Satanist Father And Christian Mother Fight For Sunday Morning Custody Rights

Author: Tom Leonard   Source: The Telegraph (UK)

Title: SATANIST FATHER AND CHRISTIAN MOTHER FIGHT FOR SUNDAY MORNING CUSTODY RIGHTS

A custody battle between a Satanist and his Christian ex-wife has raised constitutional issues after both demanded the right to share their religion with their three young children.

Kristie Meyer has cited the religious beliefs of her former husband, Jamie, as the main reason why an Indiana judge should restrict his visitation rights.

She wants the three to go to church on Sunday mornings - technically, when they are with Mr Meyer - but points out they are unlikely to do so if they are with their father, a member of an organisation calling itself the Church of Satan.

However, legal experts have warned that the American Constitution prevents judges from showing a religious preference.

Social Darwinism & Satanists Jul 14th. at 7:53:12 pm EDT

Finn (San Marcos, Texas) - Email Me

It is important to understand that there are almost as many stripes of Satanism as there are Wicca. There are Satanists who do believe in the Devil, Black Mass, worship, sacrifice, flinging feces, the whole ball of wax. The most numerous (and press friendly) Satanists belong to the Church founded by Anton LeVay. I have done my homework.

Satanists are social darwinists. That says it all. Contrary to all this more politically correct tripe we hear these days, Satanists have a credo that would make most Wiccans and Neo-Pagans flinch. They do indeed have an ethical framework but said framework is that it is a dog-eat-dog world. Your job is to be the biggest dog. I won't get into an argument about what they have said about children and animals. I merely suggest people read the Satanic Bible for themselves. It suffices to say that I do not see them as kindred spirits in any way.

The man in question here was not given custody of the children for a reason. As some have pointed out in follow up information he has some bad parenting issues. His faith (more of a philosophy in fact if you have read the Satanic Bible you will know what I'm talking about) has nothing to do with anything.

Goddess Help The Children Jul 13th. at 6:23:45 pm EDT

Whispering Breeze (Camby, Indiana) - Email Me

I've linked another article on this story from a newspaper a bit closer and with a few more details.

I might have more sympathy for this Dad if he respected his childrens rights in the manner he wants his respected. It seems that he has an older daughter (different Mom) whom he has alienated because she chose christianity over his belief system.

He also might want to think about getting his child support current if he wants to continue his belief in fulfilling his worldly desires. I hear that being in jail is not the best place to try to follow that path

I have a hard time believing he's trying to accomplish anything other than (self censored discriptive word ) with his ex.

Has Anyone Asked The Kids? Jul 13th. at 11:14:54 am EDT

Errapel (Lowestoft, England) - Email Me

I don't think the article said how old the kids where (unless I'm really unobservant) but if they're old enough to decide they should at least be asked what they'd prefer. Perhaps the judge should sit down and ASK the kids what they'd prefer to do, then try and work out some way to accomidate it.

If they simply MUST be taken to church on Sunday then why not switch times around so they're with their mum that day. But most churchs offer weekday services, couldn't they be taken to one of them?

Sadly I think neither parent is really thinking about what's best for their kids.

Escape From Faux Xtian Pathology Jul 13th. at 9:28:27 am EDT

Terry (Irvington, Virginia) - Email Me

While this article says nearly nothing about the father's actual religious practices or interactions with his kids, nor the mother's, as would be needed for a realistic court decision, to the extent the mother's lawyer's warped representations might represent the mother and her attitudes, the kids would benefit from all the chances the father might offer to see other world views besides her probable pathology.

What a shame I am not a judge, heh. My religious views are quite dissimilar to those of both the mother and the father. I view both parents as being equally full of sh*t, and would therefore favor neither. :P

I'm sure everyone on this board knows this, but a good book to have in your library is "Pagans and the Law" by Dana Eilers.

