Atheists Want God Out Of Ky. Homeland Security

Author: Roger Alford, AP Source: Google

Title: ATHEISTS WANT GOD OUT OF KY. HOMELAND SECURITY
A group of atheists filed a lawsuit Tuesday seeking to remove part of a state anti-terrorism law that requires Kentucky's Office of Homeland Security to acknowledge it can't keep the state safe without God's help.
American Atheists Inc. sued in state court over a 2002 law that stresses God's role in Kentucky's homeland security alongside the military, police agencies and health departments.
Of particular concern is a 2006 clause requiring the Office of Homeland Security to post a plaque that says the safety and security of the state "cannot be achieved apart from reliance upon almighty God" and to stress that fact through training and educational materials.

I saw this item in the news yesterday. I wonder that only atheists are objecting to this law. Isn't this a direct violation of the seperation of church and state? Oh, yes, W and company have enshrined the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in a nice little box somewhere in Washington where we can see it on visiting days. But, the law of the land is whatever he says it is for all practical purposes.

. . . . sitting up there with Allah, having a nice cup of tea and observing "Eh, they saddle you with this crap too, don't they?"
I don't agree with the hardline atheists who want to abolish all religion; they're no better than the rabid supremacist fundamentalists of any group. I have to agree with the standpoint on this one, though. No government entity should be allowed to have a mandatory doctrine of faith.

...isn't just for Atheists but it is to the benefit of all, Christians included.
Pluralism and equality build better community, state, and national cohesiveness, united we stand divided we fall and all.
In stark contrast, I don't want Homeland Security confused as to who is on the right side of a Forces of Good™ vs. Forces of Evil™ dichotomy. Traditional or faith-based identity is totally unreliable in telling us who is likely to pose a threat. Behavioral patterns and certain red flags might though.

Abusers and Terrorists are operating from the same metaparadigm (it's behavioral) : [Web LINK]
A little logic...if the terrorists follow the one true and only God and if American theocrats also follow the one and only true God, how are they both on the winning side of a Forces of Good™ vs. Forces of Evil™ dichotomy? Ludicrous.

I am sure the training manual for KY is very short. God is omnipotent , omniscient, and omnipresent. However, we end up doing all the work. What could this tell us?

god is a busy being these days, being on everyone's side. Which means, essentially, that he is on no one's side. And the most famous words ever spoken at almost any disaster, is "god, how could that happen?" Is that the kind of defense he means? because if it is, why don't I feel any better about it? Because I sure don't. It takes courage and fortitude to be a Pagan, especially in Bible belt states and the same could be said of Atheists who certainly get equally short shrift among the more "gospelly blessed". While I fear fundies of every stripe, I do agree at least with some of the Atheist views, which rely on a more common sense approach to life and more of a dependence on oneself as opposed to a slavish belief in a xtian god that promises much-- but is given far too much credit, especially for those things ordinary people do for themselves and others in extraordinary circumstances.

Since the Christian "God," the Hebrew "God," and the Muslim "Allah" are all the same deity, how do they think it's going to help to have "Him" protect one state?

Seperation of church and state. Good for them!! Someone posted earlier about Ky and State. Kentucky is a Commonwealth, Just ask them. They Still have to abide by State regulations. Homeland Security, Military Intelligence, Oxymorons all. One joke sums it all up. What is the difference between the Military and the Boy Scouts? The Boy Scouts have Adult Supervision. And Yes I am a Vet.

That can't be easy, being a hardassed atheist in Kentucky. These are truly bold and courageous people, and they just happen to have an excellent argument. I can only dream of the day that a president skips all those mindless 'blessings' upon us. Imagine NO RELIGION. What we need is smart people that are really here to help. While there are some encouraging signs of evolution in a politician like Barack Obama, he too still sucks on the tits of Christianity. But hey, I have a dream. Change IS coming, if Kentucky is shaking it up.

The Mists Of Time (Zullinger, Pennsylvania) - Email Me

My concern with atheists is they would eliminate all public religious expression, even from Pagen beliefs. They would even prevent the President of the United States from ending an address to the American people by saying, "and may God bless the United States."
I get the feeling many atheists would prevent any public expression of God or religion, even Pagen expressions.
Yes it's bad when people like fundamentalist Christians try to tell you how to worship. But it's just as bad or worse when atheists can keep all of us from expressing any religious feeling. It's an approach that reminds me of the atheist former Soviet Union.
Freedonm of religion has two parts. 1. the right to believe. 2. the right to express those beliefs. The fact that Christians can put a statement into a homeland security act acknowledging a dependence on God tells me that non-Christians have the right to publicly express their beliefs as well.
When I read such a statement in something like a homeland security act, instead of getting upset with Christians about it, I say and publicly acknowledge, " I too acknowledge our dependence on The Goddess."

Silverfang (St. Clair Shores, Michigan) - Email Me

Isn't it stated in the Bill of Rights, as our First Amendment, that: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..." I'm pretty sure that if Kentucky has clauses that concern god in it's state laws that it goes against our rights as Americans. Not that those rights haven't already been infringed upon, but Come On! I hope to all the Gods, especially those of Justice, that American Atheists Inc. wins their lawsuit. The government has to learn that even they have to Abide By the Constitution. Hope and Work For a Better Future, Silverfang

Of course, this is also the state whose government tried (unsuccessfully) to make Christianity (they didn't specify which sect, but we can take a really good guess) the state's "official religion".

WitchPoet (Claremont, California) - Email Me - Web

Sum it up and they are saying that the whole idea of air-tight national security is a fantasy and we can just do our best and spin our prayer wheels and hope luck falls our way. The problem with this kind of attitude is the same problem that Justinian had. HE spent all his time and money praising God to protect the nation while NOT spending time and money on making secular security real. This sorry philosophy will lead to a token effort at security and a lot of theological masturbation aimed at putting a magic shield over Ky. That is without even considering the whole constution thing.
