Ky. Mother Upset By Football Player Son's Baptism

Author: AP   Source: Boston Globe (MA)

Title: KY. MOTHER UPSET BY FOOTBALL PLAYER SON'S BAPTISM

The parents of a 16-year-old Kentucky football player who was baptized at a church during a team function says they believe their son may have felt some pressure to go through with the ceremony.

Dannie Ammons told The Associated Press he had no idea his son was being taken to a church in another county last month.

is not a new one, but it is underhanded. When the Spanish came to the New World, they often baptised any that they encountered, even those curious bystanders that were standing there wondering just what the heck was going on. They never bothered to ask if they wanted to be baptised, as they often did it enmass and many of those caught up were then part of a church that many would rather have seen shoved off into the sea and back where it came from.
This is no different. This is a type of bait and switch tactic in order to gain converts. Naturally the kids would go along with it--monkey see, monkey do and all, but it was taking away the responsibilty from those Parents that may have wanted to attend the baptism in another fashion and in their own way and time, and it was brutally proselytizing those who may not have wanted to be baptised in the first place, but were coerced by the coach preacher and team mates to do it anyway, again-- against parental permission since the parents were never informed until- after- it happened.
I think both should be jailed for that.

Sheesh!

Ok, Coach takes the team to a church to hear a "motivational speaker", trusting the individual team members to tell their parents where they are going and what will be happening -- no "permission slips" to sign; team members get baptized to "fit in" (hey, "everybody else" was doing it...) -- and the School Superintendent, who "just happened" to also attend the "revival meeting", does not see where the problem is.

Sorry, but when I think of a "motivational speaker", I think of someone giving a generic motivational speech -- not a Baptist preacher giving a Hellfire and Brimstone Baptist sermon on the dangers of "sin" and a life of "Godless-ness". I sure as hell don't think of someone who will end up persuading high school kids to "spontaneously" get baptized.

I suppose there would be no problem with Coach taking the team to hear a "motivational speaker" at a brothel, or maybe a casino, too. Hey, "it's a team function, an extra-curricular activity", so what if they end up spending time with a prostitute or gambling -- that's what the "motivational speech" was all about! Or how about if Coach "just happened" to be a "Moonie", and he took the team to a "Moonie" religious gathering -- that would be ok, wouldn't it, as long as the School Superintendent was also a "Moonie"? Gas and such would be "donated" and the bus -- owned and maintained by the School District -- would be driven by a volunteer......

Poor judgement or not, Coach Mooney has no right to take any member of the football team, or any student at all, to HIS choice of religious service without getting WRITTEN permission from the parents of the individual under-18 years of age team members and students. His job is to help the team learn how to play football as a team -- NOT indoctrinate the kids into believing / following what HE thinks is the "correct" religion.

As for the pastor who performed the baptisms -- since he finds it so difficult to distinguish between 16 years old and 20 years old (the boston.com story) , perhaps he should start asking all young people to show proof of their age and/or their parents' consent before baptising them. That way he won't be "accidentally" violating his own rule against baptising a minor without the parents' permission.

Hey, Pastor Davis, here's your first clue: They are members of the HIGH SCHOOL football team.

Mother should contact Americans United for Separation of Church and State, not the ACLU. Coach and Principal should be fired. I don't care if someone paid for the gas and drove. The bus is government property and so is the insurance on it. What if it had been in an accident? Coach is TOTALLY out of line. If it had been my kid, I would have sued so fast their heads would be spinning. I would be suing even if a bus had not been involved.

like that district's administration needs a refresher course, more likely an introductory course, on the First Amendment, what that means and how it applies to the government agency that a public school is.

Would they like that school bus being used to take kids to a voluntary visit to a Jewish Shul? a Hindu temple? a Pagan grove? a Muslim center? Well then the exact same logic applies to any church of their faith too.

Underage Is Underage Sep 8th. at 10:08:50 pm EDT

Sea Raven (New Haven, Connecticut) - Email Me

This boy (and I assume at least most of his teammates) was under 18, the legal age of consent in this country. That the coach essentially went behind the parents' backs by not sending home a permission slip or at least a flyer notifying them of exactly where he was taking the kids is unconscionable.

The boy even admitted he went along because his "friends were doing it." Sheesh.

I Read In Another Article Concerning This.. Sep 8th. at 9:31:45 pm EDT

Medea (Somewhere, Massachusetts) - Email Me

That the team was told there was a steak and chicken dinner involved. One of the teens admitted that he went because of that.
I can hear it now.

" Baptism? jesus? Oh yeah, sure. Go jesus. Hey, can I have another piece of that and some corn too please? Thank you..."

All I can say is these freaky fundies are consistently stooping to new lows in order to push that crap off on the innocent, or unsuspecting. However, it seems from reading the articles I've seen on this that most of them didn't take it seriously anyway. The kid was listening to his I-pod! Ha!

And if they don't take it seriously, they won't be affected. Which is a good thing.

I've told that particular god in no uncertain terms that I don't like him, and to stay away from me. I wish his followers would back up off of everybody too. Sheesh.

How many times have we seen a similar occurance? AND the only thing that seems to change the status quo is to sue. What a shame the xians can't let people worship as they choose rather than pouring their beliefs down someone's throat. They complain they don't get any respect. They might try giving a little respect and see if that helps their image.

What The ...?!!! Sep 8th. at 7:40:59 pm EDT

LadyWolf48 (Alameda, California) - Email Me

Is this article real?...lets recap:
- a football coach takes several of his high school players to a pray meeting. He uses a school bus to do it and doesn't notify the parents saying it was up to the players to tell them about it.. At the prayer meeting, several of them decided, or just went along with, to be baptized.

The Superintendent of schools basically brushes off the parents and others and doesn't seem to understand why they're angry?!!!!

Coaches are considered another parent by a lot of kids who play a variety of sports. They have an obligation to ensure the safety and care of any child in their custody. However, where does it note in any playbook of rules that they have the absolute right to determine the religious beliefs of their players.

Please tell me that the coach, Superintendent and any other adult that knew about this has been fired.

Voluntary Minor Sep 8th. at 4:09:01 pm EDT

Ahr-Ohn (Bridgeport, Connecticut) - Email Me

"She said she was prepared to drop the matter until she found out that Meeks attended the service. She said she consulted a lawyer in Elizabethtown but hasn't decided what action she will take.

"They have no right to take my son on a school bus across county lines to be a church to be baptized," she said."

County Lines are not State Lines, to my knowledge. All I can see, is that the coach and other school officials should have known the football player to be underage.

It sounds like an effective motivational speaker, and the coach would have valued that, regardless of religion.

Jesus must have been a pretty good coach, if you look at what his team's accomplished, and may therefor be respected in a part of the world that worships FootBall.

I could trump a mere Baptism, but it means the entire team would win, in all ways, being attuned unto The Holy Grail.
