Man Sues Over 'In God We Trust' Plates

Author: UPI Source: Washington Times

Title: MAN SUES OVER 'IN GOD WE TRUST' PLATES
An Indiana man and the American Civil Liberties Union are suing over a free state license plate that says "In God We Trust."
Mark Studler told the Indianapolis Star he isn't opposed to the plates but he thinks they should cost $15 like other specialty plates. Studler paid $40 for his "environment" license plates, $15 of which goes to the state as an administrative fee and $25 toward land conservation.

If I had to buy plates that bore that statement, a hammer and a chisel would be my first choice to pound it out --- or a magic marker to put on the word--NOT! After the phrase. Just because I would have to buy the plate doesn't mean I endorse the statement. I'm glad the state hasn't made it mandatory. But I would also resent the fact that it is given free, while all other things must be paid for. Which means that the state is endorsing one religion over others. I find it ridiculous to host that statement on everything when it's already on the money. I too -prefer E Pluribus Unum.

"We mention God in the Declaration of Independence and in many of our founding documents and so I think it's very appropriate and legitimate to encourage the dissemination of this phrase," Smith told the newspaper.
No, God is NOT mentioned in the Declaration of Independance. At least not their God. It says Nature's God. And that is only in saying that all have the same rights because of said God. Obviously NOT the Christian God who excludes all who do not follow.
Most importantly, God is NEVER mentioned in the Constitution. And, really, how much more founding can any document be? Grrr...
Okay, that's all. ^__^ Brightest blessings.

When these plates became available someone had the common sense to set into policy that the clerks at the BMV not be allowed to "push" this plate.
Those who don't request it, get a plate with the state symbol a torch surrounded by stars. I do think the admin fee should apply though. When the suit is settled and the fee is added, no doubt that we will see many more cars sporting the state symbol. Most will choose to keep the $15 in their pocket.

I hope the guy wins because I do not think it's right for the BMV to force people to have such a license plate on their car to begin with. I am a Wiccan and I don't believe in the Christian God. Therefore, I deeply resent the state of Indiana forcing me to have to have this plate on my car! It should be a specialty license plate or there should be another option available to those like myself who do not want to advertise "In God We Trust" on their car. Luckily, I still have one year left to use my current license plate. Hopefully, when I have to renew my plates again, I will be able to have a choice! Probably not, though! The Christians pretty much dominate here in Indiana.

Well to be honest the reasoning the other guy used was well a death nail.
on the issue of having "in god we trust" on our legal tender.
Well the reason it was added was due to the Civil war. So it was to bring people together. The first coin to use it was the 2 cent piece on the 1864 coin
The Motto was first sanction in 1956.
Can anyone see a parallel with this stuff. Nation gets into trouble turns to bring people together as one.. and bam thats what you get.
It has NEVER been constituional. It has only been used to bring people together.. Which its not doing anymore anyways. It has never been chalenged.
What will happen is this lawsuit will be successful. Which will provide precedent (excust the spelling) for other simular things.. such as the currency having it.
I completely agree with this argument. It is bloody annoying and it does breach the seperation of church and state (which was the WHOLE point in the founders to establish this nation)

Christians are absolutly against the first amendment when it gets in the way of their book-of-lies being forced onto our children in schools and used to make policies against the non-christian Americans.
BUT, they are all for it when it comes to keeping their churches tax-free.
I propose a bill that states "All Christian churches are to be excluded from claiming a tax exempt status until they learn to keep their book at home (in the bathroom) where it belongs."
If the christian churches had to pay taxes on those collection plates, you'll see a lot less bibles going to the starving children in Africa, and a lot more food.
And Pat Robertson would go to jail for tax evasion from his child-labor law breaking, Blood Diamond mines in third world countries. His farce of a law school would go under as well, making the American judicial system a better place.
Since I'm on the topic, It really P***** me off when I see a christian church with a sign "$3,000,000 fundraiser to renovate our Lady Of Peace!" That's enough money to provide healthcare to a good chunk of the sick/elderly. Or how about helping out the soldiers who are coming back with bad injuries only to find that their healthcare has been cut and they don't qualify for disability. Those guys can really use that $3M. Instead they waste it on lavish mansions no one lives in, just to fatten the collection plate.

I wonder just how far these people think God trusts Indiana? I'll have to ask Her, next time we gather.
So, they feel the State should be disseminating Guidion's Bibles, at public expense? I'd rather praise the Guidions, for accepting that expense, than commiserate with someone who's had the money stolen.
However, to take a tolerant view, if Congress wants that slogan on our money, and Indiana wants that slogan disseminated by Convicts, I will accept this as an invideous comparison to the governments involved.

Greenman (Columbus, Indiana) - Email Me - Web

I live in Indiana, and I have to tell you that these new license plates are EVERWHERE because they are free. It is clearly the supporting of one religious belief over others. It's actually very annoying.
The original motto of the USA is "E Plurabis Unim", which means "out of many, One". I believe we need to put that on the plates because we are a nation of many religious beliefs and non-religious philosophies.
If you want to promote your own religion, I say, get a bumpersticker, or at least pay a fee for your special message on the plate. To make it free is to endorse monotheism-- which a lot of people believe, but not everyone, including many Pagans.
It's caused me to put on a couple bumperstickers that say: "Coexist" (spelled with symbols of different religions) and "Freedom of Religion means ANY religion".
I am putting a link to the IndyStar newspaper's coverage so you can read more about it. Post a comment there if you wish.
blessed be,

When will our government as well as many other people understand the only way to be fair when it comes to the government having anything to do with religion is all or none. You cannot pick and choose and be fair. Either the government should treat all religions equally or the government should not have anything to do with religion whatsover, which would really be the safest way to go about it.
