Author: WISH Source: WISH (IN)

Title: POLICE: WOMAN STABS HERSELF WITH SWORD
Lebanon Police are investigating an incident in which a woman stabbed herself overnight at the Oak Hill cemetery.
Police say 36-year old Katherine Gunther ran a 36 inch sword completely through her foot. Gunther told police that she and several friends were in the cemetery in Lebanon just after midnight practicing a Wiccan ritual involving candles, incense and driving swords into the ground.

armand (shreveport, Indiana) - Email Me

I live in Indiana and have some friends that were just ready to come out of the broom closet.... and then this happens and drives them right back in. People here at my work were laughing about this and talking about it. I had a friend from kentucky call me and ask me about it because i had told her we do not do rituals in graveyards. So i had to explain to the best of my ability that different people do different things. I still want to know HOW you drive a sword thru your foot? Someone explain that please. I have been doing rituals for years and years and never once have i driven a sword into the earth, let alone my foot. (shakes head) .

When I read this article I wasn't the least bit surprised. This is the price Wiccans pay (and pretty much everyone under the Pagan-Umbrella) for a total lack of standards, oversight, or education. If you open the carnival to everyone, EVERYONE will show up. The most ironic thing is that these Wiccans in the graveyard are just as legitmate as anyone else. Many have made fun of them saying these are wannabes are don't know what they are talking about. They don't? Really? This kind of flies in the face of that whole eclectic vibe doesn't it?
If you found this article funny, sad, and embarassing... you better get used to it. This is only the beginning. I've seen sillier (and more self destructive) things all over the United States when it comes to Wiccans, witches, Pagans, and/or Heathens. Gimpy and her group in the graveyard are actually pretty tame. Everyone has shown up for the carnival. Like it or not, the press operates under the credo: "If it bleeds it leads." Without standards we have garnered every reject and con-artist you can name. The idiots make better press and hence it is the idiots who will define us to the world. We were better off in the shadows. I'll take quality over quantity anytime.

I didn't know thrusting a longsword into your foot was part of ritual now-a-days, appearently I didn't get the memo! What people will do for attention (SIGH... , shakes head) Brightest Blessings and may The Light protect thee! ^_^ Azuris-Raen

I read the "other" article that someone was kind enough to link to. At least the writer did some research and did't go off the deep end about witchcraft and satanism and such. It could have been so easy given the full moon, cemetary, and ritual bits. And the article was straight reporting, with nothing obviously judgemental.

I must insist that it requires some effort to stab one's foot with a sword.
I wonder why they were doinga ritual ina cemetery, and why they ere drunk? I hope the article adresses that these elements are unusual.

First off, I was not aware of any Wiccan ritual that had to take place at a graveyard at night . So obviously this person decided to create one or " borrowed" something like it.
Secondly you gotta be pretty darn drunk to stab your sword in your foot, for whatever reason you claim to jab the sword into the ground.
There are just some people who are too stupid, air-headed and just plain lacking on common sense walking around. Or in this case, limping around.
Well, maybe we're hearing of the Pagan version of Inspector Clue-- um-- less.
If she had her wand she would have poked herself in the eye, maybe?
She almost qualifies for a Darwin Award.

as to why the wine part of Wiccan ritual is traditionally near the end. Sounds like an interesting ceremony, but obviously one that requires care. Usually we just have to worry about fire safety from all the candles and so on (especially with long trailing robes) . Maybe we shouldn't laugh too loudly at this poor woman lest we suffer an unfortunate incident ourselves! I couldn't open the link either, so I have attempted to add an alternate link here; it's a very short article anyway. Careful out there!

Everytime I click the link I can't get to the article, I don't know if this is perminant and will check back later.
From what I read in the extract here, yeesh, idiots and those intoxicated (by anything) should not be allowed swords! They're sharp and pointy and they'll hurt if you use them wrong. I have no idea what kind of ritual they were planning, but anyone stupid enough to be in a dark cememtry at night, drunk and brandishig a sword deserves all they get. I'm just glad it was only herself that she hurt and not someone else.

Interesting, I just tried to read the full article and it seems to have been removed. So since I don't know what the whole article says, I'm going to hope it was just a case of "idiots attempting ritual". Accidents happen. Unfortunately some people don't think ahead to "this might be dangerous, and what if this may shed a bad light on the community?".

Christopher Blackwell (Deming, New Mexico) - Email Me

As a Wiccan of over twenty years of experience, just what were these people doing? Nothing I know about Wicca requires doing ceremony in a graveyard. Consider how people feel about cemeteries, it is rather foolish to be doing anything in them a night. There are far better places to do ceremony out of doors.
I really wish these wannabes would stop palming themselves off as one of us.
And for goddess sake one should be down right careful about using sharp swords around other people and should not be so loaded with alcohol as to mistake where you stick it. Swords are not supposed to be stuck in the ground, much less oneself. There is a reason why Wiccans use dull swords and athames, so they don't hurt themselves or each other.
So hopefully these people will read a bit more and plan a lot better before they pull another foolish stunt like this. Better yet get a hobby or something.

You, know, It's really amazing what you can do when you're drunk! Too bad most can't remember the next morning when they wake up and find the doctor trying to fit them for a prosthetic (whatever) . -Fill in missing appendage here. I guess its the medieval version of "shooting yourself in the foot." Different method, same result.
