Title: Fall into your rhythm

GEORGIA CENTER, Vt. — The cold front moved in last evening while we were on the Church Street walking mall in Burlington, half an hour south of here.

Until then it had been, for a Vermont October, warm and humid. Suddenly it felt as if someone had turned on the air conditioner.

Then the rains started. By the time we got back here to our cottage on Lake Champlain, the robust northeast wind was driving the rain almost sideways. And we were reminded of what winter is about — forces we can’t control and chill that touches our very marrow.

In nearly all religious traditions, adherents are encouraged to retreat, to breathe deeply, to give themselves time to think, to process what is happening to and through them.

For instance, in the fourth and fifth centuries, after the Emperor Constantine had made Christianity the preferred religion of the Roman Empire, Christian men who felt awkward with the faith’s newly privileged position began to retreat to the desert, especially in Egypt and other parts of northern Africa.
