Creation Museum's Attendance Exceeds Expectations

Author: Chris Kenning   Source: Courier-Journal (KY)

Title: CREATION MUSEUM'S ATTENDANCE EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

A school bus hissed to a stop near a giant concrete dinosaur perched outside the Creation Museum, a $27 million, 70,000-square-foot natural history museum-meets-Biblical theme park.

Inside, the students learned from displays that, contrary to mainstream textbooks, science supports the Bible's accounts of the Earth's creation in six days; that the Grand Canyon was created suddenly in Noah's flood; that dinosaurs and humans lived together; and that animal poison did not exist before Adam's original sin.

Two years after its controversial opening, the Creation Museum has drawn 720,000 visitors, far more than the 250,000 annually organizers predicted. It brought in $7 million in receipts last fiscal year, with organizers saying it has had an economic impact of more than $20 million.

Why Do We Care? Jun 12th. at 1:59:02 pm EDT

Finn (San Marcos, Texas) - Email Me

I have to ask myself why we appear to care so much about this place or the folks who go? They are entitled to believe in whatever they want. The same is true for us. The fact that we seem so fixated on their beliefs and apparent lack of historical accuracy only shows us to be as petty and deranged as some of them can be.

It is no skin off our nose if they believe in such things. I'm sure they feel the same about our various beliefs. Their crazy ideas pale beside some of the insanity I listen to from my peers under the Pagan Umbrella. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

I look at it this way, they are free (and apparently happy) to hobble themselves intellectually and practice the application of bad scholarship and science. This means that they (and their children) will be at a disadvantage when in competition with us (and our children) . Water always finds a level. It is far better to simply take advantage of the situation than cackle and preen about who stupid they are... and thus infer how smart that makes us.

Really? Jun 11th. at 10:01:51 pm EDT

I can't believe anyone is really surprised at the attendance level for this place. With all the things I've seen and heard on the news/internet and other sources about 'that' group, I figured they'd all flock to the "House of Six Millennia" pretty quickly.

I was having good fun poking through their site, but then, in such bold terms one of their prime exhibits declares: 'Natural Selection is NOT Evolution.' None of that molecules-to-man nonsense for us, they say. That's enough to stop the heart of Richard Dawkins right there. I just hope he doesn't give them the satisfaction.

And yet, there's something about them I envy. Imagine passing through this world with the conviction, with constant reinforcement from your parents and peer group, that there indeed IS a great bearded Hebrew god in the sky that cares--that cares a lot, actually. All about you and everything else too, all at once. Well, except for all those unlucky people that starve and get murdered, etc., but I digress.

For a very simple pledge of faith, you too can spend endless happy days with all of your dead friends and relatives in the afterlife. Well, that's where the train derails for me, since I actually pray for some peace and quiet, not some eternal family picnic. Heaven forbid. But that must be of some comfort to those people.

after reading their website,
but while their pictured exhibitions are very stunning, they are also very full of hokum with a capital H.
I am sorry that the money spent for this ridiculous and misleading endeavor was an exhibition in waste.

I reiterate, "Which way to the Egress?"

Just take a look at their website.

Not So Funny Jun 11th. at 12:53:11 am EDT

R. Cicero (Seattle, Washington) - Email Me

I had the good fortune to visit down South in my younger days. I remember having the time of my life in places like Gatlinburg, TN and at some really impressive theme parks. But that was then, this is now. This sort of biblically themed 'edutainment' is no joke once you get a whiff of the lasting impressions it makes. J

ust listen to some of those responses. What creeps.

There is an adventurous side of me that can seriously enjoy such outrageous public offerings, like visiting Hell Houses round October. But I never go, because they line the pockets of, and also shape, validate and reinforce the minds of some seriously small-minded people. The kind that didn't blink and voted for Bush, twice.

Now if I go to Walmart, I go out of my way to try and subtly shape the corporation to my tastes. For instance, by ONLY buying vegan and organic foods. But as tempted as some may be to visit this museum for kicks, know that it will only stuff the coffers of a coaltion of theocrats and the churches with which they associate.

To me, that is a great evil, greater than any evil they ever worry about. They have little appreciation for the vast harm their damaged brains have done and continue to do to this world. Even the Vatican takes issue with such outrageous abuses of the truth.

...as to why the museum is so popular: fratboys. Well, okay, all college students, for that matter--and high school students. I would love to get drunk and loudly mock the human-friendly dinos. Sounds like a good time.

My real question is just how many of these visitors actually believe in creationism? And how many of them are under the age of ten?

Paddle faster boys...I hear banjo music!!

It is no wonder KY (makers of fine Jelly by the way) enjoys such a good reputation in our republic. With thinking like this, we will all soon be partying like it's 1499.

The Bible is a great story, full of sex, intrigue, love poetry, battle scenes, slavery and war. I mean, If JJ Abrahms wasn't so busy butchering Star Trek, he could make a blockbuster hit with the stuff in the book, but like Star Trek, it is just a story.

Come on folks...the Bible (old testament anyway) was written by Bronze age tribesmen. Why is it we cling to this Bronze age story and not to others??? Doesn't make sense. You know...the Aztec and Mayans have some good stories...lets go read them for a while....You know, before the end of the world in 2012 like the Mayans say it will.

LOL,

Peace and Light

Jeff

Amazing Indeed...... Jun 10th. at 2:19:03 pm EDT

Karl (Detroit Metro, Michigan) - Email Me - Web

Yes, they believe in a Universal Higher Power/Intelligence, and therefore their dogmatic fabrications are the “only true” “gospel”, and, no matter if Science completely disproves it, it’s still all “true” anyway.

As has been suggested, ignorance of the sheeple goes hand-in-hand with the absurd literalizations of biblical fables and associated religionism. The notion that humans and dinosaurs co-existed at the same time is, of course, abject nonsense, as is the ridiculous idea that Noah’s ark actually existed. Noah’s ark is physically impossible, and there was no “Abraham”, “Isaac”, “Jacob” “Ishmael” or “Sarah” either. Yes, and we are also asked to believe that a nation of several million people allegedly arose from the 70 individuals mentioned in Genesis within the span of several hundred years, and that the savagery, barbarity and brutality that are described in biblical texts are the actual “divinely inspired” “word” of an alleged deity, along with “original sin” and other doctrinal absurdities. And of course, “Jesus” is allegedly coming back…. ….any millennium now.

There is much more that stands in refutation of dogmatic drivel:

Humphreys’ thoughts on the matter: ( [Web LINK] )

Biblical Nonsense: ( [Web LINK] )

Skeptics’ Annotated Scriptures: ( [Web LINK] )

As for myself, I’ll be contributing to soup kitchens, etc., to help those in need, as opposed to attending the Creation “Museum”. Unfortunately, many of those people in need are there as the result of the policies of the fascists, who got together with the religionists and really made a mess of things.

I am from Kentucky, I can see why it has such a economic impact because it cost $17 just to get in. I am going to home school my son due to the public school situation. I was a substitute teacher, I do not blame the teachers it is the kids. I want my son to have a well rounded education.

Seven million in Snake-oil, whodathunkit. People wonder why Science and all the other subjects taught in school rankings for those of us in the United States are so low compared to the rest of the civilized world. I give you exhibit A.

But to the Creation Museum founders, it doesn't matter; let's just say he did and call it "science."

I will probably take my children to this museum when they're teens, if it's still around. I will do this to show them what happens when one ignores the principles of scientific inquiry and physical evidence, and settles for

"Get an idea --> Ignore any contradicting evidence--> Keep your idea forever. The End."