That she married him and had kids in order to change and convert him, only to discover later on that it ain't going to happen. Now she has the kids in the middle of a debate and a divorce citing -his-religious beliefs as the cause of their problems.
Judges do get involved in these battles often siding with those whose beliefs echo their own, so they are not completely unbiased. If Mr. Meyer has custody on Sundays then he should be the one to determine what to do on those days. She should choose another time to go to church. If she's not budging, then it's really not the kids she's thinking of, but herself.
There is no reason the kids cannot share in the beliefs of both if taught properly, but this doesn't appear that it will be the case.
Sadly, for Mr. Meyer, I look for him to lose the case, but the kids will end up being the big losers in any case.

How In The World.... Jul 12th. at 1:49:50 pm EDT

Sprites (Houston, Texas) - Email Me

did this couple get married in the first place? I am assuming that one or the other converted to their religion of choice after the wedding, but don't you think they should have discussed core values BEFORE the engagement?...before children came along? I think a divorce in this case was inevitable. As for the daughter being embarrassed by her father's religion, it doesn't take much to embarrass teenagers. My parents simply had to be seen in public to embarrass me.

Child Or A Divorce Jul 12th. at 1:30:49 pm EDT

Avis Pagana (Troy, Georgia) - Email Me

As a child of a divorce I can say that my parents getting the divorce was the best thing that happened to me, not because either parent was abusive, but because I got to live in a house free of tension and hate, and am closer to each parent as a result.

But this is only because the divorce was nice. My parents did not wait until they could no longer stand to see each other to get it, but rather got it as soon as they saw they could not work things out. As a result they were able to remain civil and did not rely on the courts to sort out.

I wish the family here could do the same, but my guess is that the marriage went on too long and got to nasty for a happy settlement. The mother seems to be forcing this move out of spite for the father since most churches offer Wednesday services, so the she could still take her children to church without taking away the valuable time that the father has with the kids. However if the children really want to go to church on Sunday, the father should allow them to do so, without a court order.

Divorce And Custody Battles Are ... Jul 12th. at 12:15:08 pm EDT

for the adults and have nothing to do with the interests of the child ... unless there is severe abuse going on the adults should just suck it up and stay married for the benefit of the kids.

Children don't know if Mommy and Daddy are unhappy, and they really don't care. All they care is that they are together ...

Making children be in the middle of such a hateful dispute is childish on the parents part ... grow up and stop being so bloody selfish!

Putting Aside Of The Mans Religion. Jul 12th. at 9:41:56 am EDT

Dennis Deal (Nazareth, Pennsylvania) - Email Me

Its still the old fight that goes on in almost every divorce and custody battles. Both side trying to appear the better parent. Both trying to paint the other as the bad parent in court.

Dollars to donuts before the split they both had an agreement that the children would be exposed to both beliefs. Now the split has happened.

Mom suddenly realizes wait he is a FREAKIN satanist. He is an unfit parent. See I take MY children to a CHRISTIAN church.

The other parent Now demands that he has the children on his weekends to take to HIS church cause SHE is the UNFIT parent.

Custody battles are never pretty. The fight over the children is almost always not about the children. Custody battles are in the end the worse part of any divorce. Its never really about the child, but about getting back at the other parent.

The children are the ones that suffer and must, most of the time, figure out a way to survive and continue on in spite of how stupid or immature the parents are acting.

Have We Got The Whole Story? Jul 12th. at 2:12:11 am EDT

Katmandu (elba, Alabama) - Email Me

What other issues are going on here? What loving? and rational? parent would play tug-o'-war with their kids and with such an important issue? I could honestly see these kids being fubar-ly scarred for life. Each parent may think that she/he is doing what's best by not letting the other have any religious teaching upon the kids. But these kids are probably gonna have issues stemming from not only the divorce, but each parent telling them that the other is teaching them total BS.

Yeah, moving the visitation days may help some, but it isn't gonna solve the core problems here. Honestly, I feel that each side needs to grow up and consider their kids more. It isn't fun being the rope between two parents at war. I've read LeVay and his stuff isn't as objectionable as entertainment would have us think. Let both parents teach the kids and let the kids decide. Hey, maybe then the kids won't come out of all this as mindless zombies unable to think for themselves. My best wishes go out to the children here.
