If you're looking to adopt a black cat this month, you might be out of luck. That's because this can be an unlucky time of year to be a black cat and in response, a lot of humane societies and adoption facilities won't allow them to be adopted around Halloween.
There are two main reasons for this. Black cats can be the target of pranksters and other mischief this time of year, according to the Humane Society of the United States Web site, www.hsus.org. The site also warns that people who have black cats should be extra careful about keeping their cats safe during this time. Another reason is because people might adopt black cats to be a "living decoration" at Halloween parties.

My Felix disappeared during October a few years ago, none of my other cats ever went missing. So I believe he was taken by crazies. If he could have, he would have come home.

I am all in favor of having a temporary ban on adoption of black cats - especially kittens - at halloween. Just like I would like to see a ban on bunnies and chicks at easter - stupid people buy them as "special" gifts for children who don't really want them and don't take care of them after they get them. The batch of kitties ruling my house does not currently have any black members - this is the first time in my life that none of my cats are black - love the little patches of darkness - I've never had a white one though - wonder why? Maybe I'm afraid of snow?
