Samhain Holiday Marks A 'Veil Between Worlds'

Author: Terry Smith Source: The Town Talk (LA)

Title: SAMHAIN HOLIDAY MARKS A 'VEIL BETWEEN WORLDS'
Happy Samhain, or as others know it, Halloween! The earliest record that exists is a First Century CE Roman tablet, found in France over 100 years ago. The word "Samhain" is of Celtic origin, and is pronounced "SOW-en" within the U.K., and "sam-HANE", here in America.
This night brought excitement to our European ancestors. They believed that this night was the time when the "Veil Between Worlds" was at its thinnest, and a time when the love of the living and the dead could transcend through that thinned Veil, and each side could reach to the other, to express that love.

Are small papers in Louisiana that desperate for column-inches that they'd help someone so presumptuous and naive as this guy make a public embarrassment of both himself and larger pagan communities?
Maybe when he grows up someday (note the author picture with article) he'll learn that an example of how some pagans or groups ritualize a sabbat is not representative of all pagans or the sabbat itself, while classic tests for posers mispronouncing do not make for authoritative nor competent reporting.
At the same time, for some parts of the deep South, this article might represent the paper's editors demonstrating an intent to foster religious tolerance or diversity, while failing to know where to use their red pens.

New Year [Web LINK] actually I'm off by about 2 weeks, roughly. I gotta point out that Shemini/Atzeret sabbat, Feria was the ancient Roman term for holiday & is also shows up in 'deformed Latin' languages Italian, French, Spanish, etc. I find it fascinating how local changes over long periods of time can heterogenize what used to be 1 language.

I love this Sabbat! I have friends that pronounce it both ways actually. The reason being, it helps them remember how to properly spell it. Plus I am in an german based community, and last I checked Sam-Hane is how they pronounce the word over there.
Samhain is the religious part for me, Halloween is the time to go out and have fun dressing up and being with friends for the one night of year we all can act like ourselves.
I can't wait for this friday!!! This will always be one of my fav times of year, but I come by that naturally, it's my dad's as well.

I've often pronounced it "Sam-hane" before I discovered what the proper pronunciation is supposed to be, but I do refer to it as Halloween. A fairly good explanatory article, although a bit de rigueur for the holiday. Still, it was better than some I've read.

I think you'll find that Samhain is pronounced "SOW-en" no matter what side of the Atlantic you're on!
