Ways Of Worship

Author: Duxbury Editorial Source: Wicked Local (MA)

Title: WAYS OF WORSHIP
“Kendra’s doing what?”
That response, or something like that, was probably shared by a lot of people upon hearing the news that the Rev. Kendra Vaughan Hovey was leaving the First Church of Wicca in Duxbury in order to start a Christian ministry, Living Waters Community of Hope.
After all, not only is a change from Wicca to Christianity a pretty severe one, but Hovey was more than just a member of the church, she was its high priestess.

A High Priestess is in the service of the Lord and Lady. It is a vocation, something that is not a part of your life because it *IS* your life. Her service to the Lord and Lady was a fantasy and so it has now ended. Her " service" to her new Lord and Master is likely to be just as much a fantasy as her previous service. She obviously did not get the words " Know Yourself " that were written above the door at Delphi.

a bit of overweening braggadocio to me, and completely overdone, and I am not too fond of using the term "Church" to describe Pagan gatherings and places either. May she be happy in her new existence, although I consider it a step backwards, so she needn't boast about it. Let's move on already.

Sorry, but any Pagan group calling themselves a "Church" is plain ol' silly, IMO. I feel it's high time that Pagans start using some other term for their group, as we use the term "Handfasting" rather than "Wedding". How about: Temple, Sanctuary, Coven, Kindred....or the host of other terms that pretty much mean similar to a "Church". Just a thought.

Why is a story that is over 4 months old suddenly popping up now? I read about this in January...

... “another one bites the dust”. As has been said, the word “playgan” definitely applies in this case.
As per what I have learned about Christianity, I would never follow its fallacious fabrications, dogmatic drivel or its alleged deity, as it is demonstrably false:
LYING FOR BIBLEGOD, A CENTURIES-LONG TRADITION: ( [Web LINK] )
BIBLICAL NONSENSE: ( [Web LINK] )
CHRISTIAN AGGRESSION ( [Web LINK] )
Yes, let’s spread the “only true” “divinely inspired” “word”….
A key phrase from the cited article: “………Hovey’s former followers………”
You are either a God, (“Those that Make things happen”) … a shepherd, (“those that watch things happen”) … or a sheep (“those that wonder what happened”) .
There is of course, only one of the above that is worth Attaining to, and that Walk must be trod alone. But, there’s comfort in the herd. There’s security in the herd. Isn’t there?
Hovey will have a new set of sheeple in the very near future, I’m sure…..

...good riddence. She's doing Wicca a big favor. Not only does Ms. Hovey's displayed lack of knowledge regarding the most basic tenets of the Wiccan faith make her a poor excuse for an HPS who should not be entrusted with anyone's spiritual education, she chose not to exhibit the kind of grace upon her departure that I would expect from a member of our clergy. If Wicca is no longer a fulfilling path for her that's fine, but she could have left gracefully and respectfully; instead she choose to play the "my new religion is better than my old religion so I'm going to bad-mouth my old religion" game. I might add that, perhaps, if she had a better understanding of the religion she may have found it more fufilling. My condolences go out to the people who looked to her as a spiritual leader, and can only imagine the feelings of betrayal some of them may be experiencing.

is this going to be reported? I mean, yes, it's interesting to our community, but not that much. One article is enough. Bless her on whatever path she takes and let the rest of us move on already.

To reinforce what I said in the other article, her remarks very closely resemble someone who had just left "playganism." I expect this flaky idiot to go on a book tour with Nikki Russo soon.

While it is always sad to see a brother or sister in the craft leave her reasons are her own what I find upsetting about the article is the snide ha ha christianinty wins again attitude i get from it while i am by no means anti-christian the author feels to me to enjoy the news a little to much and has no understanding of pagan culture while her coven/chruch may miss her and even dissolve it by no means indicates that their faith is shaken or any less for her leaving

about all of this isn't that Vaughn has found a new path, it's the fact that she somehow passed herself as a Wiccan leader for so many years.
This is someone who purported to be a "high priestess" of 20 years, and yet also claims to have never cast a spell! What were they doing all those years at their Esbats? I know everyone in Wicca (and other paths) has their own level of involvement in spellwork, but this is one of the really basic teaching duties of a priestess or any such elder. That's like a Catholic finding out that their career pastor or bishop never actually prayed or gave sacraments to anyone!
Some of her other remarks about her reasons for conversion indicate that she has almost no understanding of the Rede- again, really basic core stuff. If there's any consolation for her fomer coven, it's the fact that her shoes will be quite easily filled. It should also serve to remind all of us not to grow reliant on "clergy." In Wicca, and I daresay in many other pagan traditions, we are each our own priest and priestess.
