ACLU: Take Picture Of Jesus Out Of Slidell Court

Author: The Associated Press Source: Nola.com

Title: ACLU: TAKE PICTURE OF JESUS OUT OF SLIDELL COURT
A painting of Christ, with a sign reading "To know peace, obey these laws," has no place in Slidell City Court, the Louisiana American Civil Liberties Union says.
Unless the picture and plaque are removed within a week, the ACLU may sue on behalf of a person who filed a written complaint with the group, the organization said.

| Remove Court Officials From The Court Too | Jun 24th. at 11:04:12 pm EDT
|

Terry (Irvington, Virginia) - Email Me

It makes sense to publicly pillory the court officials responsible for installing, or retaining, or failing to proactively remove, a posting which is clearly illegal for government to sponsor. As such, this isn't a private deal for the ACLU to keep quiet, but rather a case where it's a public issue that government officials are abusing authority, merely by the illegal religious promotion existing in the first place, no matter how quickly removed after the ACLU demand.
What would be a major procedural improvement to American justice would be for Federal courts to include process by which supervisory court officers, judges and otherwise, would be removed from government employment and subjected to civil rights deprivation conspiracy criminal prosecutions, in addition to offending courts being ordered to remove illegal materials of this type.
It's not just the Jeezus junk being present which results in a courthouse being a place where litigants are denied their legal rights. It's even moreso a courthouse staffed by often unindicted felon prosecutors who selectively hide exculptatory evidence and engage in malicious prosecutions, and one staffed by judges who ignore obviously illegal religious biases if not actively create them. If it were limited to a choice of one or the other of putting the Jeezus junk or the court officials in a large dumpster and hitting the "compact" switch, it would be the corrupt court officers who should go first. The Jeezus junk is only a sign of the problem with the corrupt and feloniously inclined humans, not the root cause.
As to that perhaps impressing some as a violent solution, in context, it's not, at least compared to no such action. Abuse of power by government is backed by radio linked gangs of colors wearing mercenaries with truncheons and sidearms and heavier arms, plus a wide network of human cages. To remove the criminal conspiracy gang leaders from positions impacting as many people as do most courts is ultimately a major reduction in wrongful violence, compared to which compacting a few judges and prosecutors in a dumpster next to their Jeezus junk is a relatively peaceful solution, which in the larger balance stands to seriously reduce that violence. The major challenge is how to prevent one corrupt taxpayer funded gang from being replaced with another even worse, especially in areas where many voters support illegal government activities.
Ideally, these situations wouldn't arise in the first place and need corrective actions. Sadly, that's not the reality of our society.

... without the quote, I wouldn't mind a painting of Jesus there so long as they had paintings of every other being or deity of importance to the religious community. I would love to see Jesus next to Mithra next to Dionysus next to Horus seeing as how they seem to have so much in common. lol

| Yet They Support Foot Baths. | Jun 22nd. at 9:09:50 am EDT

Wytchone (LaPlace, Louisiana) - Email Me

At times the ACLU really confuses me. I can see why why they would take out the Jesus picture in the court house. Yet I can't understand why on the other hand they would support foot baths for Muslims paid for by the U.S. taxpayers.
We need to have it ALL GONE. Just let people go to court, school, or what not if its a place supported by public funds.
Other wise we will have a mess as all religions clamor for a spot.

Pointless conflict. Never bothered anyone before, and because one person takes offense, we need to waste time and money removing a painting?
Am I the only pagan who isn't bloody terrified to be near anything even remotely related to Christianity? I fully support the prevention of further religious symbolism being placed in public buildings, but, honestly...let bygones be bygones.
Besides, Jesus was as much of a sorcerer as the next guy, anyway.

I agree with everyone else. We wouldn't have the freedoms that we have today if it weren't for our military and the ACLU. Lol.

The ACLU has a clear statement as to their position on the 2nd Amendment, for anyone who cares to actually educate themselves on the matter:

Further, there is another well-funded organization dedicated to defending that amendment, the NRA. So the ACLU focuses on other issues. So what? If they didn't, where do you suppose we'd be today?

with the ACLU's position, but I cannot understand why they have to make a public spectacle of these kinds of cases. Is it not possible to approach the Slidell County courts first without creating a media circus? Certainly they're not that hard-up for publicity.

Like it or not, the ACLU has been trying to fight against the Christian fundies push into the public sphere. Without them, we would have more Ten Commandment plaques, Jesus paintings, and public Christian prayer in our schools and civil buildings than we can count.
So we can either support them, and help win ourselves the right to live without being surrounded by the trappings of a religion that wants a theocracy, or we can go against them and see how long our own freedoms stand. Your decision.
As for this case, no religious painting, monument, or anything of the like deserves a place in a courthouse. This may not be as blatant as that huge piece of granite from Alabama (was it Alabama? correct me if I'm wrong) , but it's still there. I'm sure Christians wouldn't want a painting of the Spiral Goddess and the Wiccan Rede underneath it, would they?
It's either all religions or no religions. However, considering there's just way too many religions and sects of said religions to please, it may just be easier to remove religion from the public sphere altogether.

A picture like that should hang in either a religious school or a Sunday school- not in a secular place. When it becomes a distraction it is better to remove it.

Opus the Poet (Garland, Texas) - Email Me - Web

It's been there for years and this is the first complaint?
Maybe others would have liked to complain, but feared that what they went to court for in the first place would have gone badly had they complained. Especially if they were a minority religion.
