Ten Commandments Lawsuit In Jackson County Could Be Resolved

Title: TEN COMMANDMENTS LAWSUIT IN JACKSON COUNTY COULD BE RESOLVED
A federal lawsuit over Ten Commandments displays in the Jackson County Courthouse could be resolved for about $6,000 if a judge accepts a proposed settlement filed Tuesday by the fiscal court and the American Civil Liberties Union.
In order to avoid a costly court battle, Judge-Executive William O. Smith had nine framed displays of the commandments removed last week from hallways, entrances and various offices in the courthouse.

"Finding only a portion of these laws in the 1930's, they are believed to be some of the earliest known codified laws. Found to be originally written on what is believed to be stone tablets in the Sumerian language. Lipit-Ishtar, was a shepherd and farmer from Nippur, Iraq who became the ruler of Isin from about 1868 B.C. to 1857 B.C."

In and of itself, Hammurabi's code is a remarkable achievement - and it has attained a historical place of note since it was long thought to be the oldest legal code, created out of whole cloth at Babylon. Now that we are more fully aware of the older Sumerian legal codes and how they (especially Lipit-Ishtar's code) were the direct predecessors of Hammurabi's code, we can see Hammurabi's code in a different light. While still a singular achievement, Hammurabi's code is essentially the collected culmination of what was almost entirely Sumerian legal wisdom.
Even the form of Hammurabi's code is identical to its Sumerian predecessors. It begins with a long and boastful prologue, contains a main body of individual laws, and concludes with a lengthy and flowery epilogue."...

The Code of Hammurabi is one of the MAJOR influences of all modern law, no matter which "Civilized" Nation is being spoken of. Any monument to U.S. Law should automatically include the Code of Hammurabi.
And if the Christian Ten Commandments is going to be displayed in/on/around ANY Government building, then the teachings/commandments/precepts of ALL religions should be displayed right alongside them.
Otherwise, keep the blasted things in a private office. Not in a Public hallway or anywhere else they can be clearly seen by the Public.

I've said it for years, if someone wants to erect a monument to law, they should put up a copy of Hammurabi's law pillar, which was (as far as we know) the first written code of law.
