you are driving along Whitcomb Avenue, you might literally pass a piece of history.
It is a small, attractive chamber, made of carefully placed stones, including a long, dolmen-like slab vaguely reminiscent of Stonehenge.
Grass, wild flowers and brilliant green moss grow in patches around the entrance. Mailboxes perch beside it, and cars zip past it.
Dan Boudillion is one of the few motorists who stop.
It’s a so-called “root cellar,” although its true origin and purpose are far from clear, and it’s not alone; they are found elsewhere in town, and throughout New England.
