Senator Wants To Block Assisted Suicide

Author: Matthew Daly, Associated Press Source: Lawrence Journal World (KS)

Title: SENATOR WANTS TO BLOCK ASSISTED SUICIDE
A Kansas senator wants to block Oregon’s landmark law allowing doctor-assisted suicide.
Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., has introduced legislation that would bar doctors from prescribing federally controlled drugs for use in assisted suicide.
Brownback’s bill, dubbed the Assisted Suicide Prevention Act, marks the first legislative assault on assisted suicide since the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Oregon’s law in January.
“When the law permits killing as a medical ‘treatment,’ society’s moral guidelines are blurred, and killing could gain acceptance as a solution for the chronically ill or vulnerable,” said Brownback, a favorite of religious conservatives who is considering a run for president.

The solution seems easy, don't you think? If these idiotic theocratic a$$holes don't want to allow people to die with dignity, then they should be responsible for all costs. If this federal government wants to "save" these lives well, then, fine, but they should be forced to pay for treatment, insurance, medication (especially pain medication) , housing, food, etc. If not, they're just hypocrites.
This reminds me of the local Catholic church near my home. They have these huge signs about how abortion is a sin and encourage their unmarried parisioners not to have an abortion. One woman that we knew believed this and didn't have an abortion. When she came back to the church during the annual Christmas toy drive to ask for a toy for her child, she was told to look somewhere else since God was punishing her for having a child out of wedlock. So, they forced her to have a child, then punish her for it. Seems like what's going on here.
Morals aren't the same for each person and many of us believe that quality of life is more important than length. Painful last days not only damage the soul that goes through them but the family members that must watch knowing they can't do a thing. It's sick to force everyone to go through that. How much do you want to bet that the people who want to pass this law are the first to dump their family members in nursing homes to come back for a funeral???

state should decide certain issues such as abortion but then gets mad (and reaches for the federal government) when another state wants to do something they disagree with. And they advocate personal freedom while getting in between a patient and his/her doctor. They yell for freedom of religion but only if you are christian. In my old home town the protestant christians even wanted to tell other protestant churches that they should change even the tiniest detail of belief to conform. Teach these people some logic!!

And he's a Dominionist at that.
He's repeatedly stated that America should be a Christian only country, run by Christian values.
And if he develops some painful, terminal illness, do you think HE would hang on past the time that pain medications stop working? He acts like a wimp, so I'm guessing not.

Let me correct one of Mr. Brown-stain's statement. It is not "killing as medical treatment". It is assistance as an act of mercy. Apparently, all of Jesus lessons on mercy and forgiveness were lost on the religio-facists on the right.
I can honestly say that I am now glad my grandmother died 2 years ago. I finally had to put her in palliative care, because the "religious" hospital would not stop treatment as she had requested both verbally, through me as her power of attorney, or in accordance with her advanced directive. As far as I am concerned, those people needlessly torchered an old woman for their insane ideology. The pain she was in the last days of her life is on their Karma.

I sincerely hope there is no one in your family who is terminally ill and longing to end it all. Because those that are have no choice except what the hospital can do for them (or to them) .After all, you will have no choices if it should be you or a family member. It would also mean an end to the living will and being allowed to choose NOT to have lifesaving procedures done to them. That too could also be construed as assisting a suicide by withholding procedures.

Get This ! It will never work. If any individual or group of them wishes to block an assistded susicide, they should be made to pay for the entire amount necessary to keep that person alive for however ling that person remains alive. Get this also, I do not support this idea because it is not consistant with individual rights. However, it does put the financial bourden on those persons and groups who would oppose this natural rignt. That is, tha right to employ a professional in despensing a quick and painless death to the person who wants one.

If these blockheads would actually do some research before they speak it would be better for all of us. The average person who contemplates suicide is not the person who has been given hope of recovery. These are the folks who are terminal and would rather spare themselves and their loved ones the misery of an ongoing deteriorating illness, not to mention the massive financial burden that serious illness brings with it. And let's face it, Congress is far more concerned about the pharmaceutical companies than they are about their constituents. I have to wonder if this piece of legislature is more about protecting these companies then it is about preserving human life. I say let these people die with dignity.
