Pastor Calls Attendees 'Subversives' Because Of Dialogue

Author: Phil Anderson Source: The Capital-Journal (KS)

Title: PASTOR CALLS ATTENDEES 'SUBVERSIVES' BECAUSE OF DIALOGUE
Sunday night's 26th annual Interfaith of Topeka Community Thanksgiving Service at First Baptist Church, 3033 S.W. MacVicar, marked that rare time when people from a wide range of faith traditions not only gathered under one roof but participated in a service together.
The Rev. Joe Kutter, host pastor for the event from First Baptist Church, called those assembled "subversives" of the most dangerous kind, as their presence indicated they were committed to understanding and dialogue with others, even those who may not share the same religious beliefs.
In his welcoming remarks, Kutter said those assembled for the service gathered out of a shared commitment to the "mandates of compassion and hospitality."
Participants included adherents of Baha'i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, Pagan, Sikh and Unitarian Universalist faith traditions.

I notice the only way they were able to keep that article positive was to play down the Pagan/Wiccan aspects. The only mention was of music provided by the MoonShadow Coven. Too bad they couldn't have printed an exerpt of what the Pagan speaker said. But I guess that would just have reinforced the idea that the group was subversive...

of these gatherings across the country, I think. Not just around Thanksgiving, but all year round. The more dialogue we have between the multitudes of faiths out there, the more we are able to understand, respect and live in harmony with one another. The pastor certainly has a sense of humor in all this by ironically referring to the gathering as 'subversives'. So be it. In the eyes of the Shrub Theocracy, the concept of interfaith dialogue is subversive behavior, right along with peace activists. Kudos to those brave folks out there!

If being subversive means not looking down one's nose at someone else because he or she follows a different belief, then I'm all for it. By seeing similarities, then one can overlook differences and see others as human after all. Besides,it drives the fundies crazy.
