not "natural predators". Those people I know - and those I am related to - who go hunting do so because they do not have enough money to go buy their ambulatory protein. Oh, sure, they can just become strict vegetarians, but why should they if they do not want to?
And those who complain the most about how "Bambi" is bering "murdered" should make sure they are not using, eating or wearing ANY animal product at all -- including belts, jackets and shoes. And stay away from the Jello (tm) , too: that "gelatin" is really made from beef fat.

...should rightly be calling for more hunting of deer.
Most deer populations are out of control, far too large for the areas in which they live. The problem with that is overgrazing of the plants the deer love best--plants going extinct in those specific environments. That creates problems for other species of animals that depend on that ecosystem.
So, too many deer leads to loss of plant diversity and that affects other animal species and the degradation of the ecosystem. Anybody truly desiring a healthy ecosystem should then advocate for protecting it by eliminating the excess deer populations--and our current hunting season limits haven't been keeping up.
Disrupting or protesting hunts shows a lack of knowledge about deer populations and the effects they have on the environment. If we're going to take the place of natural predators--a decision we made long ago when we decided we didn't want to live around wolves and great cats--then we have to do the job right and keep the deer populations in line.

I have never hunted, shoot, I don't even kill the bugs in the house... keep them out by spraying the doorways and such but I come from a family of hunters. My father, who was native american in heritage, hunted and taught my brother and nephew to do the same. As a child, we ate everything that was hunted, killed and brought home.
My father believed that if you killed it you should need it for food. And as a child, we did. He used every part of that animal for something, feeding us or the dogs on the farm, nothing went to waste. I support hunting for food but as far as the sports hunters that only hunt for racks, that should be outlawed.
Disrupting a hunt is unacceptable, deer population needs to be controlled and that is what the hunting season is for. I love the sight of deer grazing, they are beautiful creatures but if they over populate it can cause problems for other wildlife as well as people.

Although I have not hunted, I do know people who do. And most are fairly responsible hunters who have licences and obey the state and local ordinances when hunting. We have a lot of deer in this state, and many have even moved into the city where -on occasion they have become a danger to traffic. (I know, I nearly met a few on the road almost by accident) And I have seen the remains of road killed deer on my way to and from work. And this isn't the same thing as hunting a species to near extinction- and I protest that too. Since we have no wolves in this state, hunting has been used to cut the population over time. And the hunters I know eat what they kill. Granted there are always a few jerks out there- but protesting a hunt in such a way helps no one. The protestor gets ignored at best, arrested at worst, and dismissed as a tree hugging idiot- which doesn't help the rest of the community. Protecting a species is more that seeing it survive extinction by human means-sometimes it must be kept from overpopulating into extinction as well. And since humans have seen to removing the predators whose job it was- we have that task ourselves.

This was not peaceful protesting but disturbing the peace. They only took an understandable law and expanded it because of jerks like that. In all states it is a misdemeanor that you are so loud and noisy that is disturs your neighbors, like those Jerks who play their rap (NOT MUSIC) so loud you can here it three miles away with their window closed, and yours closed also.

You should also be against the law that makes harassing clients at abortion clinics a crime. In principle it's exactly the same, protecting people engaged in legal activity from harassment while engaged in that activity. If you like the one you have to accept the other.

Place and Manner of Speech could interfere with address of a particular market. In this case, the appellants had sought to provide warning to trespassing venison, and should have been tried as Accessory.

So they were a couple of self-righteous people who would rather see deer starve to death in the cold of winter than have human management of the population.
