The New Fred

Author: Justin Kendall, The Pitch Source: The Village Voice

Title: THE NEW FRED
A gold Chevy Trailblazer bearing two "Support Our Troops" magnets rolls past flag-waving bikers and roaring motorcycles. Then it motors past men and women carrying signs thanking God for dead American soldiers.
The SUV parks in the lot across from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Independence. As the Samoan family exits the vehicle, Shirley Phelps-Roper says, "Oh, I've got a customer here," then snaps into a loud song to the tune of "The Army Goes Rolling Along."
First to fight/For the fags/Now they're coming home in bags/And the army goes marching to hell.
Her voice is worthy of a church choir and carries across the lot.
The grieving family glares at Phelps-Roper with looks of hurt and disgust.
"Now, see, they'll never be able to take those words away," she brags.
Fred Phelps' daughter is right. Her words stick to the memory like bubblegum to a shoe.

I've seen some pretty wild scenes at gay pride parades. I'll bet the wild folks would enjoy being a bit extra wild just for their benefit. I'd get out a lawn chair and a bag of popcorn and m&m's, and enjoy that show.
BTW, cockroaches and dung beatles are *far* to high on the evolutionary scale for the likes of those. Surely we could come up with something ickier than that? I have too much respect for the Earth's recyclers and cleaner-uppers. They get such a bad rap...
On the other hand, I like my husband's theory on reincarnation, harming others, and Karma... if he's right, they will get to return as each and every person that they have caused harm and grief to so that they can experience it first hand.
Ok, I think I've become far too judgmental in my hormone-induced state.

Why would people spread this much hate? It's disgusting. If they're so Christian, why haven't they ever read the bible? What about all the "love thy neighbor" and "turn the other cheek" stuff? If we're going to hell, then so are they.

We could always use these idiots clearing out the front lines of mines in Iraq. At least there, they would serve a better use if they were forced to serve the army they so despise. After all, these jerks wouldn't hesitate to do that to us. To an Iraqi extremist, their politics wouldn't matter anyway.

In the picture there in the article I clearly see a sign that says "God Hates Fags".
That to me is hate mongering. Is that not against the law?
That is some crazy sh!t man. I am really glad that I dont have to deal with those aweful people. And I really hope that they are not allowed into Canada, there might be a riot!
Peace out stranger friends. Linda

. . .that much of the Phelps clan are disbarred attorneys, except for the daughter mentioned in the article, who consistently do their best to provoke others into action which could lead to lawsuits? i.e., they blow their noses on an American flag, a counter-protestor spits on a Phelps clan member, the Phelps clan sues and makes their money. For that is their primary purposes, to spread hate and sue others to keep their hate-filled church around.
I know, she was here in Lubbock back in August for the funeral of a second son of a local family who died in Iraq (as did his elder brother.) And we were warned what to expect from them, and to keep our own tempers in check.
Fight with knowledge, not in ignorance.

Cúglas Hiberniae (New Brunswick, New Jersey) - Email Me

While I do agree that free speech is a fundamental (no pun intended) part of the American government...picketing at funerals should be illegal. It shouldn't HAVE to be illegal, but with whackjobs like this running around, there should be a suspension of free speech around funerals. I love free speech, but when people abuse it for sick and twisted purposes, for the mental health and peace of the grieving it should be suspended.

Dangerous wackos, but wackos all the same. No one else would think that protesting at a funeral is a proper place to jump up in to a peoples faces.
But hey, they are exercising their constitutional rights. So says more than one court. Though at the same time the courts have agreed that they should keep to a distance.
I guess there must have been much wailing and gnashing of the teeth when the democrats took Congress.
If nothing else this bunch has staked out a niche. A niche that no one in their right minds would want to have in the first place.
Yes, funerals have been used as to advance political and sometimes religious agendas. But never that I can recall in such a mean spirited and crass way. I would use stronger language, but I am fairly confident that my comments would deleted were I to do so.
If you want to see American terrorists look no further than to those people in phelps church.

In my opinion these people are doing this solely for the publicity and to be able to create causes of action. Many members of the Phelps family and church are current or former attorneys and know the legal system. I joined the Patriot Guard, not as a response to the Phelps' actions, but because I wanted to show my respect for the men and women in the military willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country. I don't agree with this war and it's architects, but I support the troops and I think the Phelps actions are reprehesible.

Having seen these people first hand....not 20 feet across the street from me at a funeral....I can honestly say that, while I don't NORMALLY condone violence, I can certainly say that I completely understand why some people just fly off the handle and attack these folks.

is only the first word that comes to mind reading the vileness that seethes from that woman's mouth and taints the very air. One day the Wheel will turn and those she has harmed will get their chance to give her evil back to her where it deserves to be. I shudder to think of the way she is warping her children.

WRATH!!!!!!
Judge not unless ye be judged (botched quote) . I thought that this was one of xion's cardnal rules (or whatever) . What does the death of those girls in PA. have to do with the lord? Nothing. She enjoys the publicity. They do this for publicity.
The news broadcasters had it right about her being a heartless person without a soul. If anyone is going to christian hell then it is her.
Side note: I support the Freedom Riders. Keep up the good work.

Folks, you have to understand, the Phelps family are a family of LAWYERS. Their money-scheming is only successful if we do, in fact, try something in some kind of physical way or some way they deem possible to sue someone for. They have sued people for reasons you wouldn't believe. You should check out Fred Phelps profile at www.wikipedia.org if you don't believe me. As repulsive as the man & his family and his so-called 'church' is/are, this is what they do. This is their scam. This is how they make money. And it's been working for them for quite a while now. They're a media machine invented by Phelps to bring in money by exploiting and sucking people of their money and dignity. I guess you could essentially say that they are monetary and psychic vampires of the worst kind. I could mention of a way of taking care of the situation, but I do not want that karma. No, I think that by all of us eventually not doing anything at all in regards to these awful people, Phelps and his family will be, in fact, eventually going into obscurity which is where they fear the most. After all, if no one's listening anymore, and if everyone pities them as the under-evolved country bumpkin freakshow that everyone knows them to be, they will become what they will hate the most - entertainment. And bad entertainment at that. For there is no parody like that that of our own sour human history, and as we move into the next decade of our newborn century, that will be the only thing they represent and be remembered for.
