Biography Channel Chronicles Witches, Past And Present

Author: Lisa Guerriero   Source: Wicked Local (MA)

Title: BIOGRAPHY CHANNEL CHRONICLES WITCHES, PAST AND PRESENT

Most biographies explore the life of a single individual, but recently, a television documentary delved into the collective history of witches.

Biography Channel’s “Witches” chronicles the evolution of witches over the past 700 years, from Bridget Bishop to the Blair Witch.

“They are mysterious people,” the narrator says in the opening sequence. “Revered by some, considered peculiar by others. Misunderstood by many. Long persecuted for their beliefs, tens of thousands have been tortured and executed. They are witches.”

In between, the program mingles footage of the thoughts and lives of modern-day witches and their quest for public understanding of their lifestyles.

I'm sure it is a good program. We don't have cable (better uses for the money) , but I may look around and see if I can find it online.

Hell, it's probably as close as we're going to get for a while to that old hearts'n'minds magic. More than I can do-- I am only one person; I can spend all morning making a little headway only to have it all undone by one other person.

Stuff like this will do more in a day to stop this stupid war-- or anyway keep it cooler, longer-- than The Great NorthEast Benton County Coffee Campaign will do in a decade.

And that's a good thing.

I should be happy.

I am happy.

I'm also long overdue for a furlough.

I shouldn't be so bitterly cynical. I'm sorry-- that's the shadow side of my way. It still gets away from me from time to time. Maintaining a demeanor of hope and tolerance, where there seems so often to be so little, wears on the hope and the patience (both, actually, in typically short supply) in my nature.

I think I'll take the rest of the holidays off this year. Feed the squirrels, or something.

I can understand the outrage and skepticism of some (you guys know how I get with the honesty about xianism) , and the optimism of others. All I'm saying is that most people would rather turn the channel to some manufactured "reality" show on Faux instead of getting "ejumacated."

Now if you'll excuse me, the video game world of Final Fantasy XII is more appealing at the moment than real life.

To quote my favorite literary witch, "Hrmph."

That's nice and everything.

They ought to talk to a few more of us, maybe about how we walk around "Paganoid," in other words, so damn scared of persecution that the fear needs its own word. About how we see enemies everywhere, reflexively, both when they exist and when they do not.

I'll give them a succinct piece about just how great and constant an effort it takes to fight that fear, and about just how damned pointless that effort seems when, every time you get it under control, some stupid self-righteous bigot in one camp or another opens up their mouth and gets it going all over again.

Or what it's like to live, to borrow this time from our 'rich' sitcom heritage, five miles from the front lines in some stupid (culture) war you never wanted to be part of, listening to the exchange of fire, knowing that it's mostly innocent bystanders getting f*ck*d over...

...and knowing that, unless you can find some nothing-short-of-magical way to bend the trend in the old hearts-and-minds campaign about 45 degrees in your favor or just put the whole damned thing off for another 50 or 75 years, you (and your kids) are going to wind up as collateral damage on the losing side.

F*ck the holidays. It's two days before the Festival of Fats, and I think I'll break that stupid CD that I'm finding it harder and harder to believe in. "And so the Christians and the Pagans sat there in their foxholes, sniping at each other and acting just like *ssh*l*s. Well, they both hate the Muslims, and they're not too sure about the Jews, but one thing they agree on, the other guy's got to lose..."

Break that stupid CD, and get right down to the eggnog.

In fact, f*ck the eggnog, too. Pass the rum.

Oops, can't do that either. I'm incubating my last little casualty... I mean my last kid. Got to be careful. After all, I want it to be developmentally normal when one f*ck*r or another beats it to death for growing up-- whatever growing up s/he gets to do-- with heretical beliefs.

Happy Holocaust, and a Merry F*ckAll.

Could someone tell me the name of this documentary and if it is available online?
I would love to see it, but sadly cannot get access to that channel here in this part of the world.

I watched (and taped) this program. It was very nicely and respectfully done.

I liked that they added the Pentacle fight with the VA and the postive portrayals on TV (i.e. Charmed) .

I'm sure it will be replayed on the Bio Channel and even the History Channel. I suggest everyone try to watch it.

Yeah, good luck with that. Most people couldn't care about a TV show unless it has actors masquerading as "average Joe" contestants you could vote off said show.
