Blame Satan! Hedges Sees Hypocrisy, Violence On Christian Right

Author: Susan Antilla Source: Bloomberg

Title: BLAME SATAN! HEDGES SEES HYPOCRISY, VIOLENCE ON CHRISTIAN RIGHT
Forget Disney World and Epcot Center. You haven't seen anything until you've seen the Creation Museum set to open in Petersburg, Kentucky, this year.
It has a theater with seats that shake and machines that spray mist as God's six-day creation marathon is re-enacted. Museum scientists weave a yarn that has humans and dinosaurs popping up on the very same day -- the sixth, to be exact, which is when the Bible says God made all the land animals.
If you're studying up after your visit, creationists have answers to all your questions. Wondering how God managed to say ``Let there be light'' on Day One without making the sun until Day Four? Hey, no problem -- he's God, after all, so he made a temporary light to cover things until the official Day Four unveiling.
Chris Hedges recounts these and other, more alarming examples of the work of evangelicals in ``American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America.'' Hedges, a former reporter for the New York Times and a Harvard Divinity School graduate, focuses on the evangelical movement known as dominionism, in his view a dangerous force that manipulates followers into a faith that is political, intolerant and loaded with the potential for violence.

When I read the bible it seemed to me that if Jesus were alive today he would be hanging out with the homosexual community and the other branches of society that are downtrodden. He wasn't exactly one of the most socially conservative people at the time. This is just another case of people being totally wrong about their own faith. This kind of fanaticism is not real Christianity, as far as I know Jesus preached tolerance and love...

If you wish to hear this author speaking about this topic, you can try anyone of the following Internet Archive links:
[Web LINK] Interview between: 05:50 to 45:50
[Web LINK] Speech at a "teach in" in NYC sponsored by world can't wait between: 4:49 to 30:00

in the publication of the book mentioned in this article:
[Web LINK]
He was first put on my radar by kpfk.org out of LA that I listen to all the time. They have have over the past few years broadcast his speeches and interviewed him on the evils of the Christian Right.
His book is certainly getting the buzz it deserves, just check the Google news listing:
[Web LINK]
I have found this author to be the most eloquent in pointing out just what is so evil about the Christian Right that even a moderate or secular conservative might actually agree with.
I hope this problem sees the light of day because of this book.
Blessings! Spatch

a comment about: " Targeting the Vulnerable" is what the Islamic extreamists do in getting sucide bombers. I must also say that there are differences between the various Christian sects, which makes them very different. Personally, in my mind i refer to the dominionists or to the conservative/evangel Christians as the American Taliban as it wouldn't take much of a push to put them on the same level as the Islamic extreamists. this is my opinion and my experience. not all conservative/evangel Christians are like this but i've experienced too many who are. While Christianity offers many beautiful teachings and lessons, i really don't see much resemblence between the conservative/evangel and Jesus. much of their rhetoric seems to deal with the justification in their opinions, outlooks, and reactions to others be it differing religions, sexuality, or whatever. I see in this group the desire to control and dominate others. Jesus wasn't about this but you can't convince them of it. Jesus called his people out in service, they want to pull in and control. my opinion.

"I'm big and you are little, I'm right and you are wrong and there's nothing you can do about it. " That would sum up nicely what they would like to crow. Especially since they base everything they think and do on one book. The problem they are finding, is that they are having to adjust to the world, when it's their goal to make everything fit nice and neat with a scripture or parable for every occasion no matter how they have to twist things and change things in order to do so. And while they parade around pretending to be a people of peace- they are the most greedy, conniving, heartless and bloodthirsty of the lot. And those are their good points! I only wish they could either go first--or be left behind. It's people like those that give humanity a bad name.
