Ky. Sued For Denying 'In God We Trust' License Plate

Author: The Associated Press   Source: First Amendment Center

Title: KY. SUED FOR DENYING 'IN GOD WE TRUST' LICENSE PLATE

A Louisville-based group denied an application to sponsor an “In God We Trust” specialty license plate has filed suit against the state Transportation Cabinet and two lawmakers.

The group, Reclaim Our Culture Kentuckiana, had said in its 2008 application that it would use proceeds from license plate sales to raise awareness about harm caused by pornography and the sex industry. An appeal by the group also stalled in the Legislature after the initial application was turned down.

The Transportation Cabinet denied the group’s application partially on the grounds that the group promotes a “specific faith or religious position.”

License Plate Frames Jul 10th. at 12:40:54 pm EDT

Haven't these people heard of license plate frames? I have one on my car that says "Wiccan Clergy-Proud to serve the Pagan community". Then there are bumper stickers (magnetic ones for those who don't want to damage the paint if they change their minds) that will proclaim various and sundry veiwpoints.

There are also vanity plates that people can pay extra to have. One of my favorites, seen in Oklahoma, is IVSNLVS. It took me a while to figure that one out but when I did, it was funny.

Why make the state produce a plate is anything but a series of numbers and letters?

Freedom of Speach is putting an "In God We Trust" bumper sticker on your car, not the state putting it on a license plate. When the government (any branch of it) starts "approving" of these things it simply adds more fule to the "We are a Christian Nation" fire. I for one am quite sick of this fire burning in my back yard. Pretty soon it will be at my front door, forcing me out of my home. There is a seperation of church and state for a reason, and every little piece like this that gets through just whittles that seperation away.

Prosecuting Legislators? Jul 8th. at 3:35:57 pm EDT

Ahr-Ohn (Bridgeport, Connecticut) - Email Me

"The two legislators named as defendants in ROCK’s lawsuit have not yet responded to the suit. Sen. Ernie Harris, R-Crestwood, and Rep. Hubie Collins, D-Wittensville, are chairmen of the Legislature’s transportation committees."

In Connecticut, I recall what's done in the Assembly may be questioned in no other place. Prosecuting the Legislators would be seen as Malicious Prosecution, unless a federal court found it was a matter of Republican Form of Government.

I'm not sure I want to direct the thoughts of the average drive time fundy, towards child abuse. OTOH,

" ranging from breast cancer awareness to spay-neuter pet programs."

Spaying and Neutering are directly in opposition to the Laws of Moses, as is the divorce of a pubescent handmaiden.

One Little Question... Jul 8th. at 12:34:21 pm EDT

Sparrow (Northern (not city) , Wisconsin) - Email Me

What does religion have to do with porn? I have friends with an undeclared position on religion (not athiests, but with no particular belief) who think that child porn, etc, etc, is just sick. I'm sure they would support something with proceeds going to that type of cause, but there's a catch.

They'd be declaring a faith that they're not a part of. (I dunno about you guys, but to my friends and I, 'In God we trust'=Christian, not Jewish or Islam.)

What Are We Thinking? Jul 8th. at 11:04:06 am EDT

Oakwind (The Army, Maryland) - Email Me

When I first read this article, I pretty much said the same as several comments here, until I thought a little more about this. The group is offering to sponsor a license plate that has “In God We Trust” on it. They claim to want to use the proceeds to “raise awareness about harm caused by pornography and the sex industry.”

Personally, I have no problem at all with them sponsoring such a license plate, nor giving anyone the CHOICE to have it on their car. The last time I looked, the first amendment stated that the freedom of speech shall not be abridged. This means that no matter how stupid and annoying I may think it is, there is nothing I can or would want to do about the little plastic “Jesus” fish. I don’t even have a problem with letting people have the CHOICE to have this license plate, as long as it remains a choice.

Furthermore, I think that any organization should have the same opportunity to sponsor a plate and give people the choice to have it on their cars, even disgusting ones like the KKK or NAMBLA. (More on this in a minute…)

Remember, the organization has to sponsor the plate, which includes costs they may not recoup if people choose not to have the plate on their cars. This influx of revenue could be a great benefit to any motor vehicle department. The only requirement would have to be that ALL organizations would have to be allowed this opportunity. I see no problem with this.

A bit off topic, but, if people want to tell the world what they are, I say go ahead. It makes it easier for me to know what to expect from you. If I see someone who wishes to identify themselves as a racist, sexist, creedist, homophobe, or pedophile, good! Then I know that I have protect myself and my loved ones from them.

If they would all do it, then we would know who to watch out for. I say these are good things. It lets me know where the murky waters in the gene pool are and where the lapses in intelligent discourse will come from. I was particularly outraged at the Nazis for forcing Jews to wear badges identifying themselves as such, but I have no problem with someone CHOOSING to wear that identification.

If Only Jul 8th. at 3:39:12 am EDT

Araelus Stormwolf (Bury St Edmunds, England) - Email Me

It could read. 'In all Gods we trust.'

Or 'In the Goddess we trust.' That would ne better.

Thankfully we don't have this problem in the UK. Though there's a lot of plastic silver Xtian fish stuck on cars.

Could be 'In COD we trust.'

We also have a similar state-sponsored tag. It kinda give me the heebie-jeebies to pass so many of them on my way thru a parking lot because of some bad experiences with some bible-thumping Jesus people. You know, those kind of Christians that will wear their faith on their sleeves and either try to save you or at least preach you to death?

But, in spite of that, I say let people choose that tag if they want it. I did so for my dad when I bought his tag for him this year. I knew he'd like it. Afterall, the tables could be turned. Those of us here could be in the majority and THEY could be in our current positions.

Will I choose the God tag for my car this month? No, I want "Alabama The Beautiful". Alabama is beautiful, if you see the right places.

Will Christianity in America ever grow the hell up? If I hear the words "judeo christian values" to describe this country's origins again, I'll vomit.

I mean no disrespect. But I'm sick of the time and effort wasted on immature fundie garbage like this. Here's a suggestion: feed the hungry, heal the sick, FORGIVE and not judge. Stop making everything political, grow thicker skin and learn boundaries in the face of discourse.

I don't have a problem with the "In God We Trust" because I don't look at it as one specific religion. The fact that one group wants to use it is were I have the problem.

Well, Jul 7th. at 5:41:39 pm EDT

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

I certainly am glad I don't live in a state that would consider making me put that awful motto on my car. I already have to endure it on my money. I'd just have to do some creative defacing. It is ironic that because they promote a positon and specific faith they should be denied.
