Witch Gets A Fashion Makeover

Author: Amanda McGregor, The Salem News Source: California Chronicle

Title: 'WHAT NOT TO WEAR' COMES TO SALEM TO FILM STYLE INTERVENTION
A screaming mob in Colonial costumes charged through Derby Square yesterday chasing after the hosts of the popular television show "What Not to Wear."
TV fashion gurus Stacy London and Clinton Kelly were in Salem filming an episode of their show, in which they stage weekly style interventions on a victim of bad fashion.
Leanne Marrama, a member of Salem's witch community, was in their sights yesterday. Dressed in a black gown with wide lacy sleeves, a black corset, black combat boots and a black purse with a skull, Marrama is set for a complete fashion, hair and makeup makeover.
During yesterday's filming, Marrama's look was "put on trial" -- reminiscent of Salem's infamous 1692 witch trials -- by a jury that included other members of the city's psychic community.

How is it defined? And more importantly, who defines it? and why? Granted it is nice to find things that fit and looks nice, but a Cinderella wannabe I am not. I am my own person, at least. If I wanted a uniform, I would have chosen one, and not everyone gets the 5000 dollars to spend willy nilly and do have to settle for what they can find. I have watched the show, and in some folk, I have seen a definite improvement, but I can't help feeling the bullying is a bit over the top from time to time.

Yes, there is a significant grammatical difference between the two. One referred to the body shape and thinness of the people, the other to an extremity.
Also, for those who wish to look at it as "just a tv show": remember that when Dateline covers yet another murder case where it links some sicko to witchcraft.

with Stacy & Clinton. Their own clothing choices sometimes make me wonder how THEY are qualified to tell anyone else what to wear. And the throwing away (actually I think they donate) of the person's entire wardrobe I don't agree with. So what, they've got sweats and baggy stuff... we all need "bum-around" clothes.
However, they don't always get "ruler-thin" people and don't make fun of overweight guests. They merely point out that wearing clothing that fits properly (not too baggy, not too tight) , makes a person look fabulous.
I think it's really nice when people get that $5000 to shop in NYC. I would love to have the opportunity to be set loose there with that much money to spend all at once.

I am a huge fan of Clinton and Stacy. I am super excited that they are making over someone from the Witch community. They never belittle their subjects so this will bring positive attention to the pagan community on a national level. I think any positive exposure on this level is a great thing.

...I certainly wouldn't let anyone go through my closet and get rid of what they didn't like. I'd lose too much of my favorite clothing. I'm not a fashion victim; I deliberately murder it.

I honestly think that you should lighten up a little. Yes I'm still learning about the Path, but it was all done in good fun. The community was involved, so they were okay with it. I think it's shameful that you truly believe that the show is stereotypical. I've seen it on many occasions, and its mostly filled with people that are not skinny or a stick figure. Maybe you don't know what the show is about, maybe you haven't seen it. I also think it's a shame that you would JUDGE something like this. It's a TV show, relax. It's not gonna end the world. Shouldn't we congratulate the person for getting a $5,000 shopping spree for free? Congrats to the Salem woman I say!

I never really liked the show in the first place. It represents everything I feel is wrong with this country: it ostracizes and estranges anyone who isn't "normal"; it usually caters to the thin, ruler body type; their recommended clothing is outrageously priced; and it plays off of stereotypes (the "since he's gay and she's the gay friend, they know all about fashion" sterotypes) . Oh, forgot to add it trivializes everything for the sake of entertainment.
I really don't see how this was newsworthy for our community, either. Just because a TV show goes to Salem and picks yet another person for the stereotype we're supposed to give it attention? I know I won't any further than this.

Oh yes, let's all poke fun at the shameful moment in American history that killed 20 people and ruined the lives of more. Har har. Sorry Stacy and Clinton, don't think I'll be tuning in.
