La. Parish Bans Fortunetelling

Author: The Associated Press   Source: First Amendment Center

Title: LA. PARISH BANS FORTUNETELLING

The Livingston Parish council voted unanimously last week to ban fortunetelling.

Debra Jeffreys, a Wiccan from Kenner, said the ordinance violates the First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and religion.

The ordinance cites a state law allowing parishes to regulate fortunetelling activities with penalties of up to a year in jail and $500 in fines.

The ordinance makes it illegal to engage in all forms of fortunetelling from crystal-ball gazing to card reading.

Corrections made:)

We have several Church members in various parishes and some had left before you all had showed.

We allow ALL of our members our password to our Witchvox account and Night Fairy is from Covington and was there before everyone else and left as soon as they passed it.

Actually, Monte wanted to leave as soon as they passed it also and I convinced him to stay and see what was going to take place.

The ordinance was the first item mentioned on their list and they did NOT ask for anyone to speak either FOR or AGAINST.

The evening was chaotic and our only concern was to try and stay away from the media as much as possible.

Out of boredom, Monte began to travel around the room and went to the restroom and did the whole "meet and greet"

I (Kiria Gypsy) was there for more reasons other than the tarot ordinance.

The Animal shelter and the subdivision I reside in were also other items on their list.

I attend alot of the Livingston Parish council meetings and I knew what was in store.

I was just not expecting them to pass the Ordinance first.

Issues like that are usually last and they sometimes leave the room to discuss the topic in further detail.

They have an utter lack of professionalism and personally they need to incorporate "Roberts Rules of Order" in our opinion for their council meetings.

We are VERY greatful that others showed for support as my shop is in the middle of being built at this time in Livingston Parish.

We have made corrections to Night Fairy's posting and again, thanks for the support in Livingston and we hope to see you again soon except under different circumstances:)

I wonder if this is only in regard to accepting money for the predictions- or everything?
This means banning even children's games, and there are a few out there that make predictions. Predicting the weather falls into this category as well, which means the Weather Channel will have to be banned as should Pat Robertson's ridiculous and morbid predictions. And what is betting on a horse race or a football game? It should be interesting to see how this plays out. Besides, just because they outlaw it, doesn't mean that it would stop. If people want predictions, they will find them.

My name is Valli Harry, I am a Wiccan and member of the Covenant of the Pentacle Wiccan Church, in New Orleans. I live in Livingston Parish and attended the Council Meeting last Thursday evening when the council members so swiftly passed the ordinance banning Fortunetelling in Livingston Parish. I, along with other members of the Pagan community were allowed to speak even though the ordinance had passed earlier. Even though it was a small group of Pagans representing our community it was wonderful to see such a diverse group. Debra Jeffreys from New Orleans Merry Meet spoke with her usual charm and conviction. Monte Plaisance and Jamie Cain of the Church of Thessaly in Livingston Parish both delivered very sincere messages to the Council, as well. I was able to address the Council, as well, but we were quickly reminded that the ordinance had already passed. I mentioned in my address that each member of the council should each have a packet, faxed earlier in the day, to council member Jimmy McCoy, but he had not made copies so the other councilmembers were without our literature. The Council President, Buddy Mincey stated that he felt that since each council member, other than McCoy, including himself had not seen Rev. Rieth's packet, that possibly the ordinance should be considered at another council meeting, so that the Pagan community would be given a " fair day before council" Three of the council members, as seen in the article, stated without hesitatation that they would not change their vote. With that being said, Council Mincey, still felt the ordinance should be readdressed. We await their decision with hope and optimism.

If a Roman Catholic priest has a confessional and a collection plate, he would be violating this law.

If a Baptist preacher expounds on what God told him, and he passes the plate, he would be violating this law.

If someone makes a weather forecast and is paid for it, they violate this law.

So, let's go get some of them busted if any of us gets harassed!

Does this mean that the cable provider for this county will have to block all broadcasts of the Weather channel, and of the 700 Club? Does this mean that political pollsters will be unable to publish their results in the county either?

Sounds like a place which could use a dose of a "White Mutiny" to show them just what they've done.

this is part of the rebuilding process of Louisiana, to keep all those 'undesirables' out who got what was coming to them in Katrina. But for a state that has legitimately legalized Wicca and recognized it as a religion, this seems a step backward. But given the state of affairs not only there, but also in the federal government, who is really surprised?

"Harrell and Councilmen Jimmy McCoy and Eddie Wagner said they had no plans to change their votes.

"I got elected to represent my constituents," McCoy said. "I am a Christian and I love the Lord, period. We can vote today or next month, my vote won't change."

I'll bet he even helps carry the collection plate, after his preacher makes promises. Someone should collect evidence on that.

If someone wants to set up a shop, in that parish, I've a style of One Card Tarot, that would be legal.
